  Description

  Internal diameter 34m N-S, 34.6m E-W Blackpool fort. This univallate rath consists of a circular area enclosed by a well-defined bank and an exterior fosse can be noted for most of the site except to the NE through E to SE. The enclosing earthen bank rises to a maximum of 3.2m externally and 1.4m above the interior, and is on average 6.5m wide at the base. The exterior fosse is c 2m wide and .6m-l.6m deep.   Description

  Internal diameter 19m N-S, 19m E-W This small univallate cahir consists of a circular space enclosed by a well-defined wall. The enclosing wall rises to a maximum of 1.2m above the interior and 2m above the external ground level. Sections of the enclosing wall have been levelled by cattle, as there is a water trough in the centre of the fort. The interior is at a higher level than the surrounding land and is gently sloping S.   Internal diameter 32m N-S, 32.4m E-W This sub-circular univallate ringfort is enclosed by an earth and stone bank and traces of an exterior fosse can be noted to the W through N to E. The enclosing bank is very overgrown but well defined, and it rises to 2m-4.2m high externally and on average 2.2m internally. The interior is at a higher level than the surrounding land. In the N sector is a possible house-site (KE015-019001-) constructed of stone, measuring 6.9m N-S and 9m E-W internally. A lot of stones are visible in the interior.   Sub-circular univallate ringfort KE015-019---- is enclosed by an earth and stone bank and traces of an exterior fosse can be noted to the W through N to E. In the N sector is a possible house-site (KE015-019001-) constructed of stone, measuring 6.9m N-S and 9m E-W internally. A lot of stones are visible in the interior.   Description

  Internal diameter 33.4m N-S, 36.2m E-W This univallate rath is bounded to the N through E by a trackway; to the SE lies a dump, while immediately to the S lies a quarry. The rath consists of a sub-circular area enclosed by a well-defined earthen bank, 1.4m-2.4m high externally and .5m-1.9m above the interior. The interior is at a higher level than the surrounding land and access is gained by a c 4m wide gap on the W side. In the centre of the interior is an oblong mound, 4m x 1.8m internally and .6m high. On the exterior side of the rath to the SE and in the E sector of the dump is a possible entrance to a souterrain (KE015-027001-), which may be connected to the mound in the interior.   Description

  Univallate rath KE015-027 consists of a sub-circular area enclosed by a well-defined earthen bank, 1.4m-2.4m high externally and .5m-1.9m above the interior. In the centre of the interior is an oblong mound, 4m x 1.8m internally and .6m high. On the exterior side of the rath to the SE and in the E sector of the dump is a possible entrance to a souterrain (KE015-027001-), which may be connected to the mound in the interior. • KE015-028 Cist
  Description

  In 1985, in the course of building a wall, two stone-lined graves (KE015-028----, KE015-028001-) c. 1m apart were accidentally discovered in the front garden of a private house. A rescue excavation was undertaken by the Office of Public Works. This eastern grave, c. 45cm below ground level, consisted of a rectangular cist (L 2.05m; Wth 0.5m) lined by four and seven side stones on the N and S sides respectively with the remains of two capstones (T 0.35m) at the W and E ends. Oriented E-W, there was one upright closing the grave at each end. The grave contained an extended skeleton, lying on its back with the head to W.   Description

  In 1985, in the course of building a wall, two stone-lined graves (KE015-028----, KE015-028001-) c. 1m apart were accidentally discovered in the front garden of a private house. A rescue excavation was undertaken by the Office of Public Works. This western grave, c. 40-50cm below ground level, consisted of a rectangular cist (L 1.89m; Wth 0.55m) lined by five and four side stones on the N and S sides respectively with the remains of four capstones at the E end. Oriented E-W, there was one definite endstone at the E end. The skeleton(s) had been removed prior to investigation with small fragments of bone found in the remaining fill.   Description

  Very little remains of this once univallate rath. It is situated in a corner of a field and is cut on its E side by a fieldbank running N-S. The N sector has now been levelled and only survives as a slight rise. All that remains today is an earthen arc bank, which runs for 34m from W to S and rises to 1m high. On the exterior W side, a slight fosse can be noted for c20m and is 4m wide and .4m deep. In the interior towards the E side is an oblong mound, 4m x 1m internally.   Description

  This large bivallate rath does not appear on the 1841-42 OS map. However, it is marked on the 1916 edition and is situated SW of KE015-033----. A small stream would appear to flow through it in a NW-SE direction. This site also shows up quite clearly on the Geological Survey of Ireland's aerial photographs (1974), but it has since been levelled and only disturbances can now be noted in the field.   Description

  Internal diameter 29.2m N-S, 29.6m E-W This sub-circular univallate rath is situated at the bottom of a long, narrow pastoral field. It is touched to the N, W, S and SE by fieldbanks. The enclosing bank is constructed of earth and stone and is c 7m wide at the base. It rises to 3.4m high externally and 2.5m internally. The interior is at much the same level as the surrounding land and access is gained by a 8.4m wide entrance to the SE. In the N sector of the interior are the remains of souterrains (KE015-033001-): The most N one is open and drystone walling is evident, though this chamber has been filled with rubbish. In the NE corner of the chamber, a lintel stone can be seen. Three metres to the S of this chamber lies a second one; this, however, has collapsed, though a lot of stones are visible. • KE015-034 Fulacht fia
  Description

  This site, situated on the edge of a peat bog, is horseshoe-shaped and measures on average 23m x 20m x 1.2m in height. Half-way between the horns of the horseshoe was a well-defined hollow which measures 2m square. Excavation (Twohig, 1973) showed that the mound consisted of fire-shattered rock debris, intermingled with finely ground charcoal.   Description

  Internal diameter 34m N-S, 31m E-W This is a sub-circular univallate cahir. The inner circular area is enclosed by a well-defined stone wall and exterior fosse. The wall is on average 8m wide at the base; it rises to 1.2m-2.6m above the interior and 2.4m-4.2m above the external fosse. The fosse, well defined and U-shaped in plan, is now barely distinguishable to the S; elsewhere it is c 2.6m wide and 1m deep. The above description is derived from C.
