• CL008-001001 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  On a low but prominent rise in limestone pavement and rough pasture, within a large multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). Hachured on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This subcircular cashel (int. dims. 23.75m E-W; 20.5m N-S) is defined by a double-faced stone wall, which is best preserved at NNW (int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.35m; Wth 2-2.2m). At N the wall is reduced to a stony scarp (H 0.35m). From NNE-ESE the collapsed wall forms a stony bank (Wth 5m; H 0.2m) with traces of both inner and outer wall-faces. At ESE the wall is wider (4.5m)—possibly reflecting a double outer wall-face built to shore up the wall on this steeply sloping ground. From ESE-W (H 1-1.25m) there are only intermittent traces of the outer wall-face. A later field wall cuts off the W limits of the NW quadrant from the rest of the interior, which is slightly dished and slopes to the E. A souterrain (CL008-001005-) lies in the enclosed area. There are two other cashels nearby, one (CL008-001003-) c. 45m to the NE and another (CL008-131----) c. 114m to the SE. There is also an enclosure (CL008-058----) c. 159m to the SSW. • CL008-001003 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  In rough pasture on outcropping limestone pavement, within a large multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). Identified by Celie O'Rahilly. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This subcircular cashel (21m N-S) is defined from S-SW and from NW-NE by a grass-covered stone wall. From NE-S the wall is reduced to a scarp (H 0.7m). No trace survives at W where a pathway runs into the cashel. There is a souterrain (CL008-001004-) in the centre of the interior. Another cashel (CL008-001001-) c. 45m to the SW. • CL008-001004 Souterrain
  Description

  Within a cashel (CL009-001003-). This souterrain is defined by a circular depression in the S centre of the interior, possibly a collapsed chamber, which opens into an underground passage (L 6.7m; Wth 1.6m; max. H 1.27m) extending NNW; as it does so it becomes narrower (min. Wth 1.1m). The base of the side-walls of the passage incorporate natural limestone bedrock, while the upper part is constructed of uncoursed drystone-walling. It is roofed with large limestone slabs. On the ground surface, to the E of the N end of the passage, a smaller circular depression in which drystone-walling is visible may be the remains of a second chamber. To the S of the passage, an area covered with undulating grassed-covered rubble and limestone uprights may be part of a further collapsed section, which would give it an overall length of 11.1m. • CL008-001005 Souterrain
  Description

  Located in the NW quadrant of a cashel (CL009-001001-), in an area cut off from the rest of the interior by a later field wall. Three large capstones (Wth 2-2.5m) visible on the ground surface indicate the presence of this souterrain. Gaps between the slabs revealed a drystone passage (L 3m; Wth 1.3m) oriented c. NE-SW. Undulations and depressions in the ground surface at both ends of the passage suggest that the rest of the souterrain has collapsed or has been quarried away. • CL008-002001 Megalithic tomb - court tomb
  Description

  In a slight hollow in an area of limestone pavement, overgrowth and rough pasture, within a large multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). Marked and labelled 'court cairn' on Robinson's (1977) map. This court tomb (c. 10m N-S; c. 5m E-W) comprises a probable two-chambered gallery accessed from the N through a semicircular court, and surrounded by several overgrown piles of rubble. The access court (int. dims. 4.8m E-W; 4.2m N-S) is open at the N and defined by upright limestone slabs (av. H 1.1m). The N end of the court is obscured by; on the W by an overgrown pile of slabs and on the E by a modern drystone wall. In the centre of the court's S side there is a gap (Wth 0.52m) between two uprights, providing access to the rectangular, N chamber (int. dims. 2.8m N-S; 2m E-W) of the tomb gallery. This is also defined by upright limestone slabs: four sidestones (two at E and two at W), and two uprights at the S. Between these S endstones there is a gap (Wth 0.4m) which may be the entrance to a second chamber to the S, represented by a single E sidestone (L 2.3m). There is an overgrown pile of rubble where this second chamber's W sidestone may have stood, while an E-W running modern wall immediately to the S may have damaged the chamber's S end. Summary by: Gearoid Conroy and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 6 December 2022 Additional note, Conn Herriott: There are currently five recorded court tombs in the Burren, including this monument at Teergonean, three others at Parknabinnia (CL017-180007-), Ballyganner North (CL009-059063-) and Leamaneh North (CL016-020029-), and a possible fifth (CL016-170----) at Ballycasheen. Jones (2003, 188) noted several unusual features in the court tombs at Parknabinnia (CL017-180007-), Ballyganner North (CL009-059063-) and Leamaneh North (CL016-020029-), particularly a narrow, straight-sided forecourt about as wide as the chambers, and a roughly circular or U-shaped cairn, and suggested that these monuments ‘should perhaps be referred to only cautiously as ‘court’ tombs until their relationship to court tombs is better understood.’ Jones (ibid., 193) noted that by contrast with these monuments, the Teergonean court tomb (CL008-002001-) is similar to many northern court tombs with its wider forecourt. However, he (ibid.) also observed that Teergonean court tomb may have had a circular or U-shaped cairn, in common with those at Parknabinnia (CL017-180007-), Ballyganner North (CL009-059063-) and Leamaneh North (CL016-020029-). The details and affinities of the possible court tomb (CL016-170----) at Ballycasheen await further investigation, but it does appear to be set in a low subcircular cairn.

• CL008-002002 Enclosure
  Description

  In rough pasture on limestone pavement within a large multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). Indicated on Robinson's (1977) map of the Burren. Visible on OSi aerial imagery dated 2005 as a small roughly square enclosure (c. 16m WNW-ESE; c. 15m NNE-SSW). Described by O Rahilly (pers. comm. 1995) as ‘a circular platform enclosure’. More recent aerial imagery (MapGenie 2013-2018) indicates that it is heavily overgrown. There is a court tomb (CL008-002001-) c. 75m to the W.   Description

  On a rise in limestone pavement in coarse pasture, within a large multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). Hachured on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This almost circular cashel (21m E-W; 20.5m N-S) is defined by a low collapsed and grass-covered limestone wall (int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.35m; Wth 3.8-5.5m), with a 4m stretch of its outer wall-face visible at N. A later sheepfold is built against it at W. The interior is slightly concave. This D-shaped enclosure (33m E-W) with a straight E side (L 32.5m) is defined by a collapsed and grass-covered wall/bank (Wth 2-3m; max. H 0.5m). The interior is slightly concave.   Description

  At the top of a gorse-covered rise on a low W-facing spur in pasture, with wide views. Hachured on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. This circular ring-barrow (diam. 24m) is defined by a shallow, flat-based fosse (Wth 1.5-1.9m) and a low, rounded outer bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.1-0.2m; ext. H 0.15-0.2m). The central mound (diam. at base 14.4m; diam. at top 11.9m; H 1-1.4m) is flat-topped and steep-sided. There is a small loose upright stone slab (H c. 1m; Wth c. 0.2m; T c. 0.2m) c. 25m to the SE. • CL008-069001 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  On a gentle SE-facing slope in pasture, with wide views except to the NW where there is higher ground. Hachured on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. This circular ring-barrow (22.8m WNW-ESE; 20.4m NNE-SSW) is defined by a shallow, flat-based fosse (Wth 0.9-1.1m at base) and traces of a fern-covered outer bank (Wth 3-3.5m; int. H 0.3-0.5m; ext. H 0-0.2m). At the E there is a gap (Wth. 3.5m) in the bank and a causeway over the fosse. The very low central mound (14.1-14.3m; H 0.2-0.3m over fosse) is even and gently E-sloping. Another ring-barrow (CL008-069002-) lies c. 14m to the N.   Description

  Near the top of an E-facing slope in pasture, with wide views except to the NW where there is higher ground. Hachured on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. This gorse-covered and truncated ring-barrow (diam. 18.5m NW-SE) is defined SE-NNW by a shallow fosse (Wth 1.5m) and a low, rounded outer bank (Wth 2-3.2m; int. H 0.1-0.25m; ext. H 0.1-0.2m). At E-SE the only enclosing element is a scarp (H 0.2m). The central mound (diam. 15m E-W; H 0.1-0.2m) slopes to the SE, with an undulating surface. The NE third of the enclosing elements and mound are cut by a field boundary running NW-SE. There is no trace of the ring-barrow on the other side of this field bank. Another ring-barrow (CL008-069001-) lies c. 14m to the S. This overgrown subcircular ring-barrow (20.5m E-W; 17.5m N-S) is defined by a shallow, flat-based fosse (Wth 2-2.5m) and a round-topped outer bank (Wth 2-2.3m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.3m).   Description

  On level, overgrown, rough pastureland and limestone pavement, within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). This subcircular cashel (23m E-W; 21.25m N-S) is defined from E to W by a collapsed field-wall, from W to NE by a single course of drystone outer wall-face (H 0.2m) with occasional upright flags perhaps marking the inner wall-face. From NE to E the cashel is defined by a barely visible overgrown stony bank (H 0.2m). A gap (Wth 1.4m) in the stone wall at the S may be an entrance. The interior slopes gently to the NE.   Description

  On a very low rise in an area of pastureland and limestone outcrops, within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). This truncated subcircular enclosure (19m E-W; 18m N-S) is defined from NW to SE by a scarp (H 0.7-1m). From NW to NNW there is a length of bank (H 0.1-0.2m) along the top of the scarp. A modern NW-SE field wall overlies the SW quadrant of the enclosure, with no extant remains visible to the SW of this wall. The remainder of the interior to the NW of the wall is slightly concave.
