This lies within a much larger medieval field system (CL008-109001-) extending 4.5km along the coast from Doolin Point at SW to Ballyryan at NE that includes some 34 cashels and 26 enclosures. A subcircular cashel (c. 35.5m E-W; 33.5m N-S) defined by an overgrown stone wall is visible in aerial imagery (Digital Globe 2011-2013; OSi MapGenie 2013-2018). The site is defended from S to NNW by a natural craggy bluff. A subcircular cashel (int. dims. 17.5m N-S; 15m E-W) defined by a low collapsed and grass-covered wall and associated tumble (Wth 3-4m; H 0.35-0.6m); the outer wall-face (H 0.25m) is traceable at the SW. The N edge of the perimeter was cut by a later field boundary. The interior is level. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 12 October 2022
- CL008-057004 Platform
Description
On a natural rise with wide views, in rough pasture and limestone outcrop within a large multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). Hachured on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the RMP (1996). A subcircular platform (19.8m N-S; 19m E-W) defined by a well-preserved scarp (H 0.35-1.15m). At the W and S the perimeter has been dug into relatively recently. The interior slopes gently to the SE. The S half is covered with rubble and boulders, some of which may be field clearance. There is an enclosure (CL008-057008-) c. 71m to the NW. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 12 October 2022
- CL008-057005 Enclosure
Description
On a low rise in an area of rough pastureland and limestone outcrop, within a field system (CL008-057001-). Hachured on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. A D-shaped enclosure (23m NE-SW; 17.5m NW-SE) with its straight NW side defined by a modern field boundary. The enclosure is defined NE-W by a scarp (H 0.2-0.65m) at the top of which from SE to SW there is a low collapsed and grass-covered stone wall (Wth 1.8m; H 0.2m). This may be original, or may be a remnant of a former NE-SW field wall which is marked on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, overlying the SE edge of the enclosure. At the SW there is a gap (Wth 2.3m) in the scarp. Archaeological testing and subsequent topsoil-stripping carried out c. 30m to the ESE in relation to the building of a house did not uncover any archaeological remains (Read 2000, 15, No. 50). Description
Encompassing the top of a suboval hillock in rough pasture, in an area of undulating land with limestone outcrops within a field system (CL008-057001-). This suboval enclosure (42m NW-SE; 24m NE-SW) is defined by a collapsed double-faced stone wall (Wth 2.2-2.45m) which follows the top of the hillock's natural scarp. The outer wall-face (max. H 1m) survives to one/two courses all around, while the inner wall-face is most clearly visible at SE-S but only intermittently elsewhere. A grass-covered wall runs NE-SW across the N centre of the gently SE-sloping interior. The grassed-over remains of three houses of indeterminate date (CL008-057010-, CL008-057011- and CL008-057012-) lie in the S half. - CL008-062001 Barrow - stepped barrow
Description
On a prominent and steep gorse-covered hill with wide views, at the E end of a spur in an area of pastureland with overgrowth from N to E. Hachured and named 'Knockastoolery' on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map—this name perhaps deriving from Cnoc an Stualaire, 'the hill of the gallan or high stone' (Cunningham 1980, 86). Listed as 'Enclosure' in the RMP (1996). This subcircular stepped barrow (53m ENE-WSW; 50m NNW-SSE) comprises a three-levelled central mound (H 3.4-4m) surrounded by a fosse and outer bank. The fosse (Wth 2.2-3.5m) is traceable from SW to NW and at E. The overgrown, round-topped outer bank (Wth 6.3m; H 0.5-0.6m) is best preserved from SW to NW, while it is lower (Wth 4m; int. H 0.3; ext. H 0.4m) from NNE to SSE. Elsewhere there is no trace of the bank, while recent cattle activity has levelled it at the NE and opened gaps at the SE/SSE. The subcircular basal tier of the central mound (c. 35m ENE-WSW; c. 34m NNW-SSE; H 1-2m) is flat-topped. Rising within the E two thirds of this platform is a subcircular second tier (diam. 20.8-22m) defined by a scarp (H c. 1m); in the E part of this tier another scarp (H c. 1m) rises to a third subcircular tier (10.5m E-W). At the centre of this uppermost tier is a standing stone (CL008-062002-). It is oriented SSW-NNE. Beside this to the NE is a fallen slab (L 0.8m; Wth 0.41m; T 0.21m) of the same shape and possibly a fragment of the standing stone. Both stones are roughly shaped and somewhat weathered.
