Recorded monuments
- CL015-049 Ringfort - rath
Description
In low-lying pasture among gently rolling hills, overlooked by high ground to the E with good views to the S. Not depicted on the OS 6-inch maps. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the RMP (1996). A subcircular platform (25m N-S; 27m E-W; H 0.3-1.4m) enclosed by a flat-based fosse (Wth at base 2-3m; Wth at top 4-7m; D 0.4-1.8m) with no trace of an intervening bank. The ground rises to the E of the site making the outer edge of the fosse very deep here (D 1.8m). A dry stream bed, traceable as a linear rush-filled depression aligned NNE-SSW (L c. 250m; Wth c. 3m), enters the fosse at N, with the W side of the fosse originally forming part of the stream. The interior is flat with no visible internal features. A field boundary aligned NE-SW crosses the SE edge of the monument. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 10 July 2023
- CL015-056 Ringfort - rath
Description
In marshy pasture on top of a low rise with good views. Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the RMP (1996). A circular rath (diam. 44m SW-NE) defined by a low earthen bank (H 0.25-0.6m; Wth 5-6m) with traces of an outer fosse (Wth 2-3m) at E. One of two gaps (Wth 2m) at the NW may indicate a former entrance. The interior is level and featureless. An overgrown stone wall extends WSW-ENE across the N half of the monument. - CL015-057 Enclosure
Description
In marshy pasture on top of a low ridge with views to S, truncated by a boreen to the N. Not depicted on the OS 6-inch maps. Clearly visible on OSi MapGenie orthophotography 2004-2006. A subcircular enclosure (max. ext. dims. c. 60m NW-SE; 53m SW-NE) comprising a scarped platform (diam. c. 35m) outside of which is a shallow fosse (D 0.1m; Wth 1.5m) visible as a bank of darker vegetation. A low rise along the E may be the remains of an internal earthen bank and traces of the bank are visible on the N side of the boreen. A recent field bank extends SW-NE across the S half. The interior is flat and no features are visible at ground level. A modern house (c. 2005) has been built over the W side. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Eve Campbell Date of upload: 11 July 2023
