• WI025-045 Fulacht fia
  Description

  A mound (17m by 18.5m in size and 1.2m high) orientated north-east/south-west, had a slight dip in the north-west quadrant, giving it a characteristic horseshoe shape. It was archaeologicaly excavated (Licence No. 01E0654). Any cooking-related activity that was carried out on the site appeared to have been confined to the north-west portion of the mound, where three large pits/troughs were found in a linear arrangement along a north-west/south-east axis. The first and most substantial of these features was rectangular, orientated almost east-west, and measured 2m by 1.8m by 0.38m deep. Small fragments of decayed wood were noted within the base of its fill along the north-east and south-west edges of the feature, suggesting that it may have had a wooden lining that was subsequently removed. The second trough had been cut into the south-east edge of Trough 1 and was placed slightly askew of it, orientated in a north-west/south-east direction. This second trough was again rectangular but slightly smaller in size, measuring 1.6m by 1.7m by 0.24m deep. The third trough lay only centimetres from the south-east edge of trough 2, on an almost north-south axis. It had a less formal shape, measuring 1.8m by 1.4m by 0.25m deep where it was cut into subsoil. It appears to have been the latest of the three to have been dug; evidence from the section of the quadrant baulk suggests that it was cut through the main burnt mound material. All of the troughs had been filled with similar black charcoal-rich soils containing numerous heat-shattered stones (Bennett 2003, 409). Date of upload: 23 October 2012

• WI025-067 Enclosure
  Description

  Excavation of a number of archaeological features was undertaken at Inchanappa South, Co. Wicklow, between 26 February and 12 April 2002, as part of the N11 Ballynabarney-Newtownmountkennedy realignment scheme. Area A appeared to be the only area of the excavation to contain significant archaeological deposits. The main feature was a large, bivallate subsoil-cut enclosure (designated WI025-067--). The majority of features in Area A were contained within this enclosure. An apparent entranceway to the enclosure was located in the south-east. It was identified by two parallel rows of three posts running north-west/south-east and spaced an average of 2m apart. Two features were positively identified contained within the interior. One was heavily truncated from pre-excavation test-trenches. It was located in the north-western portion of the site and appeared to be the remains of a circular structure. The feature was identified by a series of ten pits/post-holes arranged in a roughly circular pattern, outside, which were faint traces of a possible slot-trench. Two large saddle querns were recovered from two post-holes also associated with the structure. In the southern portion of the enclosure another anomalous feature was recorded. It consisted of a number of lines and arcs of post-holes. In total there were thirteen post-holes and two pits clustered in an area of 9m east-west by 10m. There was no obvious discernible pattern to this feature, but it was considered to be possibly structural. A number of other potentially archaeological features were located to the north and west of the enclosure, only one of which proved to be archaeological Area B was concentrated around the base of the hill and was between Areas A and C. It was dominated by a large post-medieval pit dump situated in the eastern corner. Contained within this dump were numerous post-medieval red bricks, roof slates and ceramics. A large boundary ditch that descended from Area C was cut by this. It continued on the other side, from where it curved eastward to intersect with an existing field boundary. To the west of this was located the only other definite archaeological feature of the area, a subrectangular pit. From this a large number of pottery sherds and flint debitage was recovered. There were a number of other features initially identified in this area aspossibly archaeological but upon excavation none yielded material that could confirm this. Little of archaeological interest was uncovered in Area C. The largest and most significant find was a large boundary ditch (As, 'No archaeological material was recovered from this feature' - see below, I didn't create a separate record for it. G. Conroy). It continued from the top of the hill down the southern slope, through Area C and into Area B. Midway up the hill and 2m to the south of the field boundary was situated a hearth. The depositional sequence indicates that, after the initial period of use, there was an additional period of use. No archaeological material was recovered from this feature (Bennett 2007, 484-5). • WI025-075 Kiln - corn-drying
  Description

  Excavations under licence no. 02E0329 took place at Inchanappa Upper from 13 March until 24 April 2002. During this time 32 postholes, stake-holes or post sockets, eight burnt pit features, seven unburned pit features, two field boundary ditches, two ditches of unknown function, one trench feature, one natural depression and one recent cable trench were excavated. In the West Area there were two post-holes and four to five features that are the probable windbreak elements. In the Central Area there were two burnt pit features with post-holes in association, one isolated burnt pit feature and one area of oxidised earth that is spatially associated with a short trench. The North Area had no post-holes associated with the lone burnt pit feature. Also in this area was an oval pit feature with a small area of burnt shale. The central feature in the East Area of the site consisted of a probable corn-drying kiln that appears to have been attached to, or partially enclosed within, a hut structure (www.excavations.ie).   One of three possible fulacht fiadh (WI025-081----;WI025-082----;WI025-083----) exposed in the ploughsoil of this field. Situated close to the base of a SE facing slope in a field that has been recently ploughed. Site consists of a spread (dims. 6m x 7m) of charcoal and heat shattered stones ranging from broken cobbles to very small fragments. Date of upload: 30 October 2012

Situated on low rising ground on a SE facing slope in a field that has been recently ploughed. Located higher up the slope from possible ploughed out fulacht fiadh (WI025-081----). Only the N half has been exposed by ploughing, the S half was not ploughed over. Not clear how far S the site extends.   Description

  Situated on a SSE facing slope of a ridge on the W side of a narrow valley. No surface remains visible of the possible ringfort which appears as a cropmark under suitable growing conditions. The cropmark of this possible levelled ringfort is visible as faded or burnt line in the grass. There appears to be an entrance on the lower SE side.   Description

  Excavation Licence No. 02E0702 Excavation of six possible archaeological features was undertaken between 3 and 7 June 2002 as part of the N11, Ballynabarney-Newtownmountkennedy realignment scheme. Investigations have shown that five features are not of archaeological significance. Two of these were agricultural furrows and three were natural soil variations.   Description

  One of three fulacht fia (see also WI025-099---- and WI025-100----) identified during archaeological monitoring (Excavation Licence 04E1334) in 2004 (O' Donovan 2007, 485) and subsequently excavated in 2005 (Excavation Licence 04E1717). Described by Mc Loughlin (2008, 418) as 'a roughly circular burnt-mound deposit measuring 13m by 15m by 0.3m. Two pits interpreted as troughs were sealed by the mound.'   One of three fulacht fia (see also WI025-098---- and WI025-100----) identified during archaeological monitoring (Excavation Licence 04E1334) in 2004 (O' Donovan 2007, 485) and subsequently excavated in 2005 (Excavation Licence 04E1717). Described by Mc Loughlin (2008, 418) as 'a roughly circular burnt mound measuring 19.5m by 13.5m by 0.4m, which sealed three troughs and one shallow rectangular feature.'   Description

  One of three fulacht fia (see also WI025-098---- and WI025-099----) identified during archaeological monitoring (Excavation Licence 04E1334) in 2004 (O' Donovan 2007, 485) and subsequently excavated in 2005 (Excavation Licence 04E1717). Described by Mc Loughlin (2008, 418) as measuring 30m NW/SE by 14m with one circular trough and three small pits sealed under the mound. Architectural heritage

• Inchanappa House, house, 1810–1830 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached multiple-bay two-storey house, built c.1820 with colonnade added later. The house is finished in render. To the south-east side there is a later canted two-storey bay, while to the north-west there is a stable range with an Italianate tower, all of which was added c.1875. The panelled double front door has a plain fanlight and a plain granite surround. A long colonnade with Doric columns spans most of the ground floor south-west front. Window openings are flat-headed and most have one over one timber sash frames; there are some fixed lights and some casement replacement frames. The pitched roof is finished with natural slate and has cast-iron rainwater goods. The house is set within a small demesne.

• Inchanappa House, gate lodge, 1870–1890 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey with attic gate lodge, built c.1880. The gate lodge is finished in roughcast render. The window openings are flat-headed with replacement timber casement frames. The pitched and hipped roof is finished with natural slate with uPVC rainwater goods and decorative clay ridge tiles. The gate lodge is set adjacent to a curved gate screen with wrought-iron gates and railings.
