  Description

• CO025-025 Souterrain
  Description

  Discovered during ploughing in 1981 and investigated by Power (1984, 40-1). Collapsed lintel in roof allowed access to subrectangular stone-built chamber (L 3.2m; Wth 1.2-1.5m; H 1.5-1.8m; long axis N-S); walls corbelled; N end squared off; S end rounded; roofed by three sandstone lintels. Creepway (H 0.35m; Wth 0.35m) at N end; inaccessible but appeared to lead to narrow passage which rose steeply towards ground level, probably an 'entrance shaft' (ibid.). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000).   Description

  Cropmark of fosse of roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 50m) visible in aerial photograph (CASAP, July 1989). Linear cropmark (E-W), possibly a levelled field fence, extends across N third of site and into surrounding field.
