• WM024-155 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on gently sloping ground, overlooking low-lying, rough pasture to S and SW. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a rectangular structure annotated ‘Castle’ and which appears to adjoin a circular-shaped ringwork (WM024-155001-) to SW. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a rectangular ruin on the edge of the inner scarp of an oval-shaped ringwork and annotated ‘Castle (in Ruins)’. Area around castle annotated ‘Sam’s Park’ on OS 25-inch map. Monument described in 1979 as all that remains of the castle are the grass-covered wall footings visible standing inside a ringwork. Wall footings of the castle are visible on the SW bank of the ringwork. There is a low mound against the internal face of the ringwork bank at WSW where a portion of the castle wall footing (approx. H 2m; L 2m) is well preserved. Another low mound with the remains of wall footings are located in the NE area of the ringwork and are assumed to be the ruins of a small building. • WM024-155001 Castle - ringwork
  Description

  Situated on gently sloping ground, overlooking low-lying, rough pasture to S and SW. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork associated with a castle (WM024-155----). This enclosing earthwork or ringwork could be the grass-covered wall footings of a collapsed bawn wall or could be the remains of an earlier enclosure which was refortified when a stone castle was constructed along the W side of the earthwork. Monument described in 1979 as a circular-shaped area enclosed by a substantial bank of earth and stone. The remains of sod-covered wall footings associated with a stone castle are visible inside the enclosure. Rock outcrop is also visible within the interior. No clear entrance feature visible. The enclosure is surrounded by a complex of earthworks (WM024-155002-). To the S these banks form two trapezoidal-shaped enclosures. It is not clear whether these enclosures are contemporaneous with the ‘Castle’ site or later feature. To the WSW of the ringwork is a small rectangular-shaped house site. The ground between the house site & ringwork is uneven, with rocky outcrops & depressions. A complex of earthworks (WM024-155002-) are visible in the immediate vicinity. • WM024-155002 Field system
  Description

  Situated on gently sloping ground, overlooking low-lying, rough pasture to S and SW. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a series of field banks and enclosures. Area around castle annotated ‘Sam’s Park’. In the immediate vicinity of a stone castle (WM024-155----) and ringwork (WM024-155001-) are a complex of earthen banks. The banks to S form two trapezoidal-shaped enclosures. It is unclear if these are contemporary with the castle site or later post-1700 field system.   Description

  Situated on gently sloping ground, overlooking low-lying, rough pasture to S and SW. To the WSW of castle (WM024-155----) and ringwork (WM024-155001-) is a small, rectangular house site. The ground between the house site and the ringwork is very uneven, with rocky outcrops and depressions. • WM024-156 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a very slight rise, in gently undulating pasture. Monument described in 1971 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 35m) enclosed by a bank and external fosse with a gap (Wth at top 3.7m; basal Wth 1.1m) at SSE which probably represents the entrance. A second gap at NE appears to be relatively modern. The earth and stone bank is steep on the exterior, although is almost reduced to a scarp and has several slight disturbance gaps. There is a modern stone wall extending along the exterior of the scarp and covering the outer lip of the fosse from W-NNW. A modern earth and stone field fence is built against the foot of the scarp from S-W. The interior is divided into two almost equal parts by a modern stone wall running ENE-WSW. There is a complex of mounds and banks of earth and stone in the N quadrant which do not form any recognisable plan. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. • WM024-157 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a rise of rock outcrop, in gently undulating rough pasture, with wide views in all directions, except to E. Monument described in 1971 as an oval-shaped area enclosed by a bank and external fosse with a gap (Wth at top 4.3m; basal Wth 1.6m) at E which probably represents the entrance. The bank is high and steep on the exterior, although is almost reduced to a scarp. The bank and scarp have several slight modern disturbance depressions. Large stones have been set against the base of the scarp in relatively modern times from NNE-ENE and at ESE. The slight fosse is best preserved from SW-W and is almost completely filled up from W-N-E-S-SW. The interior rises slightly from the perimeter towards the centre and is strewn with loose stone. An intermittent line of large stones is visible running NE-SW across the centre and is of unknown significance. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien.   Description

  Situated on a rise, in pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape. Depicted on the 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1973 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 24m) enclosed by a low earth and stone bank with possible entrance at SE. Some boulders lie on the bank at E. The interior rises gently from the perimeter towards the centre and has a smooth surface.   Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape. Depicted on the 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1973 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 23m) enclosed by a low earth and stone bank, a shallow intervening fosse and slight traces of an outer bank. Some boulders lie on the bank at E. Some boulders lie near the bank on the Southern side. The interior is relatively level and is scattered with stones and small boulders which do not form any coherent pattern.
