• WM030-111 Castle - motte and bailey
  Description

  Situated on a low ridge to the immediate W of the Moate Road, directly S of Main Street in the town of Moate. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a substantial oval-shaped flat-topped mound. Monument described as a large steep-sided circular-shaped mound defined by regular sides. The top (dims. 19m N-S; 15m E-W) is slightly rounded and has an irregular surface. A fosse defines the base of the motte from S-SSW-SW and separates it from a high, triangular-shaped platform which represents the remains of a bailey. There is no indication of an entrance feature or of access to the motte from the bailey. The E side of the bailey has been disturbed by quarrying. Monument is clearly visible today as a roughly circular-shaped mound with a triangular-shaped bailey on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien.   Description

  Situated on elevated site c. 150m to N of Main Street, in the town of Moate. Not depicted on OS mapping. Bullaun stone described in 1983 as located outside the W wall of the Quaker burial ground (WM030-113----), just on the W side of the townland boundary between Cartronkeel and Aghanargit. A large bullaun stone (approx. T 0.3m) with two depressions is sitting on a pile of collapsed rubble. An oval-shaped depression (dims. L 0.5m; Wth 0.35m; D 0.3m) is visible on the centre of the stone. The second depression (dims. L 0.35m; Wth 0.25m; D 0.2m) is on the N edge of the surface, having been cut in from the edge.   Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c.1820, now in use as a public house. Modern extensions to the rear (west) and to the north. Half-hipped natural slate roof with a central pair of rendered chimneystacks (with decorative detailing) and having some remaining sections of cast-iron rainwater goods. Modern signage to roof on the main façade (east). Ruled-and-line rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth. Square-headed window openings with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to the first floor openings and replacement timber casement windows to ground floor openings. Round-headed doorway with moulded architraved surround having a fluted scrolled keystone over, a timber panelled door and with a plain fanlight. Rendered pub front to the south corner of the main façade and to the south elevation, comprising square-headed openings and with fluted pilasters having consoles brackets supporting plain fascia with a moulded cornice over. Prominently sited on corner site at a road junction to the west side of Moate with forecourt to the east.

  Terraced two-bay two-storey house, built c.1906. One of a pair with the building adjacent to the east (not in survey). Pitched natural slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods and a rendered chimneystack to either end (east and west). Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth. Square-headed window openings, irregularly spaced, with cut stone sills and replacement windows. Square-headed doorcase to the centre of the front façade (north) having decorative surround with raised pilasters, moulded hoodmoulding over with decorative label stops and with decorative rendered panels with inscriptions ‘Church Street’ and ‘1906’. Road-fronted to the west end of Moate.

• Saint Mary's Church (Kilcleagh), church/chapel, 1780–1790 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding Church of Ireland church, built c.1782 and altered c.1819 and c.1835, comprising a three-bay nave to the west, single-bay transepts to the north and south, a polygonal chancel to the east end and with an attached two-stage tower on square-plan to the west gable end having raised parapet with Irish-style crenellations over. Pitched natural slate roof with a raised stone verge to the west gable end and with a projecting corbelled eaves course. Curved roof to the east end over chancel. Constructed with rubble limestone with roughcast rendered finish over to the south side of nave. Roughcast rendered finish to tower. Pointed-arched window openings to the nave openings and to the end elevations of transepts having timber sliding sash windows with intersecting tracery to heads. Pointed-arched window to the chancel gable having Y-tracery and stained glass windows. Pointed-arched windows to the east faces of transepts with triple-light stained glass windows. Pointed-arched doorcase to the north face of tower, set within a raised square-headed cut stone surround/panel, having timber double doors. Pointed-arched openings over doorway to the belfry having timber louvers. Interesting interior to church with decorative tiled floor, moulded ceiling cornice, timber panelled choir/balcony to the west end, decorative carved timber pulpit and a number of memorial monuments. Set back from road to the west end of Moate, surrounded by a graveyard on rectangular plan. Rubble limestone wall with wrought-iron railings over to road frontage (north). Main entrance gates to the north, comprising a pair of rubble limestone gate piers (on square-plan having cut stone capstones) supporting a pair of wrought-iron gates.

  Terraced four-bay two-storey house, built c 1830, having an integral segmental-headed carriage arch to the east end. Pitched natural slate roof with three rendered chimneystacks. Ruled-and-line rendered walls over a smooth rendered plinth with rusticated quoins to the corners. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills, one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows and having projecting keystone detailing over. Square-headed doorcase, offset towards the west end of the front façade (north) having cut stone surround with keystone detailing over and having a panelled timber door with plain glass overlight. Road-fronted to the west end of Moate.

  Detached three-bay two-storey parochial house built, c.1867, having an advanced gable-fronted bay to the north end of the main façade (east), a gable-fronted bay to the south end of the main façade and a central gable-fronted single-bay entrance porch. Two-storey return to the rear (west). Pitched slate roofs having two rendered chimneystacks, aligned parallel to roof ridge, and a gablet to the centre, above porch. Roughcast rendered walls over a chamfered cut stone plinth with rasied quoins to the corners. Exposed sandstone construction to projecting porch. Square-headed window openings to the ground floor with three-over-three pane timber sash windows with decorative heads. Hoodmouldings over ground floor window openings. Tudor-arched window openings over to the first floor with three-over-three pane timber sliding sash windows. Cut stone sills throughout. Tudor-arched doorcase to porch with flush cut stone dressings and a timber panelled door. Flight of two curved stone steps to the front (east). Set back from road in shared mature grounds with associated Roman Catholic church to the east (15317024). Located to the centre of Moate, to the east end of Church Street.

• Saint Patrick's Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1865–1875 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding Roman Catholic church on cruciform plan, built c.1867, comprising a three-bay nave to the north, single-bay transepts to the east and the west, a shallow chancel to the south and a two-stage tower on square-plan having a broached spire over (with lucarnes and with a wrought-iron cross finial over), attached to the west side of the nave/entrance gable (north). Single-bay gable-fronted entrance porch to the north side of the west elevation of nave and various gable-fronted side chapels, a sacristy and entrance porches attached to the south side of the transepts. Pitched natural slate roofs with raised cut stone verges to gable ends having cut stone cross finials to apexes, clay ridge tiles and projecting eaves courses. Constructed of buff-coloured squared rubble stone with extensive ashlar limestone trim, including clasping and corner buttresses, dressings to the openings and flush quoins to the corners. Spire constructed of ashlar limestone. Rendered finish to chancel gable and to the south faces of transepts. Pointed-arched window openings to nave, pointed-arched windows with paired lights and Geometric tracery to end elevations of transepts (west and east), pointed-arched window opening to entrance gable/nave (north) having a triple-light Geometric window, quatrefoil windows to the north faces of transepts and a four-light window with Geometric tracery to the chancel gable. Pointed-arched doorcases with flush ashlar limestone surrounds and timber doors and double doors. Interesting interior with Victorian pictorial stained glass windows and with ashlar columns on octagonal-plan supporting pointed-arched openings to transepts from main body of church. Set back from road in extensive mature shared grounds, along with associated parochial house (15317023), to the southeast corner of Church Street. Wrought-iron gates and railings and cast-iron gate posts having cross finial over to the southwest side of site. Ashlar limestone plinth wall with cast-iron railings over and moulded ashlar limestone gate piers supporting cast-iron gates to the street-frontage (north).

  Gateway, erected c.1845, comprising a pair of dressed limestone gate piers on square-plan with cut stone capstones over. Sections of coursed squared rubble limestone walling run away to the north and the south. Gateway now forms entrance to a modern house with modern gate piers, walls and gates located inside gates to the east. Located to the east side of Station Road and to the north of the centre of Moate.

  Pair of semi-detached two-bay two-storey houses, built c.1930, each having an advanced gable-fronted bay to the entrance front (west). Hipped slate roofs, pitched to gable-fronted sections, having rendered chimneystacks and rendered eaves course/band with brackets. Smooth rendered finish to the ground floor with dry-dash finish over to the first floor, separated by a rendered string course. Simple rendered bands to gables (creating pediments) and raised rendered quoins to the corners. Square-headed window openings having timber sliding sash windows with margin glazing to the building to the north and replacement windows to the building to the south (retaining original glazing pattern). Square headed door openings with timber panelled doors having glazed overlights and surrounds. Projecting flat-roofed canopy over each doorway having a balustraded parapet over. Set back from road in own grounds to the north of the centre of Moate. Rendered boundary walls to the west.

  End-of-terrace three-bay three-storey house, built c.1860. Pitched slate roof with overhanging eaves supported on timber brackets, cast-iron rainwater goods and with four moulded four red brick chimneystacks. Ruled-and-line rendered walls with ‘belt buckle’ quoins to the corners. Square-headed window openings with moulded cut stone architraved surrounds, cut stone sills and replacement windows. Central segmental-headed doorway with moulded cut stone architraved surround (over blocks) having a replacement timber door with an overlight above. Set back from road to the west end of Main Street having a rendered boundary wall to the road frontage (south) having wrought-iron railings over.

Pitched slate roof, recently reslated, having a rendered chimneystack to east gable end. Smooth rendered walls to the ground floor with exposed rubble limestone walls over to the first floor, originally rendered, having raised block quoins to the corners. Square-headed window openings with stone sills, plain rendered surrounds and replacement windows. Road-headed doorcase to the east end having a replacement timber door and a plain fanlight over. Shopfront to the ground floor comprising a central square-headed doorway flanked to either side by square-headed fixed pane windows, plain rendered stallrisers and with fluted stone pilasters having fluted consoles supporting plain fascia board with moulded cornice over. Traditional raised lettering to fascia. Road fronted to the west end of Main Street.

  Detached five-bay three-storey bank, built in 1855, having advanced bays to either end of the front façade (south). Front facade flanked to either end sections of ashlar limestone walling having integral segmental-headed carriage arches. Pitched natural slate roof, partially hidden behind raised ashlar limestone parapet/blocking course, and having three rendered chimneystacks. channelled ashlar limestone construction to ground floor. Rendered finish to first a second floors with projecting cut stone sill course at first and second floor level. Square-headed window openings to first and second floors with cut stone sills and replacement windows. Windows to advanced bays are set in segmental-headed recesses. Round-headed openings to central three bays at ground floor level having cut stone sills, moulded string courses at arch springing level and fixed pane windows Square-headed doorcases to advanced bays to either end, having cut stone architraved surrounds with cut stone console brackets supporting cut stone canopies/entablatures over. Timber panelled double-doors with plain overlights above. Cut stone steps to the front of doorways. Street-fronted to the south side of Main Street.

  Terrace of four two-bay two-storey houses, built c.1870. Two houses remain in domestic use with two now in use as commercial premises. Pitched natural slate roofs with overhanging eaves supported on paired brackets, decorative clay ridge tiles/cresting and brick chimneystacks having terracotta pots over. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth courses. Segmental-headed window openings with cut stone sills and mainly two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Replacement windows to building to the west end. Segmental-headed doorcases with timber doors and with two-pane overlights above. Square-headed window and door openings to replacement shopfront to building (second building from the east). Road fronted to the south side of Main Street.

  Description

  Freestanding ashlar limestone memorial monument, erected 1925, comprising a Celtic cross on tapered shaft (having Celtic strap work detail) over a tapered base and with a stepped plinth. Inscribed dedication to base. Set back from road to the north of Moate Courthouse (14317046), surrounding by an ashlar plinth wall with iron railings over. Gateway to the north side comprising a pair of ashlar gateposts supporting a simple wrought-iron gate.

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey bow-fronted former court house and bridewell, built c.1828, with flanking sections of ashlar limestone walling to either side (east and west) having integral hexagonal-headed carriage arches. Formerly in use as a fire station and now in use as a library. Pitched natural slate roof hidden behind a raised ashlar limestone parapet with a moulded ashlar limestone sill course at first floor level. Constructed of ashlar limestone having ashlar limestone trim, including four giant order Tuscan pilasters (dividing bays) and a projecting sill course at first floor level. Roughcast rendered finish to side elevation. Square-headed window openings with six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to front façade at first floor level. Square-headed blind window opening to the centre of the ground floor, flanked to either side by a square-headed doorways with timber double-leaf doors with overlights above. Square-headed window openings to side elevations having flush cut stone block-and-start dressings and iron security bars. Steel door to carriage to the east and steel gates to carriage arch to the west end. Set back from road in the centre of Moate.

  End-of-terrace three-bay three-storey over basement house, built c.1790, having a shopfront to the west end of the main façade (north). Hipped natural slate roof having two rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with rendered bands to the corners. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and having twelve-over-eight pane timber sliding sash windows to the ground and first floor openings and four-over-eight pane timber sliding sash windows to the second floor openings. Central round-headed doorway to the front façade (north) having a cut limestone architraved doorcase with scrolled keystone detail and a timber panelled door having a fanlight over. Square-headed openings to shopfront to the west end. Set slightly back from road with a low rendered plinth wall (with ashlar limestone coping over) to the east side of doorway to the front façade (north). Decorative cast-iron railings to the east side of doorcase. Rubble limestone boundary walls to the rear (south and southwest).

Integral segmental-headed carriage arch to the west end of the main façade (north). Pitched slate roof with overhanging eaves supported on pair timber brackets and having three moulded red brick chimneystacks, one shared with the post office to the east (15317048). channelled smooth rendered finish to the ground floor with ruled-and-line rendered finish to the first floor, separated by a moulded sting course. Vermiculated quoins to the western end. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash and replacement windows to the first floor openings. Round-headed doorway to the east end of the main façade having a timber panelled door with a spoke/radial fanlight over. Shopfront to the central three bays having square-headed openings and modern signage.

  Terraced five-bay single-storey double-height former post office, built c.1885. Pitched natural slate roof with overhanging bracketed eaves (supported on paired timber brackets), decorative ridge cresting and with a moulded red brick chimneystack to either end (east and west). Chimneystack to the west end shared with adjacent property (15317047). channelled rendered finish to walls up to window lintel level with ruled-and-line rendered finish over, separated by a moulded stucco/render string course. Vermiculated banded quoins to east side. Raised rendered lettering reading ‘POST OFFICE’, to centre of building above string course. Square-headed window openings with timber casement windows. Round-headed doorcases to the centre and to the east end of main facade end of main façade (north) having timber panelled doors with spoke fanlights over. Road-fronted towards the centre of Moate.

• Building misc, mill (water), 1760–1800 · Regional interest
  Description

  Terraced nine-bay three-storey commercial building/mill built c.1780, having a multi-bay three-storey return to the rear (south). Later shopfronts to the west end and towards the east end of the main façade (north). Currently out of use. Pitched natural slate roof with three chimneystacks, two smooth rendered and one of cut stone to the west end having two square pots bridged by capping stone. Smooth rendered finish to the ground floor with roughcast rendered finish to the upper floors. Square-headed window openings, diminishing in size to the eaves, having cut stone sills and timber sliding sash windows (two-over-two pane to the first floor and early three-over-three pane to the second floor). Square-headed doorcases with timber doors and segmental-headed carriage arches with corrugated sheeting to the ground floor. Road-fronted to the east end of Moate.
