- WM024-050 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a small outcrop, in undulating pasture with extensive views to NW, N and E although restricted to S and SW. Monument described in 1980 as a D-shaped area (dims. 33m NNW-SSW; 24m ESE-WNW) enclosed by an earth and stone bank best preserved where it is highest from NNE-E and poorly preserved where it is low and slight from E-S-W-N-NNE and almost reduced to a scarp. It contains a good deal of stone with some evidence of an external stone facing at SSE. A gap (Wth 2.5m) at SE may represent the original entrance. The interior is uneven and rises gradually from the perimeter to the centre. There is rock outcrop within, although no other features are evident. The interior rises gradually from the perimeter to the centre and is uneven due to outcropping rock. A modern field bank running WNW-ESE flanks the straight side of this D-shaped monument. A second field bank runs along the perimeter from WNW-N. These field banks and others to SE, S and SW have recently been defaced and are partially levelled. A hole has been excavated just outside the perimeter at NW, N and SE, where it is possible that large boulders have been removed. According to a previous field report of 1971, there was a slight fosse visible all around and an outer bank present from NNW-N-NE, however these may have been infilled and levelled respectively in the interim period between the two site visits. - WM024-051 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a rise, on top of a ridge, in pasture, with extensive views in all directions. Monument described in 1971 and 1980 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 54m) enclosed by a bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The substantial earth and stone inner bank has several small gaps and is almost reduced to a scarp in places. The fosse is wide and flat-bottomed from NE-E-S-SSW and contains field clearance stones from N-NE and from SSW-W-N. The outer bank is visible from N-NE and is incorporated into the townland boundary from NE-E-S-SSW where it is a drystone wall. There are possible remains of internal stone facing at NE. Although there are a number of disturbance gaps in the bank at N, E and S, the original entrance is not recognisable. The interior is level and a field wall running roughly NE-SW extends across the E quadrant. Monument is visible today as a tree-covered earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. - WM024-094 Enclosure - large enclosure
Description
Situated on a prominent rise, in pasture, with good views in all directions. Monument described in 1971 and 1976 as a D-shaped area (dims. 70m NW-SE; 70m NE-SW) with straight side (L 73m) at NW enclosed by a low earth and stone bank, a wide and deep intervening fosse and an outer bank that is best preserved from SE-S with external stone facing visible. It is incorporated into a field boundary from S-W-N-SE. The original entrance is not visible. The interior rises gently from the perimeter towards the centre and is uneven with some rock outcrop visible. A rectangular house site (WM024-094001-) is visible in the NE quadrant. The remains of a circular-shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 22m) defined by a low earth and stone bank is visible in the centre of the monument. This enclosure may represent the remains of a ringfort that was later enclosed by a larger D-shaped earthwork. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. Description
Situated on a prominent rise, in pasture, with good views in all directions. In NE quadrant of ringfort (WM024-094----) are the remains of a small rectangular-shaped house site (dims. 5m NNW-SSE; 3.6m ENE-WSW) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 1.3m; H 0.7m) is WITH entrance (Wth 1.3m) at SSE. Description
Situated on a small hillock, in undulating pasture, with good views in all directions except N-NE where overlooked by higher ground. Ringfort (WM024-097----) lies c. 127m to SE. Monument described as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 37m) enclosed by a low earth and stone bank that has been modified and incorporated into a field boundary. The original entrance is not clearly visible. The interior rises towards the centre and has numerous rock outcrops. Description
Situated on a gentle SSW-facing slope, in pasture, with good views to SE. Annotated ‘Fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a circular-shaped enclosure outlined by two concentric lines. Depicted on the revised 1876 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork enclosed by a bank with a field fence intersecting the bank at SSE. No surface remains visible. Description
Situated on SW facing slope of rinsing ground, in pasture, with good views to SE, S and W but restricted to N. Ringforts (WM024-095---- / WM024-132----) lie c. 127m to NW and c. 132m to SE, respectively. Monument described as a roughly oval-shaped area (dims. 38.5m E-W; 31.4m N-S) enclosed by an earth and stone bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank with entrance gap (Wth at top 4.2m; basal Wth 2m) at SE. The bank has been incorporated into a field boundary from NW-N-NE. There is a shallow fosse visible from E-SE and S-SW and a low outer bank visible from S-SW. The interior has a gentle SW-facing slope with three house sites (WM024-097001-/002-/003-) visible. There is a modern gateway at WNW. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. Description
Situated on the SW facing slope of rising ground, in pasture, with good views to SE, S and W but restricted to N. In E quadrant of ringfort (WM024-097----) are the remains of a subrectangular-shaped house site consisting of a sunken are (dims. 4m NNE-SSW; 3.7m WNW-ESE) defined by a low earth and stone bank (Wth 1m; H 0.4m) with entrance gap at S. Description
Situated on the SW facing slope of rising ground, in pasture, with good views to SE, S and W but restricted to N. In SW quadrant of ringfort (WM024-097----) are the remains of a subrectangular-shaped house site (dims. 4.3m NNE-SSW; 2.8m WNW-ESE) defined by a low earth and stone bank (Wth 1.2m; H 1m) with entrance gap (Wth at top 1m; basal Wth 0.8m) at ESE.
