• WX007-020001 Mound
  Description

  Marked as a mound (diam. of base c. 40m) only on the 1940 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Situated towards the bottom of the W-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is a flat-topped grass and scrub-covered earthen mound (diam. of base 26m; diam. of top 8m; H 1-4m) with a pit (diam. 4m; D 0.6m) on the summit. There is a quarry c. 30m to the S, and it is possibly a spoil mound. The possible ringfort (WX007-002002-) is just to the W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). • WX007-020002 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Marked on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as an embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 35m), but it is not marked on a manuscript map of 1821 in NLI (14 A 23, 8). It is situated towards the bottom of the W-acing slope of Ask Hill, but no feature is visible at ground level in pasture. The cropmark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) defined by a fosse feature with a possible entrance gap at N is visible on aerial photographs (MM (53) 21, 22). A berm (Wth c. 10-15m) separates the fosse from an outer, perfectly circular ditch feature SW-N-SE. The ditch backs onto the cropmark of an E-W stream which originates at the mound (WX007-020001-) c. 10m ESE of the rath.   Description

  Situated on the NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. The cropmark of a D-shaped enclosure (diam. c. 30m) with the straight side at the NE and defined by a single fosse feature is visible on aerial photographs (MM (14) 30–35; (53) 28-9). It is also visible on Google Earth (14/07/2018). • WX007-068001 Fulacht fia
  Description

  This site was excavated (E3495) during 2005 as Site 34 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. Situated on the lower SW-facing slope of Ask Hill. A subrectangular trough (dims 1.6m x 1.5m; D 0.45m) with stake-holes at the corners was filled with burnt stone material, and there was a small burnt mound (dims 4.1m x 3m; T 0.1m) which seems to have been complete. • WX007-068002 Hearth
  Description

  This site was excavated (E3495) during 2005 as part of Site 34 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. Situated on the lower SW-facing slope of Ask Hill. A pit (dims 0.5m-2.2m E-W; 0.23-1.2m; D 0.4-0.5m) had been re-cut four times, and had contained a fire at least twice. Fulacht fia (WX007-068001-) is c. 20m to the SSW. • WX007-069 Flat cemetery
  Description

  This site was excavated (E3497) during 2005 as Site 37 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. Situated on the lower SW-facing slope of Ask Hill. Sixty pits were excavated in an area of c. 2000 square metres, but most of the features were in a small area (dims c. 20m N-S; c. 14m E-W) at the centre. The pits varied in size from a small pit (dims 0.4m x 0.23m; D 0.3m) to the largest (dims 3m x 5m; D 0.3m). Many of the pits, but not all, contained burnt material including burnt bone in varying quantities. Some pits had smashed prehistoric pottery, but glass beads and post-medieval pottery were also recovered. Fifty three post-holes and 150 stake-holes were also recorded, mostly at the centre of the site. No patterns were discernible in the stake-holes, but some of the posts may have marked particular pits, while others may have created features used in the cemetery.   Description

  This site was excavated (E3496) during 2005 as Sites 35 and 36 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. Located on the lower W-facing slope of Ask Hill. Two linear features (L 40m; 26m) met at right angles and appear to have been drainage ditches associated with a fairly modern field system. Nine small pits were also in the area. These were generally sterile but one produced a small amount of burnt bone. The mound (WX007-020001-) is c. 200m to the NNW and fulacht fia (WX007-068001-) is c. 150m to the S.   Description

  This site was excavated (E3496) during 2005 as Site 38 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. Located on the lower W-facing slope of Ask Hill. A group of five pits (diam. c . 0.7m-1.2m; D 0.15-0.9m) produced no artefacts but some hazelnut shell and charcoal flecks were present.   Description

  This site was excavated (E3499) during 2005 as Site 39 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. Located on the lower W-facing slope of Ask Hill. A slight slot-trench (Wth 0.18-0.4m; D 0.13-0.22m) enclosed a rectangular area (dims. 5.5m N-S; 4.4m E-W) which had an entrance (Wth c. 0.7m) on the W side flanked by post-holes. Each door-post had a companion and there are some possible corner posts. There were also two post-holes in the interior, but there was no evidence of a hearth. There was evidence of a post and plank construction in the slot-trench N of the entrance. No artefacts were recovered and the amount of charred grain suggests that it may have been a grain store that burnt down. Fulacht fia (WX007-074001-) is c. 100m to the NE.   Description

  This site was excavated (E3500) during 2005 as Site 40 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. Located on a slight shelf on the lower W-facing slope of Ask Hill. A mound of broken and burnt stone (dims 5.7m x 4.9m; T 0.27m) overlay a circular, nearly straight-sided and flat-bottomed trough (diam. 1.9-2m; D 0.95m) which had been re-cut. A group of stake-holes immediately to the S could have pre-dated it, but a roughly metalled surface partly overlies the trough, although also incorporated into the mound. Five pits (diam. c. 0.7m-1.5m; D 0.1-0.5m) at a distance from the mound (10-20m) are probably related as many contain burnt mound material. The furnace (WX007-074002-) is just S of the trough. A small oval cut (dims. 0.8m x 0.5m; S 0.18m) just S of the trough of fulacht fia (WX007-074001-) had fills with burnt clay and charcoal as well as metal slag.   Description

  This site was excavated (E3501) during 2005 as a part of Site 41 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. Located on a slight shelf on the lower W-facing slope of Ask Hill. An extensive burnt mound (dims 10m x 8.5m; T 0.4m) overlay a rectangular, flat-bottom trough (dims. 2.26m NE-SW; 1.44m NW-SE; D 0.35m) with hints of planking. There were groups of stake-holes outside the N and E angles and outside the SW side. A large pit (dims 3.7m x 3.3m ; D 1.15m) just to the NW was used to collect excess water and might also have had planking on the sides. Fulacht fia (WX007-074001-) is c. 100m to the S. • WX007-076001 Field system
  Description

  This site was excavated (E3502) during 2005 as a part of a complex area know as Site 42-44 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. An extensive area (dims. 250m N-S 48-60m E-W) across the road-take was excavated, but geophysical survey indicates that activity extended outside this to the E, W and SW. The seventeen sites identified are situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill, and are contained within the elements of the field system. Elements of a co-axial field system were recorded as two parallel ditches running E-W separated by a berm (Wth 2m) that was probably on the site of a field bank. The N ditch was discontinued (L c. 20m) at one point to avoid the ring-ditch (WX007-076009-). A contemporary ditch extends from the S parallel ditch while another NW-SE ditch ends 6m short of the double-ditches on the N side. All the ditch features extend beyond the excavated area.   This site was excavated (E3502) during 2005 as a part of a complex area know as Site 42-44 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. An extensive area (dims. 250m N-S 48-60m E-W) across the road-take was excavated, but geophysical survey indicates that activity extended outside this to the E, W and SW. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is ring-ditch F in area A, a circular area (int. diam. 3.5m; ext. diam. 5.35m) defined by a penannular ditch (Wth c. 0.9m; D c. 0.25m) interupted (Wth c. 2m) at the NW, but the gap is occupied by a pit (diam. 1.2m; D 0.1m) that contained a cremation. Two chared planks and cremeated bone were in the ditch together with lithics and a glass bead. Flat cemetery (WX007-076003-) is c. 8m to the ESE.   This site was excavated (E3502) during 2005 as a part of a complex area know as Site 42-44 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. An extensive area (dims. 250m N-S 48-60m E-W) across the road-take was excavated, but geophysical survey indicates that activity extended outside this to the E, W and SW. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is structure G in area A, a subrectangular concentration (dims c. 6m x c. 5m) of seven cremation pits (diam. c. 0.5m; D c. 0.2m) concentrated at the centre, surrounded by 19 post-holes, two pits and 21 stake-holes. The features were sealed with redeposited clay and charcoal-rich clays. Some outlying cremation pits produced lithics and some pottery. Lines of pits, sometimes doubled form the edges of the cemetery, with a slot-trench at the SW. Ring-ditch (WX076002-) is c. 8m to the WNW, and the pit-alignment (WX007-076006-) is c. 8m to the S.   This site was excavated (E3502) during 2005 as a part of a complex area know as Site 42-44 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. An extensive area (dims. 250m N-S 48-60m E-W) across the road-take was excavated, but geophysical survey indicates that activity extended outside this to the E, W and SW. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is ring-ditdh I in area A, a circular area (int. diam. 7m; ext. diam. 8-9m) defined by a penannular ditch (Wth 0.6-0.9m; D 0.25) with openings at W (Wth 3.6m) and N (Wth 1.85m). The ditch contained 169 quartz and flint artefacts, small quantites of cremated bone, and a single sherd of pottery. The ditch at E cuts a cremation pit of structure (WX007-076005-) and marked it with a post, indicating that it post-dates it. An extensive area (dims. 250m N-S 48-60m E-W) across the road-take was excavated, but geophysical survey indicates that activity extended outside this to the E, W and SW. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is structure H in area A, a rectangular area (dims c. 10m N-S; c. 7m E-W) between ring-ditch (WX007-076004-) to the W and structure (WX007-076006-) immediately to the E, and it might be interpreted as activity in the space between them. It consists mostly of stake-holes but two cremation pits and several post-holes are included. It produces no discernible pattern, although it may have been bounded on the E by a curving gully (C 5m; Wth 0.3m). It produced one crushed prehistoric pottery vessel.   This site was excavated (E3502) during 2005 as a part of a complex area know as Site 42-44 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. An extensive area (dims. 250m N-S 48-60m E-W) across the road-take was excavated, but geophysical survey indicates that activity extended outside this to the E, W and SW. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is Structure J in area A, where three parallel lines of pits are roughly aligned WNW-ESE. The N line consists of eight large but shallow pits extending from N of ring-ditch (WX007-076004-) to beyond the excavated area at E (L 16m plus). The S row (L 6m plus) has smaller pits and had some associated lithics and pottery, while the central row was shorter and equidistant from the other two. An extensive area (dims. 250m N-S 48-60m E-W) across the road-take was excavated, but geophysical survey indicates that activity extended outside this to the E, W and SW. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is at the extreme NW part of the excavated area. A feldspathic tuff stone with a rectangular cross-section (dims. c. 0.75m x c. 0.5m; H 1m) was excavated and found to have been prised from an underlying glacial erratic and wedged upright with waste from a dressing with iron tools. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is ring-ditch A in area B, a circular area (int. diam. 9.3-9.45m; ext. diam. 10.45-10.8m) defined by a narrow ditch with no opening. It was filled with silty layers that produced some charcoal and a few lithics but no pottery or cremated remains.   Description

  This site was excavated (E3502) during 2005 as a part of a complex area know as Site 42-44 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. An extensive area (dims. 250m N-S 48-60m E-W) across the road-take was excavated, but geophysical survey indicates that activity extended outside this to the E, W and SW. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is Structure B in area B, a subcirular area (int. diam. 6.95-7.4m; ext. diam. 8.45-9.1m) defined by an annular ditch (Wth 0.5m; max. D 0.45m). The fill of the ditch was largely sterile, apart from the uppermost which produced some coarse pottery and 27 lithics. There was one internal cremation pit (dims 0.44m x 0.36m; D 0.24m), which was inside the perimeter at SE. Ring-ditch (WX007-076008-) is just to the NE, and ring-ditch (WX007-076010-) is immediately to the N. The N ditch of the double-ditched field boundary in the field system (WX007-076001-) showed an awareness of this monument by terminating well away from it, but the S drain of this feature is immediately to the S.   This site was excavated (E3502) during 2005 as a part of a complex area know as Site 42-44 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. An extensive area (dims. 250m N-S 48-60m E-W) across the road-take was excavated, but geophysical survey indicates that activity extended outside this to the E, W and SW. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is ring-ditch C in area B. It is a circular area (int. diam. 5.5-5.6m; ext. diam. 6.8-7m) defined by a ditch with a U-shaped profile (Wth c. 0.6m; D c. 0.45m). The ditch had seven fills and produced 40 pieces of struck stone and two fragments of pottery, but no cremated remains were recoverd. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is a collection of cremation pits - D in area B - located 5-12m N of ring-ditch (WX007-076010-). It is a rectangular area (dims. c. 7m NE-SW; c. 7m NW-SE) containing at least five cremation pits and other pits, some with lithics and one with pottery. They are associated with a four-poster structure consisting of four post-holes in a diamond shape (dims. x. 3.5m x 3m) surrounding a cremation pit. • WX007-076013 Timber circle
  Description

  This site was excavated (E3502) during 2005 as a part of a complex area know as Site 42-44 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. An extensive area (dims. 250m N-S 48-60m E-W) across the road-take was excavated, but geophysical survey indicates that activity extended outside this to the E, W and SW. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is structure K in area B, located just W and NW of ring-ditch (WX007-076010-). It consists of two interrupted arcs of post-holes surrounding two larger post-holes, but the W half of the structure survives unexcavated, so its classification is uncertain. The central post-holes (dims 2.6m x 1.95: 2.03m x 1.8m) had sloping sides (D 0.25m) at the top leading to straight post-pits (D 1.75m; 1.85m), one with a stone at its base.   This site was excavated (E3502) during 2005 as a part of a complex area know as Site 42-44 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. An extensive area (dims. 250m N-S 48-60m E-W) across the road-take was excavated, but geophysical survey indicates that activity extended outside this to the E, W and SW. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is a possible funerary enclosure - structure E - in area C, and is located c. 25m SE of ring-ditch (WX007-076009-) in Area B. It is a penannular enclosure (diam. 24m) defined by a slot-trench (Wth 0.5m; D 0.3m), with an entrance (Wth 1.5m) at NNE marked by post-holes at the termini of the slot-trench. There are some post-holes in the slot-trench close to the opening. At the centre are nine cremation pits in a small area (dims 6m N-S; 3m E-W). The central cremation pit was the largest (diam. 1m; D 0.13m). There were no lithics and one of the peripheral cremation pits produced a bronze cross-mount (dim. c. 3cm) of 8th century AD date, suggesting a Viking-era date and origin for the enclosure. • WX007-076015 Pit-burial
  Description

  This site was excavated (E3502) during 2005 as a part of a complex area know as Site 42-44 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. An extensive area (dims. 250m N-S 48-60m E-W) across the road-take was excavated, but geophysical survey indicates that activity extended outside this to the E, W and SW. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is a burial in Area C, c. 17m to the SW outside the perimeter of enclosure (WX007-076014-). An oval pit (dims 0.93m x 0.7m; D 0.15m) was cut into the N edge of a tree bowl and contained the crushed rim of an inverted cinerary Urn and a large cremation deposit resting on a stone. There was another cremation pit (diam. 0.55m; D 0.3m) with no pottery just 3m to the E, and both pits may have had marker posts. There were three isolated cremation pits in the extensive area W of enclosure (WX007-076014-), and there were clusters of small pits, some with pottery sherds in this area.   This site was excavated (E3502) during 2005 as a part of a complex area know as Site 42-44 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. An extensive area (dims. 250m N-S 48-60m E-W) across the road-take was excavated, but geophysical survey indicates that activity extended outside this to the E, W and SW. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. This is Area D, c. 40-60m S and SW of enclosure (WX007-076014-) in Area C. Activity was thinly scattered in this area and consisted of two islolated cremated pit burials, and an isolated hearth. In the SW of the area two pit burials were close together, and within 4m an almost complete pot was recovered from a shallow depression and a much truncated pot was also recovered within the same range. Situated on the lower NW-facing slope of Ask Hill. The geophysical survey conducted in October 2005 by Target Archaeological Geophysics outside the excavated area produced evidence of a ring-ditch (ext. diam. c. 10m) located c. 90m WNW of the ring-ditch (WX007-076010-). This ring-ditch may have an opening at S, on the side towards the enclosure (WX007-076018-), which is c. 10m to the S.
