  A promontory approached by a natural causeway only 2.4m wide. Along the W side of the promontory is an earthen bank.75m high.   Description

  Internal dimensions 27m E-W, 13m N-S A neck of land defended by sharp drops on all but its W side where there is an earthen bank 1.25m high and a fosse about 12m long and 5m wide. The fosse is rock cut, some of the stone possibly being used for the facing on the outer side of the bank. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal.   An oval shaped cairn 4.6m N-S and 2.7m E-W. It is 1.25m at the S or higher end but .25m at the N. It is faced by a carefully constructed kerb except on the W where it has collapsed. • Carthage House, house, 1770–1780 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c. 1775, with stair return and single and two-storey extensions to rear, and dormer attic. Pitched artificial slate roof, with central skylight to front, smooth rendered chimneystacks with rendered coping to gable ends and replacement rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls with rendered articulated block-and-start quoins and smooth rendered plinth course to front elevation, with roughcast rendered walls to other elevations. Square-headed window openings with smooth rendered plain stucco lugged architraves with ancones with six-over-six replacement windows and painted sills. Round-headed door opening with plain stucco surrounds and ancon to crown of arch, with replacement timber panelled door and glazed fanlight. Various outbuildings to the rear and north, including contemporaneous detached four-bay two-storey former stables with pitched slate roof with rendered gable coping; rubble stone walls; square-headed window openings with red brick lintels to ground floor; square-headed door openings with red brick lintels to ground floor. Single-storey barns with pitched slate roofs; rubble stone walls with tooled quoin details. Square-headed window and door openings. Modern single-storey outbuildings with pitched corrugated tin roofs; whitewashed rubble stone walls and square-headed window and door openings. Set within own grounds, bounded by substantial rubble stone walls to all sides, with long driveway leading from the south-west with substantial rubble stone gate piers, one rendered and with pyramidal coping, surmounted by strap-iron gate.

  Detached six-bay single-storey vernacular thatched house built c. 1820, with modern flat-roof porch to front, flat-roof extension to rear and outbuilding to gable. Rounded pitched thatched roof and rendered chimneystacks with rendered coping. Smooth rendered whitewashed walls. Square-headed window openings with two-over-two, and six-over-six timber sash windows, and painted sills. Square-headed opposing door openings to the north and south of the porch with glazed timber doors. Attached outbuildings with pitched corrugated tin roofs, with smooth rendered walls and square-headed door openings. Set within own grounds bounded to the north, east and west by smooth rendered walls with concrete coping; contemporary gate mounted on smooth rendered piers with pyramidal coping.

  Description

  Detached gable-fronted four-bay single-storey lifeboat house, built c. 1870, with internal first floor lookout platform. flat-roof hidden by parapet. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls on plinth course with coping to eaves level moulded render course to parapet level; curvilinear gable to front with commemoration stone and stucco pilasters surmounted by pediment. Square-headed window openings with one-over-two timber casement windows and stone sills; single circular window with cruciform stucco surrounds to east elevation. Square-headed opposing door openings, narrowed from original size, with sheet iron doors on sliding runners opening onto slipway and to road.

  Description

  Pier, built c. 1870. Limestone superstructure with tooled limestone kerbing with modern concrete refurbishment to deck, protective stone wall to north side of structure, cut limestone steps descending to sea level and five tapered dome-headed limestone mooring bollards, evenly spaced. Modern concrete pier to south.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1900 with central porch to front, canted bay to side and single-bay two-storey return to rear with later single-bay two-storey wing to north-east and modern conservatory to north-west. Hipped slate roof with clayware ridge tiles, yellow brick chimneystacks on stretcher bond and replacement rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls, with smooth rendered block-and-start quoins and plinth course; smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls to porch. Square-headed window openings, paired to ground floor, with one-over-one and two-over-two timber sash windows. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door and glazed overlight. Four-bay two-storey annex with an external staircase to rear, with a hipped replacement slate roof and terracotta ridge tiles. Roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with one-over-one and six-over-six timber sash windows. Square-headed door opening with half-glazed timber door. Set within own grounds overlooking the sea to the south-east and bounded by a wall with smooth rendered gate piers with pyramidal coping with wrought-iron gates.
