  Description

  Situated on a small steep natural hillock in undulating grassland, with good views in all directions. Ringfort (WM013-078----) 35m to SE. Present remains consist of a sub-circular raised area (approx. diam. 20m NW-SE; 22m NE-SW) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank with shallow external fosse. The bank has been reduced to a scarp from NE-S. The fosse is visible from NW-N and from S-W. There is a possible entrance gap (Wth 1.8m) at E. The interior rises slightly towards the centre where the grass covered wall footings of a hut site (WM013-077001-) are visible. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI.   Description

  Situated on a natural hillock in undulating grassland, with good views in all directions, overlooked by a higher hillock on which ringfort (WM013-077----) is situated 35m to NW. A sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 24m E-W) defined by a scarp which is enclosed by a flat area or berm (Wth 8-10m), defined by a bank with external fosse. The enclosing bank is fragmentary and has several gaps of modern appearance. The interior rises appreciably with vague traces of a possible house site (WM013-078001-) visible in the centre. • WM013-079 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  Situated on a small natural rise in gently undulating grassland, overlooked by higher ground on all sides. Ringfort (WM013-079---) 140m to S. A circular shaped area (approx. diam. 22m NE-SW) enclosed by two poorly preserved earthen banks and a shallow intervening fosse. Stone facing is visible in the internal face of the inner bank, and the fosse and outer bank have been levelled from E-SW. There is a possible entrance gap (Wth 1.1m) at WSW. A field fence running NE-SW intersects the perimeter of the monument at E. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. Monument surveyed in 2015 and described by McGuinness (2015, 72) as following: ‘This monument is very similar to WM013-074---- in both form and dimensions, comprising a broad, steep-sided, flattish topped mound or platform of stony earth (Diam. (flat top) 22.1m N-S x 21.6m E-W) rising from a lower platform (Diam. 33.8m E-W) to create a stepped effect. As with WM013-074----, upper surface of monument is gently domed. The key distinction between the two sites is that there are clear but heavily denuded traces of a cashel wall around edge of upper step, with boulder revetment on its inner face, which rises 0.27m over the interior where highest at ENE, and 1.38m over the lower step where the latter is best preserved at NW. Part of cashel wall has been almost completely removed from disturbed SE edge of upper step. Lower step is best preserved at W and NW, where it is 3.50m in width, but it has been partly removed on SE side where a drainage ditch has been dug running NE-SW. On N side of monument, where external ground is higher than the lower step, it has been cut through for the step, giving the impression of a ‘ditch’, 2.8m across, and outer ‘bank’; the cashel wall rises 1.25m above the ‘ditch’. There appears to be no evidence for an entrance, but this need not be surprising in view of poor state of monument. Monument lies only c. 300m to SE of the unclassified-barrow in Edmondstown (WM013-074----) which it closely resembles. About c. 120m SSE of the present site is a much larger but again fairly similar monument (WM013-080----) named ‘Rathmore’ on OS 6” map; but, with clear traces of a cashel wall around parts of the otherwise flat perimeter of its high central platform or upper ‘step’, and structural foundations in its interior, this very prominently positioned earthwork is more obviously a ringfort. Its lower step has also has clear evidence for a bank at its outer edge, though erosion in places makes it appear more as a step. These three closely set sites are all visible from one another'. • WM013-081 Settlement cluster
  Description

  Situated on the S face of a prominent rocky knoll. Chapel site (WM013-088----) located 460m to S. Depicted on the 1838 ed. OS six inch map as a complex of fields and small rectilinear enclosures annotated as ‘Old Town’. The OS field name books (No. 49, 29) recorded that 'in the centre of the townland of Tevrin a good many houses now in ruins. It is therefore called the old town'. An area of linear banks and foundations of rectangular shaped houses defined by grass-covered earth and stone banks covering an area approx. 3 hectares in size. These earthworks represent the remains of a clustered settlement annotated as 'Old Town' on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map. These earthworks are clearly visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph. • WM013-086 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a small hillock of rock outcrop, surrounded by undulating grassland, with fairly good views all around. A circular shaped area (approx. diam. 23m N-S) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone. The bank is fragmentary and comprises a considerable amount of rock. There is a possible entrance gap (Wth 1.2m) at SE. A field fence running NE-SW uts through the perimeter of the site from NE-S, and a second field fence intersects the monument at NW. • WM013-087 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low hillock in undulating rocky grassland. The road which forms the townland boundary with Killynan lies 20m to W. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular shaped mound with enclosed by a fosse and annotated as a 'fort' on the OS Fair Plan map. Partially hachured as a sub-circular shaped monument on subsequent editions of the OS 6-inch maps indicating that the monument had been partially quarried away. The upstanding monument was described in 1967 as a natural hillock which had been partially quarried with the sides of the hillock levelled up in places form a terrace defined by a bank or scarp (H 1.2m) with no external fosse visible. Mass rock (WM013-119----) located at E edge of field consists of a natural boulder possible splintered by weathering (OPW Field Report 14/11/1967). It is not clear whether these earthworks represent the remains of a medieval field system or are settlement earthworks associated with the chapel. A stream located 35m to S marks the townland boundary with Killynan. Remains consist of a slightly raised sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 42m NW-SE) enclosed by a low earthen bank and shallow external fosse. The bank is fragmentary (H 1.2m), and the fosse is best preserved from SW-W. The grounds of the R. C. Chapel have cut across the E quadrant of the monument, removing the perimeter and part of the interior from NE-SE (CUCAP BDV086). The interior of the ringfort is level and contains traces of four possible hut sites (WM013-089001-/089002-/089003-/089004-) and a possible collapsed souterrain (WM013-089005-). • WM013-119 Mass-rock
  Description

  Situated in undulating rocky grassland with site of chapel (WM013-088----) 280m to E. Ringfort (WM013-087----) 140m to W and second ringfort (WM013-086----) 130m to N. Large boulder known locally as 'Finn Mac Cool's Pebble', described in 1967 as a mass rock located near E edge of field. Present remains consist of a natural boulder possibly splintered by weathering (OPW Field Report 14/11/1967). According to the local landowner this rock was known locally as the 'Mass Rock'. Bush marked on digital globe aerial photograph appears to mark site of mass rock. In 1934 the following folklore about this mass rock was collected from Turin National School; 'Finn Mac Cool was supposed to be, one day, marching from Killucan past Edmonton to Turin. Meeting a large rock, in his path, he stooped down, and taking it up on his fingers, as tho' it were a pebble, threw it before him. The supposed pebble did not fall again to the ground until it reached Turin church - 21/2 miles distant. There it dropped into a field and is there to this day. Known by the name of "Finn Mac Cool's Pebble". It has been said that on this same rock in Turin, Mass was said during the "bad times" after burning of old chapel [WM013-088---] which was situated near rock' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0737, Page 004; www.duchas.ie). A second story from the same school gave the following account; 'A Mass Rock, where the priest said Mass in the Penal times is still to be seen in Turin ranch. The people came to this rock to hear Mass, at 12 o'clock at night. While the priest said Mass, some men were up in the trees watching, fearing the arrival of the "Red Coats" from Mullingar. The path to the Mass Rock is still to be seen on the field and is called the "Mass Path'(The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0737, Pages 017-18). • Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1820–1840 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding Roman Catholic chapel on cruciform plan, built c.1830. Comprises two-bay nave, two-bay transepts to east and west and a single-bay chancel to the north. Extension to west side of nave and modern lean-to extension to south end. Now in use as a community hall. Pitched natural slate roof with raised limestone verges and cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered chimneystack to extension to west. Roughcast rendered walls with raised quoins to corners. Pointed-arched window openings with ashlar block-and-start surrounds, now mostly block-up with modern casement windows inserted. Round-opening to nave gable (south) with quatrefoil tracery. Pointed-arched doorcases with ashlar block-and-start surrounds to transepts, now blocked. Set slightly back from road with gravel forecourt to east.
