  Description

  Situated on a flat-topped hillock in grass-land with good views in all directions. Depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map as a large oval-shaped earthwork and annotated on the OS Fair Plan map as ‘the shoemaker’s fort’. No depicted on subsequent editions of the OS 6-inch maps. This monument has been levelled, and all that remains is a circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 43m N-S; 42m E-W) defined by a low scarp. • WM013-090 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the W face of a slight natural rise in undulating grassland. Remains consist of a raised sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 42m NW-SE; 47m NE-SW) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank and a wide, shallow external fosse. The bank has been reduced to a scarp from NE-SE. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running ENE-WSW across the interior. A field fence intersects the perimeter of the monument from WNW-NE.   Description

  Situated on a low round-topped hillock, in gently undulating pasture, in a former deer park of Killynan House. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 50m E-W; 38m N-S). Ringfort (WM020-002----) lies c. 40m to E, enclosure (WM020-144----) c. 150m to NW and hut site (WM020-146----) c. 175m to NW. Monument described in 1972 as a broad oval-shaped area (approx. diam. 28m N-S; 35m E-W) enclosed by a low steep sided earth and stone bank with no visible trace of an external fosse. The bank is reduced to a scarp from SSE-S-W-N and the original entrance is not visible. The interior rises from the perimeter to the centre. A hut site (WM020-001001-) is located on the upper edge of the scarp at NE and this feature is clearly visible on oblique aerial photograph taken on 20/07/1970 (CUCAP BDV085). An old field bank intersects the scarp at SSW and W. Monument is visible today as an oval-shaped earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography.   Description

  Situated on a low round-topped hillock, in gently undulating pasture, on a former deer park of Killynan House. On the inner edge of the scarp in NE quadrant of ringfort (WM020-001----) are the remains of a sub-rectangular shaped hut site defined by low grass-covered earth and stone bank with no clear entrance feature visible.   Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, overlooked by higher ground adjacent to SW and W, but with good views in other directions. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped earthwork in a deer park associated with Killynan House. Ringfort (WM020-001----) lies c. 40m to W, enclosure (WM020-144----) c. 230m to W and hut site (WM020-146----) c. 230m to WNW. Monument described in 1970 and 1979 as a large subcircular-shaped area (dims. 39m NNW-SSE; 35m WSW-ENE) enclosed by an earth and stone bank, intervening fosse and an outer bank (CUCAP BDV085). This inner bank is best preserved from S-W-N, is almost reduced to a scarp from N-E-SE and has been almost completely levelled at SE-E. The original entrance is not obvious but may be at SE. A very shallow fosse and a possible outer bank of earth and stone are present from SE-S-SSW. The outer bank is low and may represent a later field fence. The interior has a slight SE-facing slope with some stones protruding above the surface. Monument is visible today as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography.   Description

  Situated in pasture, c. 50m NE of a farmyard. Annotated 'Fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a D-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 40m NE-SW; 33m NW-SE) with the straight side formed by a field fence to S. On this map an old road or lane is showing running onto the W side of the earthwork which may have served as a haggard for the nearby farmhouse. Monument described in 1981 as a much damaged ringfort visible as a raised semi-circular shaped area (dims. 15m E-W; 11m N-S) which is cut by a field fence to S. The interior is enclosed by the remains of a much denuded bank with traces of an external fosse, which are best preserved at N. There are a number of boulders on the surface of the interior suggesting that there is rock outcrop below the ground surface. Monument is not visible on Digital Globe aerial photography.   Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture with good views in all directions. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a suboval-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1970 as a broad oval-shaped area (31m NE-SW; 26m NW-SE) enclosed by a steep bank and external fosse. The bank (ext. H 1.7m) is visible from E-S and at W, however it is much defaced at ENE, SSW, WSW and WNW by modern quarrying. There is a slight fosse visible from SE-S-W-N. The original entrance is not recognisable. The interior has a gentle E-facing slope. A house site (WM020-009001-) can be seen in the NW quadrant.   Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture with good views in all directions. Within the NW quadrant of ringfort (WM020-009----) is a long subrectangular-shaped house site (dims. 8.8m NE-SW; 5m NW-SE) enclosed by a low earthen bank (overall Wth 3.2m; Wth at top 0.5m; H 0.3m). • WM020-010 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low rise, in gently undulating pasture with good views in all directions. A pond lies c. 35m to W. Depicted on the 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a suboval-shaped bivallate earthwork. Monument described in 1970 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 35m) enclosed by an earthen bank, intervening fosse, berm and an outer bank. The inner bank is high and steep. The intervening fosse is wide and deep extending from S-W-N-E. A berm-like space is located between the outer edge of the fosse and an outer bank of earth and stone. The outer bank is visible from S-SSE and swings slightly away from the fosse, suggesting that it may be a later feature. There is a gap (Wth at top 7.6m; basal Wth 5.5m) in the bank and a broad causeway (overall Wth 11.7m; Wth at top 6m; H 1m) at SE. A large portion of the bank and part of the interior has been quarried away on the N side of the entrance. The interior has a gentle SE-facing slope. • WM020-144 Enclosure
  Description

  Further to a field inspection by the ASI in 1986 the following monument was identified as being of archaeological significance. It is located at the NW side of an area designated on the 1st edition OS 6-inch map as a deerpark, and bound by a stone wall, within the demesne associated with Killynan House and castle (WM020-003----). The monument is situated on a natural ridge and comprises a D-shaped enclosure (58m E-W; 24m N-S) with straight N side (L c. 68m), raised above the surrounding ground level and bound by a low bank. The enclosing bank is denuded along the S edge of the monument from SW to SE. A hut site (WM020-146----), defined by a low stony bank adjoins the enclosure midway along the N bank with the enclosure bank forming one edge of the hut site. There is a possible entrance to the hut site at N. This monument was included in the Register of Historic Monuments in 1987 being listed as Enclosure and Hut Site.   Description

  Situated atop hillock with good views in all directions. WM020-008---- located 235m to E, WM020-002---- located 235m to NW. Depicted as a small plantation of trees on 1st edition Ordnance Survey 6-inch map. Only the E half of the monument survives above ground. It is bisected by a post and wire fence running on a N-S axis. No enclosing element could be identified in the field to the W of the field fence. Present remains consists of a circular area (diam. 25m N-S) enclosed by a low bank (Wth 1.5m; ext. H 0.5m) mainly degraded to a scarp with fosse (Wth 2m; ext. D. 0.2m) and traces of an external bank all of which is best preserved from N through E to SE. No entrance feature visible. Small semi-circular curving rise of ground in centre of enclosure intersected on W side by field fence running N-S may represent the remains of a partially destroyed hut site. • Killynan House, farmyard complex, 1780–1820 · Regional interest
  Description

  Complex of multiple-bay two-storey outbuildings, arranged around a courtyard, with a walled garden to the east, built c.1800. Originally associated with Killynan House (now demolished). Now in use as agricultural outbuildings. Complex comprises five-bay two-storey structure on L-shaped plan, a detached three-bay double-height barn with carriage arches, a single-bay single-storey structure on hexagonal-plan to centre of courtyard and a number of ancillary structures in ruinous condition. Pitched natural slate roofs, now with sections of corrugated metal over. Constructed of coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings to openings. Square-headed window and door openings, with remains of multi-pane timber casement windows and timber battened doors, and segmental-headed carriage arches. Hexagonal structure constructed of brick with square-headed openings with timber louvered vents having hipped modern corrugated metal roof over, Timber porch supported on cast-iron posts serves square-headed doorcase with battened timber door to west face. Remains of extensive walled garden, on rectilinear plan, to east, constructed of rubble limestone with sections of brick lining to interior walls. Ruinous glass house to interior having remains of early heating system and related plumbing mechanisms. Complex set back from road to the northwest of Killucan with main entrance gates having dressed limestone gate piers (on square-plan) to the north. Remains of deerpark enclosure to the southeast.

• Clondrisse House, gate lodge, 1870–1900 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey former gate lodge, built c.1885, with canted bay windows flanking central projecting gable-fronted entrance porch with decorative bargeboards to entrance front (north). Hipped natural slate roof with central rendered chimneystack and replacement rainwater goods. Ruled-and-line rendered walls. Square-headed window openings having cut stone sills and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Paired sash windows to centre (north) of canted bays. Ogee-headed door opening having timber sheeted door with geometric fanlight over with timber trefoil design. Set back from road edge (north) with dressed limestone gate piers, on square-plan, with capstones over having wrought-iron double gates to the north. Rubble stone boundary walls to road frontage. Located to the north of Clondrisse House (15402003).

• Clondrisse House, house, 1780–1890 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached two-bay two-storey over basement house built c.1800. Extended, c.1885, with addition of substantial two-storey extension to the north. Double pitched natural slate roof having rendered chimneystacks, cast-iron rainwater goods and timber bargeboards with timber finials to gable ends at entrance front (east). Roughcast rendered walls over rubble limestone walls having brick dressings and cut stone dressings to openings. Render now removed to a number of elevations. Square-headed window opening with cut stone sills and variety of six-over-six pane, two-over-two pane and Wyatt windows. Box bay window to southeast corner of ground facade with cut stone sill and triple one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to front (east) having leaded hipped roof over. Square-headed door opening to northeast corner with moulded stone surround having glazed timber double doors with stained glass panels. Cut stone steps to entrance front. Substantial complex of outbuildings to the (south) comprising main two-storey dressed limestone outbuilding with square-headed openings and segmental-headed carriage arches having hipped natural slate roof over, flanked by single-storey buildings (15402037). Single-storey range of rubble limestone outbuildings with brick dressings to the openings having natural slate roof located adjacent to the house, at basement level, to the north. Main gates and attendant gate lodge to the north (15402002). Set back from road in extensive grounds to the northwest of Killucan.

• Clondrisse House, outbuilding, 1840–1880 · Regional interest
  Description

  Semi-detached three-bay two-storey outbuilding associated with Clondrisse House, built c.1860, with attached single-storey ranges to the east side. Hipped natural slate roofs (large slates) with dressed limestone chimneystack towards the centre. Constructed of dressed limestone with dressed limestone detailing to the openings. Square-headed window openings and segmental-headed carriage arches. Located to the south of Clondrisse House (15402003). Rubble limestone boundary wall to the east.
