  Description

  Situated on a natural level platform at a break on a W-facing slope of Spinans Hill. Circular enclosure (dims. 26m N-S; 24.5m E-W) defined by a bank (max. H c. 1.5m) and external fosse (max. Wth 4.3m), best visible at the S. There are several gaps but the original may have been that at the NNW, where there are possible traces of a causeway. There is an area of ridge and furrow cultivation (dims. c. 20m x 30m) immediately outside the site to the SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 December 2008

• WI027-102 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Depicted on the 1838 ed. OSi 6-inch map as a polygonal-shaped woodland plantation on the landscaped demesne lands of Kilranelagh House located 300m to S. Not depicted as an antiquity on any ed. OSi historic maps. Present remains consists of a raised sub-oval or polygonal-shaped area (dims. c. 60m N-S x 60m E-W) enclosed by a tree-covered earth and stone bank with external facing visible in places, fosse and external bank with faint traces of a possible outer fosse. A narrow break in the bank with a corresponding brake in slope to NE may represent the remains of an entrance. A post-1700 grotto has been built across the top of the outer fosse at S. Possible remains of a ringfort that was re-used as a landscape feature or tree-ring associated with nearby Kilranelagh House.
