- WI007-019 Castle - unclassified
Description
Situated on level parkland in Powerscourt Estate. The present site of Powerscourt House has been identified with a castle built in Balyteny in 1316 which was in ruins by 1355 (Price 1953, 122-3). Between 1482 and 1500 a castle was built at Powers Courte by the 8th Earl of Kildare and this was destroyed by the O'Tooles in 1535. Repairs were carried out in the same year but in 1541 the castle passed into the hands of the O'Tooles. The castle was partly levelled in 1650 (Fitzgerald 1909-11, 127-39). The present house, itself destroyed by fire in 1974, was built before 1851 and may have incorporated part of the 16th-century structure (Price 1953, 122-3). There are no visible traces of early features. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). - WI007-035001 Church
Description
Situated on level ground on the edge of a sharp drop to the S and SE towards the Dargle River. This was called ‘Steach gConaill (Conall’s religious house)’ in Irish, which was the name of the parish (Pers. Com. Conchubhar O Crualaoich). Poorly preserved foundations of the W end of a church (surviving portion L 6m; Wth 5m) of uncoursed masonry (T 1m). It stands within a roughly triangular enclosure (dims. 40m E–W; 25m N–S) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.5m) and an external fosse (Wth 3m; max. D 0.8m). Some eighteenth-century headstones occur in the area to the S and E of the church. - WI007-086 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
Ring-barrow situated on the upper slope of a proposed development site with views of Bray Head to the E, Sugar Loaf Mountain to the SE, and Djouce mountain to the S. The public road located 70m to N marks the townland boundary with Parknasilloge. Unclassified megalithic tomb (WI007-021----) 370m to NNE, motte castle (WI007-018001-) 300m to SSW, St. Moling's holy well (WI007-016----) 550m to W. A detailed gradiometer survey was conducted by J. M. Leigh Surveys Ltd. under licence No. 18R0026 in the townland of Powerscourt Demesne, which identified a possible triple-ditched barrow (approx. overall diam. 25m). The site consists of a small circular area (approx. diam. 8m) enclosed by three widely spaced circular ditches. The outer circular ditch has a diameter of 25m, the middle ditch 16m and the inner ditch 8m (Leigh 2018, 4). Archaeological test trenching was undertaken by Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd. on behalf of Lota View Holdings Limited, under licence No. 18E0045 in order to archaeologically assess the results of the geophysical survey. The test trenching confirmed the presence of a probable barrow (c. 25m diameter), with three enclosing ditches. No evidence of a burial or cremated remains was identified during the test trenching (Lynch and Kavanagh 2018, i). The south‐western part of the barrow appears to have been removed by agricultural ploughing. Two of the three ditches were identified on the north‐eastern side of the site, although the outer ditch was sealed by a spread of archaeological material. The inner ditch was found to have a depth of 0.34m, which suggests that the entire monument has been subject to some truncation due to ploughing. A number of lithics were recovered during testing, including a quartz core, several individual pieces of quartz and a piece of flint debitage. The items were all recovered from the archaeological spread (C7) and the fill of one of the barrow ditches (ibid., 7). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 14 May 2018

- Powerscourt House, country house, 1730–1740 · International interest
Description
Detached multiple-bay part three-storey, part two-storey and part one-storey Palladian style former mansion, built 1731-40 to designs by Richard Castle, now in use as a visitors centre with gift shops. The house was extensively damaged by fire in 1974. It is constructed in granite. The central three-storey block is joined by single-storey links to two-storey wings. The central section is nine-bay with a five-bay pedimented break front and the two-storey wings are each four-bay. The first and second floors of the central bay are articulated with giant order Ionic pilasters; busts of roman emperors replace windows to the second floor. The composition is finished with curved walls which incorporate tall pedimented arched gateways and tall obelisks which carry eagles, the Wingfield crest. The house was constructed around the remains of an earlier castle and this causes the garden front to be slightly asymmetrical. To the south-east the garden front overlooks a formal garden and a lake; this has the Great Sugar Loaf mountain as a back drop. To the south is the Italian garden which incorporates many fine features including decorative gates and hot houses.
