• WA031-040 Historic town
  Description

  Situated on a low promontory on the W bank of the Colligan estuary, where the river narrows before entering Dungarvan Harbour. Dungarvan existed by 1175 when it became a Royal town, although it is possibly of Viking origin since there are references to Ostmen as late as 1250 (Curtis 1929-31, 14). The construction of the castle (WA031-040001-) had begun by 1215 and the Fitzgeralds (Earls of Desmond) were granted custody of it from 1260, although title to the town was disputed in the 14th century when the town went into decline. In 1463 a new grant of the town was made to the Earl of Desmond, with a daily market, the customs from which were spent on the town walls which were repaired or possibly built at this time (Berry 1914, 55-9). In the 16th century title to the town was again disputed between the Earl of Desmond and Piers Butler, Earl of Ossory, and in 1535 James Butler, with the Lord Deputy, besieged and captured Dungarvan. It was ruled directly by the Crown from 1543 onwards. Dungarvan received a Charter of Incorporation from James I in 1611 which established it as a parliamentary borough and in 1618 it was bought by Sir Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork. The town was captured by the Confederates in 1642 and regained later that year by William St Leger. Dungarvan was recaptured and held by the Confederates again in 1645, until it was besieged and captured by Cromwell's forces in 1649. (Bradley et al. 1989, vol. 1, 7-51) The town defences are centred on the 13th-century castle and formed a square (dims. c. 250m N-S; c. 230m E-W) extending S from the castle along the seafront to Jacknell St., W to St Augustine St., N to the seafront and E to the castle (Fraher 1995). Excavations at six points along the defences (WA031-040010-) confirm the line of the walls, and provide evidence of a fosse. The walls appear to be late 16th century or 17th century in date, and do not survive above ground level. There are two medieval houses, (WA031-040002-) on Castle St. and (WA031-040003-) on Church St., and the late 17th-century tholsel (WA031-040009-) is built on the site of the medieval market-house. The remains of St Mary's parish church (WA031-040004-) are outside the town wall at S, and a plaque (WA031-040013-) is incorporated in the wall of a house on Church St. Archaeological excavations within the town have recorded traces of medieval houses and other activity, but much of the stratigraphy in the enclosed area was robbed for clay. Archaeological remains in the suburb of Abbeyside, to the E across the Colligan estuary (Wth c. 90-250m), consist of the Augustinian abbey (WA031-040005-) and the site of a tower house (WA031-040006-). • WA031-040001 Castle - Anglo-Norman masonry castle
  Description

  The royal castle of Dungarvan was in existence by 1215, but building work was renewed in the 1260s and 1270s. It was granted to the Fitzgeralds in 1285 and they retained possession until 1535 when the castle was taken over by the Earl of Ossory. It changed hands four times during the Confederate Wars before Cromwell captured it in 1649. The castle continued in use as a garrison throughout the 17th century, and the barracks were built within it before 1746. It was used as a Garda station until 1987 (Bradley et al. 1989, vol. 1, 24). The remains are in good condition and include a shell-keep at the NW angle of a subrectangular ward with a curtain wall surviving complete at S and W. The curtain wall (H c. 5.5m) has gun loops and blocked arrow loops at wall-walk level. A gatehouse at the SE angle has two D-shaped towers linked by a vaulted passage with a portcullis groove and a murder-hole. A polygonal shell-keep at the NW angle partly survives to the first floor. The entrance was at the first floor, on the E side, and the ground level inside the keep was naturally high, except at the N side where a large building with a plank-centered vaulted chamber (dims. 17.4m x 5.2m) was built at ground-floor level. The loops in this chamber were later adapted for artillery. The keep has an original garderobe passage in the NW wall and a window embrasure at SW. An inserted mural passage through the wall at SW leads to the wall-walk of the W curtain wall. Excavation by D. Pollock (1996a) revealed that the shell-keep was originally surrounded by a moat. At the SW angle of the court is a large circular tower (ext. diam. 10.7m; H c. 11m) of three floors with an inserted vault over the ground floor. The entrance was at ground level leading to a chamber with three embrasures, and spiral stairs gave access to the upper floors. The wicker-centered vault partly obscures three arrow-loop embrasures at first-floor level. Access to the wall-walk of the S curtain wall is from the stairs at first-floor level, and the W wall-walk is accessible from the second floor of the tower through secondary use of one of its three embrasures. There is a garderobe at the second floor. Excavation in 1997 (Pollock 1998, 183-4) revealed a building at the S side of the keep and a cistern in the hall, while excavation inside the NE angle of the court revealed the base of a rectangular corner tower which was superceded in the 15th/16th century by another tower which no longer survives.   Description

  There is a two storey house (int. dims. 12.6m x 8.9m) known as Garvan's Church on Castle St., possibly 15th or 16th century in date. The façade has a pointed doorway and slit window, now blocked, and there are the remains of a slit window in the E gable at first-floor level.   Description

  At the corner of Quay St. and Church St. is a building incorporating medieval features including the jambstones of a doorway and three ogee-headed windows in the S wall. • WA031-040004 Church
  Description

  Located at the top of a S-facing slope and just outside the walled area of Dungarvan (WA031-040----). St Mary's parish church is within a rectangular graveyard (dims. c. 100m N-S; c. 80m E-W), with references from the early 13th century (Cal. doc. Ire., vol. 1, 184). It was burned down by the Confederate Catholics in 1642 and according to local tradition a steeple was demolished by Cromwell. It continued in use until the 1820s when it was replaced by the present C of I church. Only a fragment of what may be the original W gable survives (L 10.2m; H c. 5m) with five, small circular windows arranged in two rows. • WA031-040005 Religious house - Augustinian friars
  Description

  Situated on the E side of the Colligan estuary c. 400m from Dungarvan castle (WA031-040001-). An Augustinian abbey was founded c. 1290 by Thomas Fitzmaurice Fitzgerald. By the Suppression in 1541 it served as a parish church and it was in ruins by 1654. The remains consist of the chancel and crossing-tower within a subrectangular graveyard (dims. c. 50-80m E-W; c. 60m NE-SW) defined by a masonry wall, with the sea on the E side. The tower is incorporated into the modern St Augustine's RC church which is built on the site of the N transept. The chancel (int. dims. 13.5m E-W; 6.25m N-S) survives complete with a large window in the E gable and three pointed windows in the S wall, all of which are destroyed. There are numerous putlog holes in the walls. A small rectangular window survives above the E window, with a round-arched doorway in the N wall and traces of a triple sedilia in the S wall. The graveslab of Donald McGrath is set in the ground in this doorway. The four-storey tower at the transept is complete (H c. 16m) with an external string course over the second floor. There is a groin vault over the ground floor and the remains of newel stairs are visible at the NW angle of the first floor. Three lights survive at second-floor level and the third level, or belfry stage, has tall single-light, ogee-headed opes in the N and E walls, with similar double opes in the S and W walls. Some architectural fragments (WA031-040008-) in the graveyard indicated that it had a cloister arcade. The 15th century graveslab of Donald McGrath (WA031-040029-) is set in the ground in the chancel doorway, while an armorial plaque (WA031-040030-) and stone head (WA031-040031-) are set in the outer face of the W wall of the modern church. • WA031-040006 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Adjacent to the site of an Augustinian abbey (WA031-040005-) and known as 'McGrath's Castle' with references dating from 1618. It was described by J. O'Donovan c. 1840 (O'Flanagan 1929, 45) as a square building (dims. c. 11.5m E-W; c. 9.5m N-S) of six storeys. Photographs from c. 1900 in the Lawrence collection (NLI, 3597 W.L.) and local collections confirm this and show two vaults with portions of the bawn wall surviving at the roadside.   Terraced two-bay three-storey house with dormer attic, c.1815, retaining early fenestration. Renovated, c.1965, with dormer attic added. Renovated, c.1990, with replacement shopfront inserted to ground floor. Pitched (shared) roof with replacement artificial slate, c.1965, clay ridge tiles, rendered (shared) chimney stack, flat felt roofs, c.1965, to dormer attic windows, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Painted rendered walls with rendered quoins to ends. Square-headed window openings with stone sills. 1/1 timber sash windows with timber casement windows to dormer attic. Replacement timber shopfront, c.1990, to ground floor with fluted engaged columns, fixed-pane (two-light) timber display window with segmental-headed panes, timber panelled and glazed timber doors with overlights, and fascia over having stepped cornice. Road fronted with concrete brick cobbled footpath to front.
