• KE015-048 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Internal diameter 31m N-S Though marked on the 1841-42 OS map as a circular enclosure, it does not appear on the 1916 OS map. However, it is still traceable today. It has been slightly cut on its E side by a fieldbank running N-S. This boggy field is known locally as the fort field. What remains of the site today is a semi-circular area which is enclosed to the N, S and E by fieldbanks. A slight trace of an exterior fosse can be noticed to the NW through W to SW. The enclosing earthen bank is 1.2m high externally and .5m-.8m above the interior. Where visible, the fosse, which is wet, is 2.8m wide and .6m below the height of the surrounding land.   Description

  This circular enclosure is marked on the 1841-42 OS map. It was situated in the corner of a field and the S sector was cut slightly by a fieldbank running E-W. Only a tiny section of the S sector appears on 1916 edition map, and no visible trace remains today. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle.
