• DG005-009 Megalithic structure
  Description

  This monument is named 'Standing Stone' on the original OS 6-inch map (1834) and 'Giant's Grave' on the 1848 edition. It consists of a low subrectangular mound measuring 5m N-S, 2m E-W and 0.5m high. At its southern end is an upright stone, and at the northern end is a partly buried, prostrate stone. The upright stone is 1m long, 0.6m thick and 1.6m high. The prostrate one measures at least 0.8m in maximum dimension. It is clear that the monument was in its present state in 1848 (OS Revision Name Book). It was then locally regarded as the burial place of 'some noted person'. According to the same account, some partly obliterated 'ornamental devices' were visible on the S face of the upright stone. It has not been possible to identify any trace of these. The original nature of this ancient feature is uncertain. The upright stone may be a standing stone, perhaps originally one of a pair, although it is conceivable that there was a more substantial megalithic structure here.   Description

  It was not possible to trace the several oval hut foundations, about 8ft by 5ft, of drystone construction surviving in height from 2ft to 4ft. One hut of similar construction was about 2 to 3 times larger. Local tradition believed some of these to have early ecclesiastical associations (M. R. Colhoun). Situated on rough rocky gorse-covered land. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.'   Description

  Double-arch bridge carrying road over the Culdaff River, built c. 1800, having large rubble stone cutwater (on semi-circular-plan) to the wide central pier to both elevations and with overflow arch to the north-east. Round-headed arches having dressed stone voussoirs with dressed keystone detail; squared rubble stone construction to arch barrel. Rubble stone construction to pier and abutments and to parapets. Random rubble stone parapet walls, randomly rendered in parts, with rendered coping over. Cut stone buttresses to south-west and north-east-banks or river. Tarmacadam deck. Rubble stone wing walls to ends of parapets with and stone stiles to north-east side of bridge to either parapet. Located to the south-west of the centre of Culdaff.
