• WI031-043 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Discovered during the course of road improvement works on the N11 in 2003 (Excavation Licence No. 03E1038). A portion of a steep-sided ditch (referred to as F9 in excavation reports) (L 14.6m; Wth 1.8-2.2m), interpreted as that of a ringfort, was excavated (Lynch 2005, 17). This contained burnt animal bone, charcoal, heat-shattered stones, a fragment of a quernstone and the possible base of a quernstone. A second ditch feature (L 6.65m, referred to as F4 in excavation reports)was excavated to the N and the excavator suggested that this may also be part of the ringfort ditch.   Two hearths were excavated here in 2003 (Excavation Licence 03E1092) during the course of the road improvement scheme for the N11 between Newtownmountkennedy and Ballynabarney Co. Wicklow. Evidence of in situ burning was found in both and a flint fragment was recovered from one and a fragment of flint and nine triangular-shaped stones were recovered from the other.   Description

  This is the record for the pit excavated by Ellen O’Carroll (E3263) on the N11 road improvement scheme. The pit was subrectangular (1.1m by 0.45m by 0.1m) with three discernible fills and contained a substantial amount of charcoal, which may represent the remains of an oak plank that lay across the pit to facilitate activities that took place at the site. Alternatively, the pit could be associated with charcoal-burning activities and may be an isolated charcoal-burning pit. Burning did take place in situ as the natural clay was fire-reddened.   Description

  This is the record for the 'prehistoric activity' excavated by Goorik Dehaene (A022–074, E3260) on the N11 road improvement scheme. The site measured 30m by 30m. Four pits, fifteen stake-holes a deposit and post-holes and furrows were excavated. The stake- and post-holes contained prehistoric pottery.   Description

  This is the record for the excavation of a burnt mound by Goorik Dehaene (E3261) on the N11 road improvement scheme. The site measured 20m by 20m. A burnt spread (5.6m by 5.2m) and an oval pit (5m north–south by 1.5m by 0.34m) were excavated. The burnt spread extended westwards beyond the limit of the excavation.
