  Description

  Situated on a low rise, in gently undulating pasture, on the S edge of an area of bogland, with good views in all directions. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped partially tree-planted enclosure (approx. dims. 53m E-W; 42m N-S). Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as an irregular-shaped of woodland. Levelled monument described in 1974 as no surface remains visible. The sides and top of the natural rise have been disturbed considerably by digging. The site appears to be natural and it bears no resemblance to an antiquity. Vague cropmark of levelled enclosure is barely visible today on Digital Globe aerial photography.   Description

  Situated in a circular-shaped coppice of deciduous trees, now replaced by a young coniferous plantation. Depicted as a circular shaped enclosure on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and depicted as a partially levelled earthwork on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map. Monument described in 1982 as a high roughly oval-shaped platform (approx. dims. 15m N-S; 11m E-W) defined by a scarp (approx. H 2m), the deciduous trees have been planted on the upper edge of it. There is no visible trace of an external fosse which would have been considerably disturbed by the forestry drainage channels which come right up to base of the platform on all sides. This may have been a ringfort that was reused as a tree-ring in the post-1700 period. Monument is not visible today on Digital Globe aerial photography as it is obscured by the coniferous plantation.   Description

  Three pieces of light brushwood (Wth 0.78m; D 0.15m). The pieces (diam. 0.02-0.03m) are irregularly positioned. The end of one piece has been cut to a chisel point. The wood is situated in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with some Eriophorum and ericaceous roots. A small, displaced fragment of desiccated leather (92E148:78) was recovered from the opposing drain face. This is one of a number of possibly related sites forming a line running in a NW-SE direction across the bog, including SMR WM039-054---- and SMR WM039-145---- located 14m to the E and SMR WM039-053---- 16m to the W.

  The site (L 2m; Wth 0.6m) is orientated N-S and consists of eleven stakes set in an approximately linear arrangement. The stakes are set at a variety of angles and are positioned at irregular intervals. Woodworking is evidenced by chisel points on a number of the stakes.   Description

  A deposit of brushwood and roundwoods in the base of a possible erosion gully (Wth 2.95m; D 1.04m). The gully is approximately V-shaped and five irregularly laid and unevenly spaced roundwoods (Wth 0.81m; D 0.52m) are located at its base. The roundwoods (diam. 0.065-0.1m) are in a poor condition. At the NE end of the gully, is a compact deposit (Wth 0.53m; D 0.13m) of ten pieces of unevenly spaced light brushwood with occasional twigs, laid 1-2 pieces deep. One piece of brushwood has evidence for branch-trimming performed with a metal tool. Wood species include willow, hazel, alder, birch and oak. The wooden deposits are situated in moderately to well-humified Sphagnum peat with Eriophorum. The gully cuts through well-humified Sphagnum peat with Eriophorum.   Description

  A sparse arrangement of mixed brushwood and a single roundwood in opposing drain faces (Wth 1.1m; D 0.46m). The majority of pieces lie in a N-S direction but do not form a coherent structure. The wood is most dense towards the NE (Wth 0.4m; D 0.419m) with three outlying pieces to the SW.   Description

  A dispersed collection of irregularly laid brushwood (diam. 0.01-0.04m), ten pieces deep, with two pegs and occasional twigs (Wth 5.39m; D 0.75m). There is a concentration of material in the SW portion of the site, (Wth 1.8m; D 0.6m). The remaining elements most likely constitute outliers from this but a number of pieces may be not be associated. The pegs are set at 75° and are located within the main concentration. One has been worked to a pencil point, the other to a wedge point. A number of brushwood pieces have been worked to pencil and chisel points. Wood species include hazel, willow, birch and oak. The site is situated in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with fibrous roots. SMR WM039-091---- is located 3m to the SW in the opposing drain face. Date of upload: 06 August 2013

The site is situated in poorly humified Sphagnum peat with fibrous and ericaceous roots.   Description

  The site (L 24.1m min.; Wth 1.66m; D 0.08m) is orientated NE-SW and has been severely damaged. It consists of widely spaced, transverse roundwoods (diam. 0.06-0.08m) and brushwood (diam. 0.03-0.055m) lying 0.03-2m apart which may be the substructural remains of a more substantial site. Toolmarks survive on one roundwood. Where not machine-damaged, the wood is hard and retains most of its bark. The site is set in poorly humified Sphagnum peat with some Eriophorum.   Description

  The site (L 3.2m min.; Wth 2m; D 0.09m) is orientated WNW-ESE and consists of brushwood and roundwoods laid predominantly in a transverse position with some longitudinal elements running above or below these pieces. The wood is sparsely distributed but the site may be been more substantial prior to milling. A number of pieces show evidence for woodworking and tearing. The wood is in good condition. The site sits in well-humified Sphagnum peat containing Eriophorum and fibrous roots with an area of poorly humified Sphagnum towards the centre of the site. Date of upload: 08 August 2013

The elements are irregularly arranged with no apparent structure and the wood is in poor condition. A number of degraded worked ends were noted. The site is located in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with some Eriophorum. This site is one of a number of similar structures in a 24m length of this drain face including SMR WM039-078----, 2m to the NE. This site is one of a number of similar structures in a 24m length of this drain face, including SMR WM039-072---- and SMR WM039-078---- immediately adjacent to this site to the NE and SW respectively.   A dense deposit of brushwood (diam. 0.01-0.055m) and twigs with a scatter of brushwood to the N (Wth 3.58m; D 0.52m). Most of the brushwood is parallel and the deposit slopes downward at an angle of 30-45°, with some elements set at right angles. A single peg lies in the densest part of the site. The wood is in good condition and metal-cut toolmarks are recorded. Wood species include hazel, willow, birch, alder, ash, Pomoideae and oak. The wood is set in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with Eriophorum and some ericaceous root. The site is one of a number of similar structures in a 24m length of this drain face, including SMR WM039-073---- and SMR WM039-071---- immediately adjacent to this site to the NE and SW respectively. The ends of two pieces of brushwood have been cut to chisel points. Wood species include hazel, birch and willow.   A dispersed deposit of four pieces of heavy brushwood in the drain face (Wth 0.7m; D 0.35m). All of the pieces slope downward into the drain. There is no apparent structure and the position of the pieces seems to have been caused by machine damage. The wood is in moderate condition and is set in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with some Eriophorum and ericaceous roots. Date of upload: 08 August 2013

  Description

  The site (Wth 1.13m; D 0.15m) is orientated N-S and composed of mixed brushwood and pegs. The centre of the site is densely packed with irregularly arranged light brushwood overlain by transverse, heavier brushwood. One side of the site is heavily damaged, the other is flanked by up to ten pegs set at 80-90°. Metal toolmarks are evident on a number of pieces cut to chisel and wedge points and a number of torn strips are recorded. Wood species include hazel and holly. The site is set in well-humified Sphagnum peat. SMR WM039-082---- is located in the opposite drain face 4.3m to the N of this site. Date of upload: 08 August 2013

The wood is in good condition and sits in well-humified Sphagnum peat with occasional Eriophorum. The site is located 3m to the NE of SMR WM039-083---- and 2.4m to the SW of SMR WM039-085----.   Description

  The site (Wth 1.6m; D 0.24m) consists of a dense band of mixed brushwood, twigs and a roundwood. The majority of pieces lie in a NW-SE direction, with a small number sitting perpendicular to these. The twigs occur occasionally throughout the site but form a bed towards the NE and are irregularly laid. Some outlying pieces of brushwood are noted on both sides of the site but may be natural in origin. There is evidence for woodworking and branch-trimming but the toolmarks are degraded. The site sits in well-humified Sphagnum peat containing occasional Eriophorum. The site is located 2.4m to the NE of SMR WM039-084----. Date of upload: 08 August 2013

  The site (L 1.09m; Wth 0.56m; D 0.08m) is orientated NNW-SSE and consists of the partial remains of a hurdle panel. The rods (diam. 0.01-0.02m), are 2-3 pieces deep and arranged in a single weave. A pair of sails (diam. 0.02-0.022m) are located at the S end of the site and the fragment of a single sail is evident towards the N end. The panel is overlain by a bed of twigs (L 0.31m; Wth; 0.15m; D 0.02m). Woodworking is noted on one of the sails. The site is in poor condition having been disturbed by machinery particularly towards the its N. The S end of the site, however, may have been damaged in antiquity. Wood species include hazel and alder. Radiocarbon dated to cal. AD 1310-1483 (UCD-0142). It sits in moderately humified Sphagnum peat containing Eriophorum, ericaceous remains and fibrous roots. At its N end, there is a patch of poorly humified Sphagnum peat. SMR WM039-023---- is located 2.3m to the E of the site. Date of upload: 08 August 2013

  Description

  A deposit (Wth 1.47m min.; D 0.37m min.) of light brushwood, roundwoods and twigs. The brushwood (diam. 0.06-0.18m) is 4-5 pieces deep and occurs in clusters. The elements lie principally in an ENE-WSW direction. A single upright piece at the top of the site but this and a plank towards the NE end of the site appear to be part of SMR WM039-095----. The pieces are short in length suggesting disturbance. The wood is in poor condition and sits in well-humified Sphagnum peat containing Eriophorum and ericaceous remains.   Description

  An irregular scatter of light brushwood, twigs and stakes on the field surface (Wth 1.06m min.; D 0.04m). The brushwood (diam. 0.01-0.02m) is denser on the E side of the site and the twigs and three stakes are scattered throughout. A number of pieces of brushwood have metal toolmarks. The wood is in poor condition and is set in well humified Sphagnum peat with some Eriophorum and possibly intrusive fibrous roots.   Description

  The site (Wth 0.55m; D 0.53m) is orientated NW-SE and composed of planks, light brushwood and a tree trunk. The majority of elements are longitudinally laid. The timbers are closely set with the brushwood loosely distributed around them. The trunk (diam. 0.26m max.) is of elm and a hazelnut was recovered from beneath it. Three planks are radially split and two are further trimmed to a lozenge-shaped section. Other woodworking is indicated by a number of chisel points and a wedge point and there is evidence for branch-trimming. Wood species include hazel, ash, alder and oak. The wood is in good condition and sits in well-humified Sphagnum peat containing plant rhizomes. The site is located 1.25m to the N of SMR WM039-089---- in the opposite drain face. Two parallel pieces of brushwood and a roundwood are located 0.45m to the SW and a further piece of brushwood is located 0.72m to the SW.   An irregular spread of brushwood on the field surface which is partially milled (L 1.07m min.; Wth 0.64m min.; D 0.09m min.). The site is composed of light brushwood which overlies some heavier brushwood, set 0.12-1.04m apart. The material on the E side dips slightly into the peat. There is no clear orientation of the elements. The site is set in moderately humified Sphagnum peat containing fibrous remains with Eriophorum on either side of the deposit.   Description

  A deposit of mixed brushwood and twigs (L 0.9m min.; Wth 1.12m min.; D 0.09m min.) on the field surface, 3-4 rods deep. The heavier pieces of brushwood (diam. 0.038-0.045m) are interspersed with the twigs. The larger elements continue beyond the limit of exposure in a NW-SE direction. Wedge points and evidence of branch-trimming were present on some pieces, all indicative of a metal tool. SMR WM039-116---- is located on the field surface 3.1m to the SE.   A deposit of brushwood on the field surface (L 1.59m min.; Wth 0.92m min.; D 0.15m min.). Chisel points are present on a number of elements and there is also evidence of branch-trimming. The site sits in well-humified Sphagnum peat with Eriophorum and ericaceous remains.   A large, linear arrangement of brushwood and twigs on the field surface (L 5m min.; Wth 1.2m; D 0.1m) with the elements orientated NE-SW. The brushwood (diam. 0.01-0.06m) consists of two branches with some of the side branches attached. Woodworking is evident on some of the heavier pieces. The wood is in good condition, with some recent machine damage and desiccation. The peat around this material appears to be disturbed, mostly redeposited and compressed with fibrous remains.   Description

  The site (Wth 3.6m; D 0.16m) is composed of irregularly laid brushwood and twigs and has an unclear orientation. The brushwood is 2-3 pieces deep and the twigs occur in small beds. A number of almost vertical pieces may indicate the presence of pegs within the site. The wood is densest towards the centre of the site over a width of 1.5m. To the NE of this concentration are a number of sparse, light brushwood uprights. Several metal-cut chisel points are present. Wood species include hazel, willow and alder. The site lies in moderately humified peat composed of Sphagnum, Eriophorum and fibrous roots. A hazelnut is also recorded from the central part of the site. Date of upload: 09 August 2013

  Description

  The site (Wth 2.35m; D 0.4m) consists of a compact arrangement of brushwood. All the pieces are orientated in a NE-SW direction but it is not possible to determine the orientation of the site. The brushwood (diam. 0.025-0.035m) is laid five pieces deep. The main concentration of wood has a depth of c. 0.1m but the overall depth of the site is exaggerated by the presence of two pieces slightly below the site. A similar outlying piece is recorded 0.2m from the SW edge of the site. One piece shows evidence for woodworking. • WM039-410 Road - class 3 togher
  Description

  This site is located in the industrial peatlands of Toar Bog. It was recorded in the 2013 Re-assessment Peatland Survey as a possible togher located on the field surface near the drain edge, and composed of closely packed roundwood and brushwood elements (Whitaker 2014). A single cutting was opened and excavated under licence 14E0283. A fragment of alder was chosen for AMS dating and returned a result of cal. AD 1291–1397 (UBA 26611). The site was situated in a fibrous, moderately humified Sphagnum peat with Eriophorum, Calluna and herbaceous root inclusions. The excavated cutting contained closely placed E-W orientated alder, ash, birch, hazel and willow roundwood and brushwood delineated by N-S orientated brushwood, contained within an area measuring 2.85m x 2.4m in size. The elements (L0.18-1.8m, Diam. 0.01-0.06m) were machine damaged and fractured along their lengths. Several of the elements had evidence of woodworking, in the form of chisel and wedge point ends with flat facets. Some N-S oriented brushwood were located to the west of the main structure, 0-0.15m below the surface, contained in an area measuring 2.4 x 1.1m. These were composed of regularly shaped rods (max.   Description

  This unexcavated sighting is located in the industrial peatlands of Toar Bog. was recorded in the 2013 Re-assessment Peatland Survey as a disperse arrangement of brushwood located on the field surface for a length of 10.4m. The elements were machine damaged and broken along their lengths. Sighting A consisted of a single brushwood peg visible on the field surface. The peg had a wedge point toolmarked end with three flat facets. Sighting B comprised of four fragmentary brushwood elements exposed on the field surface which were orientated N-S. The site was situated in poor to moderately humified Sphagnum peat with Menyanthes inclusions (Whitaker 2014).
