• WM022-007 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on the N side of a low mound, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Kilfaughny Castle depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a narrow rectangular shaped building aligned NE-SW standing inside a series of small rectangular shaped fields. Described in 1983 as the poorly preserved remains consisting of a single section of upstanding wall (approx. L 11m; H 6-7m) that appears to be featureless, although the upper sections are obscured by a heavy growth of ivy. There is a large block of collapsed masonry and a silage pit to E. A roughly rectangular-shaped enclosure occupies the top of the mound, to the immediate S of the upstanding castle wall. A stream flows E-W approx. 10m to N of the castle. This has recently been drained, and the excavated fill built up to form a low bank on the S side of the stream.   Description

  Situated on a low rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. A roughly rectangular-shaped enclosure to the immediate SW of Kilfaughny Castle (WM022-007----) which is defined by a scarp (approx. L 15m) running N-S along the W side. Annotated ‘Fortified Wall’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map where Kilfaughny Castle is shown as a rectangular-shaped ruin standing inside a rectangular shaped earthwork with ‘fortified wall’ to SW side and a larger rectangular-shaped earthwork to S. • WM022-008 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low rise, on a NNW-facing slope, in pasture with good views to W, N, NE and W. Monument described in 1971 as a small subcircular-shaped area (dims. 29m N-S; 28m E-W) enclosed by a steep bank and external fosse. The bank is well preserved from ENE-E-S-W and is almost reduced to a scarp from W-NW-N. The slight remains of an external fosse are visible from ESE-S-W and is best preserved from S-W. The original entrance is not recognisable. The interior has a gentle SSE-facing slope. There is a deep field drain outside the bank to E.   Description

  Situated on top of a rise marked on an OS trig. station (97m/318ft OD), in pasture, with good views in all directions. Depicted as an earthwork on Larkin’s 1808 Map of County Westmeath (). Not depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map or the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map. Levelled monument described in 1976 as no surface remains visible. Monument is visible as an oval-shaped cropmark with a possible intervening fosse and outer bank on Digital Globe aerial photography.
