• WM031-024 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on E-facing slope, in pasture. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1977 as an irregular subcircular-shaped area (diam. 33m) enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and a possible outer bank. The inner earth and stone bank is low and is best preserved from SW-W-WNW. There is a gap at E and NW and the bank is slightly defaced at other points by livestock paths. There are the remains of a narrow, shallow intervening fosse from SSW-SW-WSW. There is a slight rise in the ground outside the fosse which looks like a low outer bank is present from ENE-E-SE-SSE, however this may be due to natural outcrop and the addition of dumping field clearance around the exterior of the monument. A modern field fence runs roughly NW-SE outside the monument at SW. The interior has an uneven E-facing slope and a shallow linear depression of unknown significance is visible running roughly NW to SE across the E quadrant.   Description

  Situated on the edge of a high ridge, in pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape. Ringfort (WM031-030----) lies c. 165m to NNW and ringfort (WM031-032----) lies c. 140m to ENE. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1973 as a roughly circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 26m) enclosed by a bank of earth and stone. The bank has been disturbed from SSE-S-SSW. There is no trace of a fosse. The interior rises from the perimeter toward the centre and is strewn with loose stone. Monument described in 1973 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 27m) enclosed by a low bank from SSW-W-NW, reduced to a scarp from NW-E-SSE. The bank has been disturbed from SSE-S-SSW. There is no trace of an external fosse. The interior is relatively level with a depression near the centre and is strewn with loose stone.   Description

  Situated on gently rising ground, in pasture. Ringfort (WM031-034----) lies c. 95m to NE. Annotated 'Fort' on the OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a circular-shaped earthwork cut by a trackway across the SW sector. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as an irregular semicircular-shaped field boundary. Monument described in 1973 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 27m) enclosed by a low bank with traces of an external fosse. A trackway cuts across the SW sector of the monument, where the perimeter has been levelled. The interior is relatively level and featureless, apart from a boulder in the W quadrant. OS 25-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork bisected by a field boundary running NE-SW. Levelled monument described in 1973 as a faint outline of a roughly semicircular-shaped area (diam. 35m) defined by the vague remains of a levelled bank from SW-W-N-NE. There are no surface remains visible of the other half of the monument on the SE side of the field boundary. Levelled monument is not visible today on Digital Globe aerial photography.   Description

  Situated on an esker ridge, in undulating pasture and scrub, with a good view of the surrounding landscape. Athlone to Mullingar railway line runs 215m to SE. Annotated 'Fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a circular-shaped earthwork (approx. diam. 44m). Shown on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork (approx. diam. 55m NE-SW; 43m NW-SE). Monument described in 1954 as having been partially quarried away with a slight fosse defining approximately half of the perimeter. Levelled ringfort described in 1973 as no surface remains visible. The surface of the ridge is uneven and there are some stony patches exposed which may be evidence of relatively recent disturbance. It is not possible to trace the line of a bank or a fosse.   Description

  Situated on a rise, in pasture. Annotated 'Fort' on the 1837 ed. OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a subcircular-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 37m NE-SW; 40m NW-SE). Levelled monument described in 1973 as no surface remains visible. According to local information, this was a small circular-shaped area enclosed by a bank. Levelled monument is visible today as a very faint circular-shaped cropmark on OSi aerial photography. • WM031-062 Windmill
  Description

  Situated on a low eminence (349ft/106m OD), in pasture. Annotated ‘Windmill Stump’ on the 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map and depicted as a small, circular-shaped tower with a rectangular-shaped building abutting to SW. The windmill is in the centre of a roughly circular-shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 41m) which is open to S with access route to the public road at S and where it encloses a limekiln which may have been the source of the stone used to construct the windmill tower. Post-1700 windmill described in 1980-2 as a roughly circular-shaped, ivy clad stump of a windmill (approx. diam. 6.4m; H 4m) with openings (Wth 1.25m; T 0.75-1m) at N and S. There is a considerable amount of rubble within but no trace of a mill wheel or the workings of any machinery. On the interior there is a ledge about 2.5m above the present ground level which probably supported the first floor. The windmill is situated in the centre of a circular-shaped enclosure which is defined by a low tree-lined scarp from SSW-W-N-E-SE, with a field wall at the base. According to local information, there is no known history of the windmill or last date of its use. Monument is visible today as a circular-shaped tower covered in vegetation in a densely overgrown tree-lined circular-shaped enclosure on Digital Globe aerial photography.
