  Description

  On S-facing slope with quarry immediately to S. No visible surface trace of castle. Originally a Barry holding (MacCotter and Nicholls 1996, 208), Caherduggan became a possession of the Roches in the later Middle Ages (Ó Murchadha 1985, 134). Down Survey (1655-6) barony map shows castle here with mill to S and there are traditions relating to a settlement (CO025-153----) here; according to Grove White (1905-25, vol. 2, 11), person born in 1824 'remembered to have seen the remains of the old castle'. Both 1905 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps show site of castle in middle of field but 1842 OS 6-inch map appears to show castle c. 120m to ESE, c. 10m W of road.   Description

  In pasture, on gentle E-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; penannular area (36m N-S) formed by scarp (H 1.6m) survives NW->SW. Field boundary immediately to W of site removed, edge of enclosure on this side difficult to define. Site of Caherduggan Castle (CO025-01201-) shown on OS 6-inch maps as on or just outside N edge of enclosure.
