• WM026-034 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a prominent rise, in gently undulating pasture, with excellent views in all directions. Annotated ‘fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a roughly circular-shaped tree-planted earthwork . Shown on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a subcircular-shaped earthwork bisected by a trackway running ENE-WSW. Levelled monument described in 1971 as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork (dims. 42m E-W; 41.30m N-S) defined by a very slight scarp. A modern fence curves just outside the scarp from ESE-S-W and a cropmark consisting of a yellow band of vegetation defines the exterior from WNW-N-E-ESE, suggesting the location of a fosse. The original entrance way is not visible. The interior has a slight E-facing slope and there are traces of E-W cultivation ridges running E-W across the S half. A depression running ENE-WSW across the centre of the monument defined a former demesne avenue associated with Larkfield House, which lies c. 200m to E. • WM026-040 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a rise, in undulating pasture, with good views to NW, N and E. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork defined by an inner scarp and an outer scarp which has been defaced by an orchard from E-S. Depicted on the revised 1913 OS 25-inch map as a subcircular-shaped earthwork enclosed by an inner scarp, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. Monument described in 1971 as almost completely levelled consisting of a roughly circular-shaped area enclosed by a low poorly preserved bank. The monument is primarily levelled from S-W-N-ENE and is defined by the remains of a low, levelled scarp from ENE-E-ESE. A small portion of bank (overall Wth 4.5m; Wth at top 0.3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.2m) is present from ESE-SSE-S. The original entrance is not recognisable. The interior is slightly uneven and has a general N-facing slope. A circular depression with slight mounds of upcast around it is located in the NNW quadrant. • WM026-042 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Sited on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture with good views in all directions. Bivallate monument described in 1971 as an oval-shaped area (dims. 36m WNW-ESE; 33.60m NNE-SSW) enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The inner bank is best preserved where it is steep from SW-W-N-NNE and is reduced to a scarp and which is gapped from NNE-E-S-SW. A wide fosse is visible from SSW-W-N-E. The outer bank is visible from WSW-W-N-N. A portion of modern fence extends outside the scarp and along the outer side of the fosse from N-NE-E and may have been fashioned out of the outer bank of the monument. The original entrance is not visible. The interior has a gentle SE-facing slope with an uneven surface probably due to underlying rock. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien.   Description

  Situated on an elevated area, in pasture, with extensive views to N. Annotated ‘fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a circular-shaped earthwork. Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped tree-planted earthwork. Levelled monument described in 1977 as the barely visible remains of a roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 28m E-W) defined by faint indications of a levelled bank from ENE-E-ESE and signs of a fosse from WSW-W-WNW. A modern field fence running E-W lies c. 15m to N and another field fence running N-S lies c. 25m to W. Monument is visible today as a roughly circular-shaped cropmark on OSi aerial photography. • WM026-074 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on flat grassland in SE corner of 18th/19th century ornamental woodland plantation associated with Violetstown House located 300m to N. This monument is an example of a ringfort reused as a tree-ring in the 18th/19th century as part of the landscaping of the demesne lands of Violetstown House. The ringfort stood in the SE corner of small square shaped woodland plantation (dims. 95m N-S; 120m E-W) consisting of oak, beech and chestnut. Present remains consist of a well preserved circular-shaped area (diam. 37m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank with external fosse and traces of an outer bank. The interior has been planted with oak trees. No clear entrance feature visible. A fosse running N-S intersects the SE side of the monument with a second fosse running E-W intersecting the site at S, both of which are boundary ditches associated with the post-1700 woodland plantation.   Description

  The remains of a roughly-circular tree-lined enclosure which could be the remains of a possible ringfort are visible on OSI 2005 aerial photograph (pers. comm. C. McCormack). Depicted as a rectangular shaped-area of waste land on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Depicted as a small natural hillock on the 1910 ed. OS 6-inch map. This enclosure may be a ringfort, alternatively it may be the remains of a small circular field of post medieval date which encloses a small natural hillock that was fenced off by landowner in the 19th century.   Description

  Information panel inside W porch of R. C. church at Gainestown mentioned the presence of a mass-bush in the townland of Vilanstown. According to the information panel 'during the 18th century mass was celebrated at the mass-bush at Vilanstown. This site is located close to an earlier monastic settlement.
