• WM022-023 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight WSW-facing slope, in pasture with good views to SW and NW. Bivallate ringfort described in 1971 and 1976 as a circular-shaped area (diam. 33m) enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The bank is substantial (ext. H 1-1.5m) and is well preserved, except where denuded either side of the causewayed entrance (Wth at top 6.8m; basal Wth 4.5m) at E. There is a wide, deep U-shaped fosse with a corresponding causeway (Wth at top 4m; overall Wth 6.4m; H 1.1m) at E. There is an outer bank visible from E-SE-SSE with a wide space (approx. Wth 6m) between it and the intervening fosse. A curvilinear field fence is visible from SSE-S-WSW and appears to have been created out of the outer bank. There is a disturbance depression inside the inner bank at NNW. The interior has a slight N-facing slope with cultivation ridges running N-S.   Description

  Detached four-bay single-storey thatched house, built c.1820, having single-storey extensions to either end (southwest and northeast). Pitched thatched roof with two rendered chimneystacks. Pitched corrugated roofs to extensions. Roughcast rendered walls over rubble field stone construction. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and replacement windows to main elevation (southeast). Two-over-two pane timber sliding sashes to rear (northwest) and six-over-three pane timber sliding sashes to northeast gable extension. Square-headed door opening with modern glazed timber door. Set perpendicular to road with rendered boundary wall to road frontage having wrought-iron gates. Detached single-storey rubble limestone outbuilding to the south having pitched corrugated-iron roof. Located to the north of Glassan.

  Description

  Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1885, comprising banded cylindrical shaft with fluted head having fluted spout, ‘cow tail’ curvilinear handle, and fluted ogee-dome cap with finial. Modern trough to front. Set back from road adjacent to road junction.

  Description

  Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, between 1901-10, with raised "ER VII" royal cipher. Makers name appears at base in raised lettering ' T. Allen & Co. London '. Set in rubble limestone gate pier adjacent to road junction and to the northwest of Glassan.

• Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception, church/chapel, 1820–1870 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached Roman Catholic chapel on cruciform plan, built c.1830 and altered c.1860, comprising three-bay nave to the north, two-bay transepts to the west and the east and a shallow chancel to the south. Gable-fronted entrance porches to the ends of south-facing elevations of transepts and to the north end of east side of nave (built c.1960). Freestanding three-stage belfry, on square-plan, having belfry on octagonal plan and slated roof over added to entrance front (south), c.1860. Single-storey extension to the north. Pitched natural slate roofs with raised cut stone verges and cut stone kneeler stones to gable ends, terracotta ridge comb tiles and cut stone Celtic crosses finials to roof apexes at gable ends. Ruled-and-line rendered walls to main body of church with clasping corner buttresses. Belfry constructed of rubble limestone with extensive cut limestone trim including clasping corner buttresses and dressings to the openings. Pointed-arched and lancet window openings with rendered hoodmouldings over, block-and-start rendered surrounds, cut stone sills and (mostly) having stained glass windows. Paired lancet openings to south faces of entrance porches to south faces of transepts. Pointed-arched openings to freestanding belfry having timber louvered vents. Pointed segmental-headed door openings to east and west sides of transept porches having rendered hoodmouldings over, block-and-start surrounds and timber sheeted doors. Pointed-arched opening with dressed limestone surround and a cut stone hoodmoulding over to the south face of freestanding belfry. Set back from road in own grounds to the east side of Toberclare/Tubberclare with graveyard to the north and to the east. Bounded on road frontage (south) by a low plinth wall with cut stone coping and cast-iron railings over. Main entrance gates to south, comprising a pair of dressed limestone gate piers (on square-plan) supporting cast-iron double gates.

  Description

  Detached six-bay single-storey house, built c.1800, having projecting single-bay windbreak entrance porch to the centre of the main faced (north). Pitched thatched roof with decorative ropework to ridge, raised rendered verges to either end (west and east) and two rendered chimneystacks. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth with smooth rendered bands to corners. Square-headed window openings with rendered reveals and surrounds, cut stone sills and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed doorcase to porch with replacement timber door. Rendered panels to porch, flanking door. Square-headed doorcase to the east end having timber sheeted door. Road fronted to the east of Toberclare/Tubberclare with collection of single-storey rubble limestone outbuildings to the rear having slate or corrugated metal roofs.

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1820, with projecting single-bay gable-fronted porch to the front façade (north). Now vacant. Pitched slate roof with raised rendered verges and rendered chimneystacks to either end. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth cement rendered walls over projecting plinth. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed doorcase to porch with replacement glazed timber door. Set slightly back from the road with a two-storey outbuilding attached to east side with corrugated metal lean-to roof, roughcast rendered walls, square-headed window and door openings and a single-storey outbuilding to the west. Rendered boundary wall with rendered gate piers and a mild steel gate to the north. Located to the east end of Toberclare/Tubberclare.
