  Archaeological testing (12E0306) in an area of c. 7 ha (c. 18acres) c. 250m WSW of the core of Gorey town (WX007-033----) identified and excavated two fulachta fia, three burnt mounds, a pit and a corn-drying kiln. This oval pit (dims 1.4m x 1.32m; D 0.28m) in Area A was at the crest of a slope down to a small E-W stream or drain and its fill contained burnt stone. It probably related to the burnt mound (WX007-085007-) 18m to the N. • WX007-085002 Fulacht fia
  Description

  Archaeological testing (12E0306) in an area of c. 7 ha (c. 18acres) c. 250m WSW of the core of Gorey town (WX007-033----) identified and excavated two fulachta fia, three burnt mounds, a pit and a corn-drying kiln. This fulacht fia in Area B was on the S side of a small E-W stream or drain and was covered by a substantial amount of silt. The oval mound (dims 20m ENE-WSW; 11m NNW-SSE; T 0.83m) contained several separate layers of heat-affected stones and sealed an oval trough (dims 2.25m x 1.63m; D 0.21m) that contained four fills, all of which contained heat-affected stones. There was evidence for in situ burning on the SW side and a total of 24 stake-holes are located on the N side of the trough. About 3m to the E is a second pit (dims 6.55m NW-SE; 0.8m NE-SW; max. D 0.8m) which is cut by the stream at N and which may have been another trough, although this is not certain. A sample from the primary fill of the trough produced a C14 date of 2035-1775 Cal BC.   Archaeological testing (12E0306) in an area of c. 7 ha (c. 18acres) c. 250m WSW of the core of Gorey town (WX007-033----) identified and excavated two fulachta fia, three burnt mounds, a pit and a corn-drying kiln. This large fulacht fia (dims 14m ENE-WSW; 11m NNW-SSE; max. T 0.45m) in Area D was on the S side of a small E-W stream or drain and c. 23m WSW of the fulacht fia (WX007-085002-) and 5m ENE of the burnt mound material (WX007-085006-). The mound sealed a large, sub-circular trough (dims 2.28m N-S; 1.97m E-W; max. D 0.43m) filled largely with burnt stone. The trough was cut by a smaller, circular pit, which also contained a high degree of stone. There were four stake-holes just S of the trough, and hazel from one of them produced a C14 date of 1010-834 Cal. BC.   Archaeological testing (12E0306) in an area of c. 7 ha (c. 18acres) c. 250m WSW of the core of Gorey town (WX007-033----) identified and excavated two fulachta fia, three burnt mounds, a pit and a corn-drying kiln. This rectangular spread of burnt mound material (dims 10m ENE-WSW; 5.5m NNW-SSE; max. T 0.5m) in Area F was c. 5m WSW of the fulacht fia (WX007-085004-) on the S side of an E-W steam or drain. Although it was rich in heat-affected stone with moderate charcoal inclusions there were no features beneath the mound and it probably relates to the activity at the fuacht fia. This burnt mound (visible dims 8.2m WNW-ESE; 5m NNE-SSW; max. T 0.42m) in Area G was on the NE side of a small E-W stream or drain and 72m E of fulacht fia (WX007-085002-). Two layers containing burnt stone were partially excavated, but no features were recorded. A sample from the lower layer produced a C14 date of 2280-2035 Cal. BC. The unexcavated portion of this monument is preserved beneath an access road.   Single-span road bridge over railway line, opened 1863. Reconstructed, ----, producing present composition. Part creeper- or ivy-covered tuck pointed coursed or snecked rock faced walls between part creeper- or ivy-covered tuck pointed coursed or snecked rock faced battered piers with cut-granite chamfered stringcourses supporting benchmark-inscribed parapets having cut-granite chamfered coping. Sited spanning railway line with unkempt embankments to railway line.

  Remains of Union Workhouse complex, built 1840-1; opened 1842, including: Detached five-bay two-storey "Front Block" on a H-shaped plan with single-bay full-height gabled advanced end bays. Occupied, 1911. Closed, 1919. "Restored", ----, to accommodate continued private residential use. Pitched slate roof on a H-shaped plan centred on gablets to window openings (first floor) with terracotta ridge tiles, red brick Running bond chimney stacks on red brick Running bond bases having corbelled stepped stringcourses below capping supporting yellow terracotta pots, decorative timber bargeboards to gables on timber purlins, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on box eaves. Tuck pointed coursed rubble stone walls on cut-granite chamfered cushion course on plinth with red brick flush quoins to corners. Tudor-headed central door opening approached by flight of three cut-granite steps, red brick block-and-start surround having chamfered rebated reveals with hood moulding over framing glazed timber panelled door having sidelights on panelled risers below overlight. Square-headed flanking window openings with cut-granite sills, red brick block-and-start surrounds having chamfered rebated reveals with hood mouldings over framing replacement timber casement windows. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, red brick block-and-start surrounds having chamfered rebated reveals framing replacement timber casement windows. Set back from road in landscaped grounds.

  Detached three-bay single-storey house with half-dormer attic, extant 1904; occupied 1911, on an L-shaped plan centred on single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting porch abutting single-bay full-height gabled projecting end bay; single-bay (south) or two-bay (north) full-height side elevations. For sale, 2000. Disused, 2007. Pitched slate roof on an L-shaped plan on collared timber construction centred on gablet with clay ridge tiles, red brick Flemish bond chimney stack having "Cyma Recta" or "Cyma Reversa" stringcourse below capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta tapered pots, timber bargeboards to gables on timber purlins, and remains of cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on exposed timber rafters retaining cast-iron downpipes. Part ivy-covered red brick Flemish bond walls (ground floor) on red brick header bond chamfered cushion course on red brick Flemish bond plinth with paired red brick header bond "Cyma Recta" or "Cyma Reversa" stringcourse; roughcast surface finish (half-dormer attic). Segmental-headed central window opening with red brick header bond "Cyma Recta" or "Cyma Reversa" sill course, and red brick voussoirs centred on cut-granite keystone with fitting now boarded up. Paired square-headed window openings centred on square-headed window opening (half-dormer attic) with red brick header bond "Cyma Recta" or "Cyma Reversa" sill courses, and red brick voussoirs (ground floor) or concealed dressings (half-dormer attic) with one-over-one timber sash windows now boarded-up. Interior including (ground floor): central entrance hall retaining carved timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors; and carved timber surrounds to door openings to remainder framing timber panelled doors. Set in unkempt grounds.
