• WX024-001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a NE-facing slope in the foothills of White Mountain. This is a circular area (diam. 43.5m NW-SE; 41.5m NE-SW) defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 3.5-4.5m; int. H 0.2-0.8m; ext. H 0.7-1.4m), with external stone cladding E-S. There are some gaps in the perimeter at W but the original entrance cannot be identified, and there is no visible fosse. It is overlain by a NE-SW field wall that zig-zags across the site; it is planted with coniferous trees to the SE and is covered in scrub to the NW of this feature. Archaeological testing (07E0075) immediately to the N uncovered linear stone features that may be elements of a field system (Tierney and Rooney 2007). • WX024-002001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located on the E-facing slope of a W-E spur in the foothills of White Mountain. This is a circular grass and fern-covered area (42.3m E-W; diam. 40.7m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 5-6.3m; int. H 0.8-1.2m; ext. H 1.8m), with an outer fosse (Wth of top 6-7.8m; Wth of base 2-2.5m; D 0.7m at E to1.8m at W) and external bank (Wth 3m; ext. H 1m) surviving S-NNW and NNE-SE (max. ext. dim. 60m E-W). There is an entrance through the inner (Wth 5m) and outer (Wth 3m) bank at ESE. There is a tradition of burial in the interior but there is no evidence of a church or burial.   Depicted faintly as a rectangular structure (dims. c. 15m N-S; c. 8m E-W) in the centre of rath (WX024-002001-) which is described as the site of a church on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. • WX024-004 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Marked as a rectangular embanked or moated enclosure (ext. dims. c. 40m E-W; c. 35m N-S) on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as a D-shaped enclosure truncated by a NNE-SSW field bank on the E side on the 1925 ed. It is located on a gentle E-facing slope in the foothills of White Mountain and was described in the 1940s as a circular area (diam. c. 20m) defined by an earthen bank with slight traces of a fosse (SMR file). It has been removed since the 1960s, and nothing is visible at ground level in pasture.   Description

  Situated towards the bottom of the SE-facing slope of White Mountain, and at a slight col between the mountain and a low hill, the summit of which is c 800m to the SE. This is a circular area (diam. 46m N-S: 44m E-W) planted with coniferous trees defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 4-4.5m; int. H 0.3m at E to 1m generally; ext. H 1m at S to 1.5m at E).
