- WI015-015 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a marked N/NW-facing slope on the S edge of a narrow steep-sided valley. Bivallate oval ringfort (dims. 34.3m E-W; 23m N-S) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 1.5-2m; H 0.3m at S - 2.5m at N) with an external fosse (Wth 2-3m), and an outer bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.8m) at the N. A revetment of low boulders survives in places along the inside edge of the inner bank and the outside face of the outer bank. There is an entrance (Wth 1.7m) in the inner bank at the N and the bank terminals are revetted with small boulders. No indication of internal features. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). Description
On a SW-facing valley slope, above a small stream which is a tributary of the Toor Brook. A D-shaped area (37m NE-SW; 39m SE-NW) enclosed by a large earth and stone bank (Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.1m) with traces of internal stone facing at N and external stone facing at W. The bank has been denuded along the N and S sides. A grove of conifers occupies the E quadrant of the interior with an L-shaped structure (4.7m NW-SE; 4.3m NE-SW) built up againt the inner face of the enclosing bank at SE. Description
On relatively level ground with a thin cover of blanket bog. Three standing stones comprising of a single stone opposing a pair. The single stone (max. H 0.9m; Wth 1.4m; T 0.25m) has a rough v-shaped profile at top and an E-W long axis. The opposing pair of stones are 2.1m NNE of the single stone and are 1.25m apart. Stone 'A' of the pair (max.
