KE043-224 Historic town
Description
Situated on the S side of the peninsula, Dingle stands at the head of a large, natural harbour, protected from the prevailing winds by a ridge of high land running W-E at the mouth of the bay. The town is built on elevated ground which slopes E to a small river and S to the harbour and it is bounded on the landward side by a crescent of ridges and rising mountains. Even today, Dingle is relatively isolated from major population centres and it is undoubtedly to its possession of a sheltered harbour that the town owes its prosperity in bygone days. (See KE043-224001- to KE043-224039- for individual monuments within the town). The historic town of Dingle was described in the Urban Survey of Kerry as follows; ‘Dingle is a small coastal town located at the junction off a small valley with Dingle harbour on the south side of the mountainous Dingle peninsula. The placename is a corruption of 'An Daingean', the fort or stronghold, but the origin of this name is unclear. There is also a great deal of uncertainty over the fuller form, now generally rendered 'Daingean Ui Chuis', after references in AFM sub anno 1579 and 1580. O'Donovan (1983, 113) translated this as “the fastness of O'Cuis or O'Hussey". The Hussey family were connected with the town in the sixteenth century ( Hogan 1878, 192 fn. h, 282) but the earliest contemporary record of the extended name form occurs in 1322 as "Dengenyhonysh" which predates the known Hussey connection (PRO 1910, 160). The Ui Cuis family are otherwise unknown. There is no evidence of any significant pre-Norman settlement at Dingle and it seems likely that the town was an Anglo-Norman foundation on virgin ground. The main reason for the town’s existence was its function as a sea-port but it was also an administrative centre. Nonetheless its origins are obscure. It appears in the early fourteenth century as the manorial centre of the cantred of 'Osurres' (Aes Irruis), which was held by Thomas de Clare, and therefore it may be assumed that it was included in the grant of the cantred of ‘Ossurys’ to Robert son of Geoffrey de Marisco c. 1216 (Orpen 1911-20, iii, 133; Otway Ruthven 1968, 87). Robert's daughter, Christiania, sold the cantred to Sir Maurice FitzMaurice later in the thirteenth century (Brooks 1931-2 65, n. 104). In 1289-90 Sir Maurice FitzMaurice demised the manor of Killorglin to Thomas de Clare (Sweetman 1875-86, iii, no. 1028) and it may be assumed that Dingle came into their hands around the same time. In 1322 an inquisition noted that Thomas de Clare had his capital messuage of the cantred of “Osurres" as well as courts of free tenants and of the hundred at ‘Dengenyhonysh’ (PRO 1910, 160). Dingle is not mentioned, however, in the earlier documents relating to Ossurys which may perhaps indicate that it as not yet in existence. It is first mentioned in customs returns of 1278-9 (Sweetman 1875-86, iv, 415), which is clear evidence that the port was functioning. In 1299 the villata, or men of the vill of ‘Dengen' were fined for the escape of Walter Laundrey (Sweetman 1875-86 i PP. 294, 314) which suggests the existence by that time of a structured community. It is likely that Dingle's main function at this period was as a port. In 1278-9 Perceval of Lucca and his associates accounted for 12 new custom received on the king' s behalf from merchants leaving the port of Dingle (Sweetman 1875-86 ii, P.415). Otway-Ruthven (1968, 123) and Graham (1977, 41) point out that the ports of Dingle and Tralee were important enough in the late thirteenth and fourteenth centuries to be centres in which customs were collected and although probably never more than a minor port, Dingle was apparently engaged in steady trade during this Period. In 1316 Dingle was burned by Diarmait MacCarthaig, chief of Desmumu (AI) and the effects of this were noted in the 1322 inquisition which described de Clare's capital messuage as unbuilt and stated that many free tenants had withdrawn because of the war (PRO 1910, 160). The Mac Carthaig again raided Corca Dhuibhne in 1398 and plundered it beyond the town of Dingle and the country from that on (Ó hInnse 1947,111) although it is not clear if the town itself was burned on this occasion or not. In spite of these unsettled conditions, however Dingle survived and continued both in its Commercial and administrative functions. Royal Customs officials were assigned there in 1334 and 1395 while in 1461 it was proposed to make a grant to William, Lord de Bary, from the customs and cocket of Dingle (44 RDKPRI, 51-2; Tresham 1828, 52 no 44 p269 no 68). In 1485 there is a record of the seneschal of the liberty of Kerry holding assizes at Dingle (Brewer and Bullen 1871, 377). During the late sixteenth century Dingle became quite closely involved in political developments in Kerry because of its strategic importance. In 1569 it attracted government interest when it was proposed to wall the town in order to curb the power of the earl of Desmond and of Mac Carthaig (Brewer and Bullen 1867, 396). In 1570 Dingle was apparently occupied for a time by a French force during the rebellion of James FitzMaurice (Hamilton 1860, 435) and in 1571 Sir John Perrot, president of Munster, noted "six of James FitzMaurices men killed at the Dingle when he went there to take the great ordnance" (Hamilton 1860, 457). In his renewed campaign of 1579, FitzMaurice landed at Dingle with six Spanish ships and subsequently burned the town (Hamilton 1867 173-4). Contemporary reports described Dingle in the aftermath as whol1y sacked", "razed" and "broken” (Hamilton 1867,197,216; Brewer and Bullen 1868, 214). In 1580 Sir William Pelham noted that Dingle had been largely abandoned by its inhabitants and urged Sir William Winter to encourage them especially the fishermen and merchants, to return to the town (Brewer and Bullen 1868, 254). At the end of that year, after the massacre of Dún an Óir, there were 450 English soldiers in Dingle (Hamilton 1867, 273) and by 1582 Sir Henry Wallop the Vice Treasurer noted that “Dingle is now inhabited and should be entered in the schedule concerning imposts on wine (Hamilton 1867, 387). By this date a permanent ward of thirty soldiers was stationed there (Curtis1933-43, 322; Hamilton 1867, 405). Later that year, however, Dingle was besieged by the earl of Desmond and the baron of Lixnaw, but they were forced to lift the siege apparently after a sally by the soldiers and townsmen, with Sir Thomas Norrey's marching to the town’s relief (Hamilton 1867, 419). An English traveller’s account of 1589, apparently referring to the 1582 siege, noted that “the castle and all the houses in the Towne, save four, were won, burnt, and ruinated by the Erle of Desmond. These foure houses fortified themselves against him and withstood him and all his power perforce, so as he could not winne them” (Hitchcock 1852-3,140). The defeat and death of the earl of Desmond in 1583 marked a turning point in Dingle's history with the establishment of English control there. This was reflected in a proposal of 1585 to grant a charter of incorporation to the town, in order to promote the restoration of their ruinous and decayed estate, through the late rebellion there" (Morrin 1862, 105 15 RDKPRI, 144-5 no. 4816). It seems, however, that the charter was not actually granted until 1606 (Hitchcock 1852-3 134; Cusack 1871 appendix v; Weinbaum 1943, 204). References to the portreeve or provost of Dingle in 1579 and 1584, however, indicate that the town was incorporated before the 1585 Proposal (Hamilton 1867, 173; PRO 1881, 1). Further disruption occurred in 1598 when James FitzThomas, the 'sugan' earl of Desmond, landed at Dingle with 2000 Spaniards and the town surrendered to him (Atkinson 1895, 487, 400). Description
Though Dingle appears to have been an important centre of trade by 1257 (McKenna 1979, 16), the first official reference to the walling of the town is not until over 300 years later. In 1569 a request 'to have allowance of 1,000 pounds for the walling of the town of Dinglecoche in Kirreye which they are suitors of was sent to Elizabeth (Cal Car Mss 1569, 396). However it was not until 1585, 2 years after the end of the Desmond Rebellion, that a decree approving a murage grant to the town was issued (CPR Eliz. 1585, 105). The decree incorporated Dingle giving it 'such reasonable liberties as Drogheda hath' and the 'sum of 300 pounds in money towards the charge of walling their town with stone, three quarters of a mile compasse'. It seems likely however that the town had been previously fortified as the walls were recorded as only partially preserved in 1589. At that time the town was described as having had 'gates (as it seemeth) in times past at either end to open and shut as a town of war' (McKenna 1979, 22). Though much decayed by 1756 (Smith, 177), traces of very thick walling, bonded with a clay mortar, were still visible in 1853 near the N end of the town (Hitchcock 1854, 135), and the line of the W curtain was indicated on the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS map. There are no visible remains of any fortifications in the modern town but the linear street plan and burgage plots of its medieval predecessor are evident. Rectangular in plan, the walled town enclosed an area of c. 15 acres with suburbs in Goat Street and John Street, and a linear market in Main Street (Bradley 1976, 124). A built-up archway observed by McKenna in a garden wall at the rear of Dyke Gate Lane may have formerly provided access to the market area. Dingle town defences described by Thomas (1992, 68-70) as follows; ‘small fragments of town wall to SW of Main St. (noted by Bradley 1985 app. as 'possible' town wall). Possible name survival—Dyke Gate Lane - MAPS OS 1846 — SW line of town wall marked. WRITTEN DESCRIPTIONS 1587: 'commodious harbour, also a walled town and corporation' (Camden, 1753 ed l). 1589: Dingle—town wall (Anon, ed Hogan 1878, 189). 1599: 'Dinglenacush is chief town in all that part of Ireland, it consisteth of but one main street, from whence some smaller do proceed on either side. It hath had gates (as it seemeth) in times past at either end to open and shut as a town of war and a castle also. The houses are very strongly built with thick stone walls and narrow windows like unto castles ……There remaineth yet a thick stone wall that passeth overthwart the midst of the street which was a part of their fortification The town is now again [after Desmond attack] somewhat repaired, but in effect there remain but the ruins of the former town' (E. Wright — Hitchcock 140). 1756: 'Dingle is only walled town but now very inconsiderable town walls made of clay mortar, because lime scarce, and much decayed fort at entrance to harbour now demolished' (Smith 73, 177). 1852: 'traces of town's walls remain, especially near the Grove on N side' (Hitchcock 135). - PROPERTY AND TOWN RECORDS: no evidence. MURAGE: a single murage grant is known, dated 1585, and made at the request of the inhabitants who retailed their sufferings resulting from the Desmond wars. The Queen incorporated the town as 'fully as Drogheda' and granted, 'for a stone wall three-quarters of a mile [1,188m] in compass', as proposed €300, to be acquired at the rate of €20 p.a. from the import of wines there (CPCR II 5). This may be seen as the culmination of a number of reports/proposals on Dingle and the area generally — in 1569 a request for 'for the walling in of the town of Dinglecoche' was made in a note on the presidency of Munster (CCP 1 266); in 1580 Pelham recommended that the town of Dingle should be fortified to withstand a possible Spanish landing (CCP 11 306). By 1584 Dingle was on a list of 7 walled towns proposed by the Lord Deputy which included the medieval town of Athlone as well as more recent sites such as Newry (CSPI 533); and in 1589 Dingle was included in a list of 'walled towns' in Munster which required garrisons (CSPI 80). Yet, less than 10 years later it was described as 'not being walled or otherwise defensible' and so it had been surrendered by the townsmen (Norreys to Privy Council, CSPI 1599, 15). This may imply that the walling progressed slowly or inadequately, or even that later writers were misled by the 1585 charter into locating a wall that never actually materialised. This latter seems unlikely given Smith's description of the structure, and the local tradition and/or knowledge which led the Ordnance Surveyors to mark it on the first 6-inch map. Other charters: incorporated in 1585, in a warrant but not activated until c. 1608. No murage or other charters are known for the medieval period. There is a 1299 reference to the 'men of the vill of Dengen' in Kerry (CDI IV 658). The customs returns point to the considerable importance of the port then and even into the 16th century (Orpen III 146; Lydon 1973, 12; NHI 1984 111 12). Circuit details PERIOD: Late Tudor—on murage and other evidence. AREA: 4—5/8 ha. (values speculative). PERIMETER: 875m (incl. 200m along river)/1 175m (1 188m—1585 ref.). SHAPE: square/rectangular. STRUCTURE: stone—clay mortar. GATES: total—2/3. N + S — main gates on single street. W—probable, to harbour— Dyke. TOWERS: unknown but possibly 3—4 at corners (castle at one corner). FOSSE: unknown but to E a stream and to S dyke, possibly in association with an embankment against the sea. FORT: only a mid-17th century fort known, located away from the town on the headland to the SE (Smith's co. map). OTHER SITE STRUCTURES: Dingle's raison d'etre was its natural harbour, which made it for long the main port of Kerry despite its lack of centrality as far as the rest of the county was concerned; the import of essentials or wine and luxuries for the more settled, lowland areas of N Kerry and the export of wool from the highlands of central Kerry, the Dingle and other peninsulas, and of fish from the sheltered and extensive bay and nearby sea were the main commodities. The small stream provided an area for milling as well as a fosse, but bridging it would not have been a decisive locating factor. There is a reference to a castle, in addition to gates, but its site is unknown and not necessarily that marked so on the OS map, which may be part of the N gate; the castle of 1580 is said to have been at the rear of the market house and used as a prison in 1815 (Hitchcock 1855). There is no obvious market place but the mam street widens slightly in its N half. The parish church is just off the main street. There are no references to religious houses but the street names towards the harbour — Grey Lane and Holy Ground — are at least suggestive of a Franciscan house and there is a well to E of the stream dedicated to St. John. Two separate suburbs existed by 1846, Upper and Lower colony, to SE beyond the stream and to W alongside the quay resp. Discussion: Little is known of Dingle before the late 16th century, although it appears intermittently in the customs returns of the later 13th and 14th centuries. It may indeed have been a walled town at that time—it would have been as likely a candidate as its nearest neighbour, Tralee, which got a murage grant in 1286, along with the old Kerry episcopal centre of Ardfert nearby. But there are no medieval murage records and little is known even of the Tudor walled area. The evidence seems sufficient to confirm that a town wall was built but a doubt must remain, given the Norrey's description of 1599. However, its wording may be an exaggeration or the result of mis-information. It is contradicted by Wright’s contemporary description. Archaeological investigation of the possible surviving town wall remains would probably resolve the issue and might even show that the Tudor wall rested largely on an earlier medieval circui
KE043-224002 Castle - tower house
Description
The site of a castle is indicated on the OS 6-inch map (1st ed.) at the junction of Green St and Main St where Siopa an Chúinne (Corner Shop) now stands today. This may be the castle reputedly built by Peter Rice. There is a datestone of 1586 (KE043-224030-) in the wall of the adjoining house but another datestone (KE043-224031-) with the inscription RICE ANNO 1563 which was recorded by Smith (1756, 177) is not now visible. Rice House described in the Urban Survey of Kerry (Bradley 1987, 62) as follows; 'Smith (1756, 177) states that he saw a building with "an inscription, signifying that the house was built by one RICE, anno 1563 and on a stone beneath two roses, are carved these words, AT THE ROSE IS THE BEST WINE". This may have been located at the junction of Green St. and Main St. where the O. S. maps show a “castle" site. The present building on this corner is modern. A rectangular stone with the date 1586 is inserted at second floor level into the second house to the west of this site, in Green Street. The upper part of the stone is roughly dressed, indicating that it is not in its original position (Cuppage 1986, 380). The above description is derived from J. Description
The sale of a castle by the Knight of Kerry to Richard Trant in 1565 is recorded in contemporary documents (Cuppage 1986, 380). The castle known as Caisleán na bhFiach was situated at the N end of Main St, on the site of the 19th century Temperance Hall now the local library, but nothing is known of its history. Trant Castle described in the Urban Survey of Kerry (Bradley 1987, 64) as follows; 'In 1565 a castle in Dingle was sold to Richard Trant by the knight of Kerry (Cuppage 1986, 380). Known as Cais lean na bhFiach it stood at the north end of Main Street on the site occupied by the nineteenth century Temperance Hall, now housing the local library (Cuppage 1986, 380). KE043-224004 Castle - tower house
Description
A castle built by the Husseys was granted to the Earl of Ormond in the confiscations which followed the Desmond Rebellion (Smith 1756, 177). It was subsequently purchased by the Knight of Kerry and later, known as the Market House, it became the official residence of the Sovereign of Dingle (McKenna 1979, 24). The vaults were used as the town jail until 1815 (O'Sullivan 1931, 131). A pointed doorway, probably of medieval origin, was preserved in the remains of a building on the site in 1853 (Hitchcock 1855, 355). A lintelled passageway leading to a chamber, c. 3 x 1m, uncovered in an adjacent garden c. 1952, may also have been associated with this castle (OPW). The site lies at the rear of a business premises on Main Street; inserted in the wall of an adjacent outbuilding is a carved stone decorated with a 16th century paired vine motif with interlaced stem. Hussey House described in the Urban Survey of Kerry (Bradley 1987, 63-4) as follows; 'Another important building that was mentioned in Dingle's proposed charter of 1585 which granted the corporation a house in the town forfeited by John Hussey "to make of the same a gaol and a common Court-house (Morrin 1862, 105). Smith (1756, 176) claimed that the building was granted on its forfeiture to the earl of Ormond and later bought by the Knight of Kerry; it was functioning in 1756 as the town gaol. O'Donovan (1983, 115) could find no trace of this gaol in 1841 but Hitchcock (1854-5, 355) supplies a description of the building. It was located to the rear of the then market-house and it still displayed "a low dark, doorway, and a small cut stone and grated window", while apparently built into modern walls were "a cut stone doorway the shape being something between semi-circular and pointed, but approaching more to the latter", and a stone with "a portion of some raised carving, resembling (as well as I could see it a tree". It was located on the south side of Main St., on the site of the present P. T. Fitzgerald's Supermarket. Nothing remains of the pointed door, linteled passage, or room, which probably formed part of a back house, or middle-house, in the original complex. The decorated stone (KE043-224032-) survives, however, embedded at second floor level in the east facing wall of a building at the rear of the supermarket. KE043-224005 Church
Description
Situated on the E side of Main Street within the medieval walled town is the site of the 13th century parish church (Cal Docs Ire, V, 297) which was appropriated to the Augustinian priory of St. Mary's Killagh, near Castlemaine. The church was probably refurbished or rebuilt in the 15th/16th century, reputedly under Spanish patronage (Smith 1756, 177). According to McKenna (1979, 48), Dingle was one of the chief embarkation points for the great medieval pilgrimage to the shrine of St. James at Compostela and it is probably no coincidence then that the church was dedicated to St. James. By 1756, only a small section of the church was kept in repair, the remainder having gone to ruin (Smith, 177). In the graveyard, S of the church, many carved fragments of medieval date have been re-used as gravemarkers. These include 3 large sandstone dripstones and sections of a weathered eaves coping. Also carved from sandstone is section of a moulded arch with 3 receding chamfers, which probably formed part of a round-headed doorway. A 2nd arch fragment has a broad chamfered arris. Near the SW corner of the graveyard is section of a door jamb of 2 chamfered orders. The fragment is carved from limestone and has 16th century punch dressing on the reveal. Other chamfered blocks probably also date to the same period. The present Church of Ireland church was built on the site in 1807 and there are no visible remains of any earlier structure. A plain octagonal stone font which now stands in the modern edifice is traditionally associated with the medieval church. In the graveyard E of the church are 3 medieval tomb slabs; a 4th undated example may also belong to this period: (1) The FitzGerald Slab 1504: This trapezoidal tomb slab, carved from sandstone, is now broken into 2 sections. The stone bears 3 shields, the upper containing the arms of the Munster FitzGeralds: Ermine, a Saltire Gules, with a Boar and a Griffin for supporters. The 2nd shield contains a heart with the inscription HM.KT.H. and the lower shield bears a saltire between 3 objects resembling eagles heads (FitzGerald 1911, 391). At the narrow end of the slab is an incised Latin cross with the sacred monogram, INRI, above it and the inscription B.S.E.C.(S)A INDEOAOA beneath it. A marginal inscription on the sides of the stone reads: TRINITAS:INDIVIDUA.SALVA:NOS/.O.PATER. M.N.P.P.ET.I.N.AM.AMEN.1504.BEO.B.GAR/ DIE.LE.G. The final part of the inscription, after the date, is considered to be contracted Irish, meaning 'God be with Gearoid. May the FitzGeralds flourish' (McKenna 1979, 32). (2) The Rice Slab 1622: The surface of this trapezoidal tomb slab is now shattered and the inscription largely illegible. It is carved with a shield bearing arms, quarterly party per pale, engrailed in the 2nd and 3rd a lion rampant. The inscription was read by Smith (1756, 178-9) as: STEPHEN RICE LIES HERE, LATE KNIGHT OF PARLIAMENT, AN HAPPY LIFE/FULL FOURSCORE YEARS FULL VIRTUOUSLY HE SPENT. HIS LOYAL/ WIFE ELLEN TRANT, WHO DIED FIVE YEARS BEFORE HIM LIES HERE/ALSO. LORD GRANT THEM LIFE FOR EVER MORE/MDCXX11/HUIC FUCURRE TUIS VOTIS PIA MATER JESU/INSUPER ADDE TUAS LECTOR AMICE PRECES. (3) The Mullins Slab 1695: This slab now stands erect on the E side of the Lord Ventry sepulchral tomb. Trapezoidal in shape it bears the clearly legible inscription: HERE LYETH THE/BODY OF: FREDER/ICK MULLINS:SON/ AND:HEIRE: OF/FREDERICK. MUL/LINS: OF BURN/HAM: ESQUIR:W/HO:DECEASED/THE:22:DAY:OF/OCTOBER:AN/NO:DOM:1695/AND:THE:31/OF:HIS AGE. (4) This wedge-shaped slab is formed of 2 sections neatly jointed together. The upper surface of the stone is decorated with a raised rectangular pattern embodying a swastika motif and an interlaced curvilinear design. The monument is well preserved but appears to bear no dedication. In the rear garden of a house in Main Street are 3 carved stones, discovered during the construction of an outbuilding in the late 19th century: (1) An irregularly-shaped limestone slab, 1.37m long x .9m high and .09m thick, bordered on its upper edges by cable work in relief. A central panel on the face of the stone contains a design resembling lierne vaulting, executed in false relief. The slab undoubtedly formed section of a sepulchural monument; a tomb surround at Fertagh Church, Co. Kilkenny, which bears similar decoration, has been dated to the period 1510-1540 (Hunt 1974, 1, 167 and 2, pl.276). (2) Two fragments of a chamfered limestone arch, combined span 1.15m; a 3rd fragment discovered simultaneously is now missing (Buckley 1916-18, 261). The stones probably formed section of a round-headed doorway of medieval date. See attached photograph taken from Dunne 2019, 7. The above description is derived from J. KE043-224006 Graveyard
Description
St. James church and graveyard in Dingle described by Cuppage (1986, 380-83, no. 1011) as follows; 'Situated on the E side of Main Street within the medieval walled town is the site of the 13th century parish church [KE043-224005-] (Cal Docs Ire, V, 297) which was appropriated to the Augustinian priory of St. Mary's Killagh, near Castlemaine. The church was probably refurbished or rebuilt in the 15th/16th century, reputedly under Spanish patronage (Smith 1756, 177). According to McKenna (1979, 48), Dingle was one of the chief embarkation points for the great medieval pilgrimage to the shrine of St. James at Compostela and it is probably no coincidence then that the church was dedicated to St. James. By 1756, only a small section of the church was kept in repair, the remainder having gone to ruin (Smith, 177). In the graveyard, S of the church, many carved fragments of medieval date have been re-used as gravemarkers. These include 3 large sandstone dripstones and sections of a weathered eaves coping. Also carved from sandstone is section of a moulded arch with 3 receding chamfers, which probably formed part of a round-headed doorway. A 2nd arch fragment has a broad chamfered arris. Near the SW corner of the graveyard is section of a door jamb of 2 chamfered orders. The fragment is carved from limestone and has 16th century punch dressing on the reveal. Other chamfered blocks probably also date to the same period. The present Church of Ireland church was built on the site in 1807 and there are no visible remains of any earlier structure'. Church and graveyard described by Dunne (2011, 13) as follows; 'The Church and Graveyard of St. James is situated on the east side of Main Street (previously Middle Street), and encompasses over 2 acres of ground. There are no relict above ground remains of the medieval church although some of the original masonry, including a number of chamfered quoins, were reused to build the current early 19th century edifice. In the course of this survey seventy two medieval architectural fragments have also been reused as grave markers and also to construct above ground tombs. Prior to this survey twelve were known. The architectural fragments are mostly of local sandstone and include several flags from the eaves coping that were used to throw off the water from the side walls as well as several water spouts or dripstones . The flags from the eaves coping were much sought after as grave markers as the cross shaped slots cut into them to direct the water off the church now appeared as ready carved crosses. Several fragments of window masonry were also recovered including mullions, tracery from possibly a cusped ogee head and a twin light sill built into a tomb. A number of the limestone architectural fragments are most likely later, dating to the 15th century. Access into the graveyard is via a pair of wrought iron gates that are set between a pair of square ashlar pillars in general good order. The gates themselves are in good repair and recently painted. No separate pedestrian stile is provided for, nor is there any space for it. The gravelled driveway rises upslope between the neighbouring pub gables, the southern one of which is emblazoned with a huge inappropriate and kitsch shamrock. The accessway extends outwards to maximum width generally corresponding to the width of the church. The church is eccentrically situated on level ground on the north side of the graveyard and more or less beside a high boundary wall. The graveyard extending for almost 2 acres slopes to the south where it can be steep in places but slopes more gently to the east. A raised stone fronted area, that had been until recently completely overgrown, runs parallel to the north or left side of the accessway. The graveyard is bounded along its northern limits by a high rubble stone wall that most likely corresponds to the line of the original medieval town wall. The east boundary consists of a very overgrown rubble built wall varying in height and much cast down, breached and tumbled here and there and damaged by mature trees. The southern boundary wall of rubble sandstone construction is also much overgrown and dilapidated in places due to mature trees and scrub. It varies in height from a reduced low. level of 0.6m to 1.6m maximum with evidence of soldier capping surviving here and there. The west boundary of the graveyard corresponds to the rear of the buildings on the east side of Main Street extending from Ashe’s Pub at the SW to the Dingle Pub at the NW beside the entrance gate. Most of the original rubble stone wall along this boundary has been removed in the recent past and there appears to some evidence of possible encroachment by modern development insensitive extensions to the rear of these buildings. A small section of in situ walling survives mid-way along the boundary otherwise and in general there is no separation between the graveyard and Ashes Pub and the Dingle Pub. There are thirty-eight (38) tombs with names and inscriptions on them. The majority of them are simple rectangular box forms while others are similar haunched types. Forty-two (42) unnamed tombs were recorded. There are a massive one hundred and thirty nine (139) exposed lintelled graves in St. James’s Graveyard in Dingle. Lintelled graves, as the name suggest, comprise earth dug graves often lined or revetted with rubble sandstone that were sometimes rendered and covered over with local sandstone lintels. There were forty-seven named headstones (HNs) recorded at St. James’s Graveyard, of which only twelve have formal associated grave settings. The earliest recorded dates are 1700, inscribed with the initials M.M while the 1747 headstone is in memory of Rev. N. Moriarty. The most recent date is 1947 in memory of John O’Flaherty. Seventeen rectangular grave slabs, GRVS, defining burial areas were recorded. Six of the slabs have legible inscriptions while two others are illegible. The remaining nine are either partially exposed or have no inscriptions and information is therefore masked and unknown. The earliest slab dates to 1716 in memory of B. Stilwell. The earliest slab is known as the FitzGerald slab (MGRVS3) and dates to 1504. This slab has been broken in two parts since at least 1911 when it was first published (Fitzgerald 1911). The uninscribed decorated medieval slab, MGRVS2, lies on a low overgrown rectangular tomb, beside LG59. The slab is divided into two fields with a swastika motif carved in relief on the west field and an interlace motif on the east field. A corner of the swastika end has disappeared since it was recorded by Bradley in 1984. The inscribed and decorated MGRVS4 slab from 1622, known as the Rice Slab, was completely concealed and difficult to find in the course of this survey. It is in a shattered state with vegetation including ivy and tri-corn leek growing through it. Furthermore, it is a very low lying slab near another broken named tomb, TN26, as well as TN24 and TWN 34, and underneath the boughs of a very large mature tree that effectively inhibited quality photography. The east end of the slab contains the Rice-Trant heraldic shield while an elaborate inscription extends across the entirety of the slab and around the shield. The fourth slab, MGRVS 1, is vertically set in the east gable of the Ventry-Mullins mausoleum /tomb, TN11. This slab dates to 1695 and is more or less entirely inscribed across its face apart from a small panel at its base. A tiny heart pierced with two arrows is also carved on the upper right hand side. Seventy two medieval architectural fragments were recorded in the course of this survey of which approximately sixty were previously unrecorded. The fragments are dispersed around the graveyard although there is a couple of concentrations at the southern limits of the graveyard. Description
One of three medieval / post-medieval memorials in the graveyard to the E of the church (KE043-224005-). This record is for the FitzGerald slab which is dated 1504. 16th century chest-tomb described by Bradley (1987, 69-70) as follows; 'Tapering sandstone slab lying S.E of the church, now broken into two sections. Decorated with three heraldic shields, the upper containing the arms of the Munster FitzGeralds The second shield contains a heart with the inscription: HM. KT. H, and the lower shield bears a saltire between three objects resembling eagle' s heads. At the narrow end is an incised Latin cross with the letters INRI above it, and the inscription B. S. E. C. ( S)A INDEOAOA beneath it. Marginal inscription: TRINITAS: INDIVIDVAS:SALVA:NOS/ O:PATER:M:N.P.ET.I.AM.AMEN 1504. BEO.B. GAR/ DIE.LE.G/ and separate from the main inscription, the letters EAT. S/ and S.L. The meaning of the inscription is obscure. Description
One of three medieval / post-medieval memorials in the graveyard to the E of the church (KE043-224005-). This record is for the Rice slab which is dated 1629. The Rice graveslab dated 1629 recorded by Fitzgerald (1911, 344-6) as follows; 'The Rice Slab, 1629. This slab lies almost level with the ground in the eastern portion of the burial-ground. It is in a fractured condition, but has been cemented together, not quite line for line. The lettering is in raised Roman capitals ; the first ten lines are in English, and the remaining eight in Latin. The inscription (full .of errors), taken from Smith's ''History of the County Kerry," is given on p. 401, Vol. I of the Journal, where the date 1629 is given as 1622, and the first half of the Latin portion of the inscription is omitted altogether. At the top of the slab is a coat-of-arms—Rice impaling Trant.' The inscription is in verse, and runs thus'": Stephen Rice, Esquier, lies here, Late Knight of Parliament, A happy lif for four score yeare, Full virtueously he spent. His loyall wif Ellin Trant, Who died five yeares before, Lies here also; Lord Jesus grant Them lif for evermore. The Latin portion of the inscription, according to Mr. J. R. Garstin, is in hexameters and pentameters; the notes he has kindly supplied on it are given further on. This portion of the inscription is evidently in Latin verse, consisting of two hexameters and two pentameters, though not written in four lines. The commencement is very puzzling, only the first word being clear, namely, the Christian name " Stephanus." Next comes a word which presumably is the Latin equivalent for the surname Rice, as found in the English portion, as given above. It must be a three-foot word. Then come letters ac e tro apparently, but not making sense. Could they be mistakes for Antiquo? That, though not scanning well, would make sense with the four words which come next. What follows them is puzzling. No suitable Latin word beginning with Ast (which itself equals "but") is to be found. If one word, it should be of four feet, like " astruvms," an imaginary word. What follows is clear. More light is needed to clear up this inscription.' Translation. 'It is impossible to give the English in full until the Latin is determined, but the sense is somewhat as follows 'Stephen [Rice] the senior of an ancient (?) race. It is fame will be enduring. Help him with your prayers Holy Mother and Jesus. Moreover, friendly reader, add your prayers'. 17th century graveslab described by Bradley (1987, 70) as follows; 'Stephen Rice and Ellen Trant. 1629. About, 14m SE of the SE corner of the church. In very poor condition. Trapezoidal . Decorated heraldic shield showing Rice, and Trant impaled. The inscription is now almost illegible: STEP[HEN] RICE: ESQUIER: LI/ES H[ER]E LATE KNIG[HT] OF / [PA]R[LIAM]ENT A HAPPY LIF/ [FOR FOUR] SCORE [YE]ARE/ [FULL VIRTU]OUSLY [HE] SPENT/HIS LOYAL WID ELLIN/ TRANT, WHO DIED FIV/ YEARES BEFORE LIES HERE/ ALLSO LORD IESUS GR/ANT THEM LIF FOR EVERMORE/ MDCXXII. STE[PH]ANVS ECC 8V9 AC/.TR. DE STEMM[AT]E NATV/ MAXIMVS AST..VIVS/FAMA PERENNSI ERIT/HUIC SVCCVRRE TVIS VO/TIS PIA MA[TER ET] JESU:/ INSVPER ADDE TVAS/ LECTOR AMICE PRECES....AD, SANGV/INEM OBIIT I FEB: 1629 It is difficult to translate the Latin inscription because so many letters are unclear but its general tenor is that Stephen Rice was an upright (?astantivus) ember of his race, and that his fame will. endure. KE043-224 Historic town
Description
Situated on the S side of the peninsula, Dingle stands at the head of a large, natural harbour, protected from the prevailing winds by a ridge of high land running W-E at the mouth of the bay. The town is built on elevated ground which slopes E to a small river and S to the harbour and it is bounded on the landward side by a crescent of ridges and rising mountains. Even today, Dingle is relatively isolated from major population centres and it is undoubtedly to its possession of a sheltered harbour that the town owes its prosperity in bygone days. (See KE043-224001- to KE043-224039- for individual monuments within the town). The historic town of Dingle was described in the Urban Survey of Kerry as follows; ‘Dingle is a small coastal town located at the junction off a small valley with Dingle harbour on the south side of the mountainous Dingle peninsula. The placename is a corruption of 'An Daingean', the fort or stronghold, but the origin of this name is unclear. There is also a great deal of uncertainty over the fuller form, now generally rendered 'Daingean Ui Chuis', after references in AFM sub anno 1579 and 1580. O'Donovan (1983, 113) translated this as “the fastness of O'Cuis or O'Hussey". The Hussey family were connected with the town in the sixteenth century ( Hogan 1878, 192 fn. h, 282) but the earliest contemporary record of the extended name form occurs in 1322 as "Dengenyhonysh" which predates the known Hussey connection (PRO 1910, 160). The Ui Cuis family are otherwise unknown. There is no evidence of any significant pre-Norman settlement at Dingle and it seems likely that the town was an Anglo-Norman foundation on virgin ground. The main reason for the town’s existence was its function as a sea-port but it was also an administrative centre. Nonetheless its origins are obscure. It appears in the early fourteenth century as the manorial centre of the cantred of 'Osurres' (Aes Irruis), which was held by Thomas de Clare, and therefore it may be assumed that it was included in the grant of the cantred of ‘Ossurys’ to Robert son of Geoffrey de Marisco c. 1216 (Orpen 1911-20, iii, 133; Otway Ruthven 1968, 87). Robert's daughter, Christiania, sold the cantred to Sir Maurice FitzMaurice later in the thirteenth century (Brooks 1931-2 65, n. 104). In 1289-90 Sir Maurice FitzMaurice demised the manor of Killorglin to Thomas de Clare (Sweetman 1875-86, iii, no. 1028) and it may be assumed that Dingle came into their hands around the same time. In 1322 an inquisition noted that Thomas de Clare had his capital messuage of the cantred of “Osurres" as well as courts of free tenants and of the hundred at ‘Dengenyhonysh’ (PRO 1910, 160). Dingle is not mentioned, however, in the earlier documents relating to Ossurys which may perhaps indicate that it as not yet in existence. It is first mentioned in customs returns of 1278-9 (Sweetman 1875-86, iv, 415), which is clear evidence that the port was functioning. In 1299 the villata, or men of the vill of ‘Dengen' were fined for the escape of Walter Laundrey (Sweetman 1875-86 i PP. 294, 314) which suggests the existence by that time of a structured community. It is likely that Dingle's main function at this period was as a port. In 1278-9 Perceval of Lucca and his associates accounted for 12 new custom received on the king' s behalf from merchants leaving the port of Dingle (Sweetman 1875-86 ii, P.415). Otway-Ruthven (1968, 123) and Graham (1977, 41) point out that the ports of Dingle and Tralee were important enough in the late thirteenth and fourteenth centuries to be centres in which customs were collected and although probably never more than a minor port, Dingle was apparently engaged in steady trade during this Period. In 1316 Dingle was burned by Diarmait MacCarthaig, chief of Desmumu (AI) and the effects of this were noted in the 1322 inquisition which described de Clare's capital messuage as unbuilt and stated that many free tenants had withdrawn because of the war (PRO 1910, 160). The Mac Carthaig again raided Corca Dhuibhne in 1398 and plundered it beyond the town of Dingle and the country from that on (Ó hInnse 1947,111) although it is not clear if the town itself was burned on this occasion or not. In spite of these unsettled conditions, however Dingle survived and continued both in its Commercial and administrative functions. Royal Customs officials were assigned there in 1334 and 1395 while in 1461 it was proposed to make a grant to William, Lord de Bary, from the customs and cocket of Dingle (44 RDKPRI, 51-2; Tresham 1828, 52 no 44 p269 no 68). In 1485 there is a record of the seneschal of the liberty of Kerry holding assizes at Dingle (Brewer and Bullen 1871, 377). During the late sixteenth century Dingle became quite closely involved in political developments in Kerry because of its strategic importance. In 1569 it attracted government interest when it was proposed to wall the town in order to curb the power of the earl of Desmond and of Mac Carthaig (Brewer and Bullen 1867, 396). In 1570 Dingle was apparently occupied for a time by a French force during the rebellion of James FitzMaurice (Hamilton 1860, 435) and in 1571 Sir John Perrot, president of Munster, noted "six of James FitzMaurices men killed at the Dingle when he went there to take the great ordnance" (Hamilton 1860, 457). In his renewed campaign of 1579, FitzMaurice landed at Dingle with six Spanish ships and subsequently burned the town (Hamilton 1867 173-4). Contemporary reports described Dingle in the aftermath as whol1y sacked", "razed" and "broken” (Hamilton 1867,197,216; Brewer and Bullen 1868, 214). In 1580 Sir William Pelham noted that Dingle had been largely abandoned by its inhabitants and urged Sir William Winter to encourage them especially the fishermen and merchants, to return to the town (Brewer and Bullen 1868, 254). At the end of that year, after the massacre of Dún an Óir, there were 450 English soldiers in Dingle (Hamilton 1867, 273) and by 1582 Sir Henry Wallop the Vice Treasurer noted that “Dingle is now inhabited and should be entered in the schedule concerning imposts on wine (Hamilton 1867, 387). By this date a permanent ward of thirty soldiers was stationed there (Curtis1933-43, 322; Hamilton 1867, 405). Later that year, however, Dingle was besieged by the earl of Desmond and the baron of Lixnaw, but they were forced to lift the siege apparently after a sally by the soldiers and townsmen, with Sir Thomas Norrey's marching to the town’s relief (Hamilton 1867, 419). An English traveller’s account of 1589, apparently referring to the 1582 siege, noted that “the castle and all the houses in the Towne, save four, were won, burnt, and ruinated by the Erle of Desmond. These foure houses fortified themselves against him and withstood him and all his power perforce, so as he could not winne them” (Hitchcock 1852-3,140). The defeat and death of the earl of Desmond in 1583 marked a turning point in Dingle's history with the establishment of English control there. This was reflected in a proposal of 1585 to grant a charter of incorporation to the town, in order to promote the restoration of their ruinous and decayed estate, through the late rebellion there" (Morrin 1862, 105 15 RDKPRI, 144-5 no. 4816). It seems, however, that the charter was not actually granted until 1606 (Hitchcock 1852-3 134; Cusack 1871 appendix v; Weinbaum 1943, 204). References to the portreeve or provost of Dingle in 1579 and 1584, however, indicate that the town was incorporated before the 1585 Proposal (Hamilton 1867, 173; PRO 1881, 1). Further disruption occurred in 1598 when James FitzThomas, the 'sugan' earl of Desmond, landed at Dingle with 2000 Spaniards and the town surrendered to him (Atkinson 1895, 487, 400). Description
Though Dingle appears to have been an important centre of trade by 1257 (McKenna 1979, 16), the first official reference to the walling of the town is not until over 300 years later. In 1569 a request 'to have allowance of 1,000 pounds for the walling of the town of Dinglecoche in Kirreye which they are suitors of was sent to Elizabeth (Cal Car Mss 1569, 396). However it was not until 1585, 2 years after the end of the Desmond Rebellion, that a decree approving a murage grant to the town was issued (CPR Eliz. 1585, 105). The decree incorporated Dingle giving it 'such reasonable liberties as Drogheda hath' and the 'sum of 300 pounds in money towards the charge of walling their town with stone, three quarters of a mile compasse'. It seems likely however that the town had been previously fortified as the walls were recorded as only partially preserved in 1589. At that time the town was described as having had 'gates (as it seemeth) in times past at either end to open and shut as a town of war' (McKenna 1979, 22). Though much decayed by 1756 (Smith, 177), traces of very thick walling, bonded with a clay mortar, were still visible in 1853 near the N end of the town (Hitchcock 1854, 135), and the line of the W curtain was indicated on the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS map. There are no visible remains of any fortifications in the modern town but the linear street plan and burgage plots of its medieval predecessor are evident. Rectangular in plan, the walled town enclosed an area of c. 15 acres with suburbs in Goat Street and John Street, and a linear market in Main Street (Bradley 1976, 124). A built-up archway observed by McKenna in a garden wall at the rear of Dyke Gate Lane may have formerly provided access to the market area. Dingle town defences described by Thomas (1992, 68-70) as follows; ‘small fragments of town wall to SW of Main St. (noted by Bradley 1985 app. as 'possible' town wall). Possible name survival—Dyke Gate Lane - MAPS OS 1846 — SW line of town wall marked. WRITTEN DESCRIPTIONS 1587: 'commodious harbour, also a walled town and corporation' (Camden, 1753 ed l). 1589: Dingle—town wall (Anon, ed Hogan 1878, 189). 1599: 'Dinglenacush is chief town in all that part of Ireland, it consisteth of but one main street, from whence some smaller do proceed on either side. It hath had gates (as it seemeth) in times past at either end to open and shut as a town of war and a castle also. The houses are very strongly built with thick stone walls and narrow windows like unto castles ……There remaineth yet a thick stone wall that passeth overthwart the midst of the street which was a part of their fortification The town is now again [after Desmond attack] somewhat repaired, but in effect there remain but the ruins of the former town' (E. Wright — Hitchcock 140). 1756: 'Dingle is only walled town but now very inconsiderable town walls made of clay mortar, because lime scarce, and much decayed fort at entrance to harbour now demolished' (Smith 73, 177). 1852: 'traces of town's walls remain, especially near the Grove on N side' (Hitchcock 135). - PROPERTY AND TOWN RECORDS: no evidence. MURAGE: a single murage grant is known, dated 1585, and made at the request of the inhabitants who retailed their sufferings resulting from the Desmond wars. The Queen incorporated the town as 'fully as Drogheda' and granted, 'for a stone wall three-quarters of a mile [1,188m] in compass', as proposed €300, to be acquired at the rate of €20 p.a. from the import of wines there (CPCR II 5). This may be seen as the culmination of a number of reports/proposals on Dingle and the area generally — in 1569 a request for 'for the walling in of the town of Dinglecoche' was made in a note on the presidency of Munster (CCP 1 266); in 1580 Pelham recommended that the town of Dingle should be fortified to withstand a possible Spanish landing (CCP 11 306). By 1584 Dingle was on a list of 7 walled towns proposed by the Lord Deputy which included the medieval town of Athlone as well as more recent sites such as Newry (CSPI 533); and in 1589 Dingle was included in a list of 'walled towns' in Munster which required garrisons (CSPI 80). Yet, less than 10 years later it was described as 'not being walled or otherwise defensible' and so it had been surrendered by the townsmen (Norreys to Privy Council, CSPI 1599, 15). This may imply that the walling progressed slowly or inadequately, or even that later writers were misled by the 1585 charter into locating a wall that never actually materialised. This latter seems unlikely given Smith's description of the structure, and the local tradition and/or knowledge which led the Ordnance Surveyors to mark it on the first 6-inch map. Other charters: incorporated in 1585, in a warrant but not activated until c. 1608. No murage or other charters are known for the medieval period. There is a 1299 reference to the 'men of the vill of Dengen' in Kerry (CDI IV 658). The customs returns point to the considerable importance of the port then and even into the 16th century (Orpen III 146; Lydon 1973, 12; NHI 1984 111 12). Circuit details PERIOD: Late Tudor—on murage and other evidence. AREA: 4—5/8 ha. (values speculative). PERIMETER: 875m (incl. 200m along river)/1 175m (1 188m—1585 ref.). SHAPE: square/rectangular. STRUCTURE: stone—clay mortar. GATES: total—2/3. N + S — main gates on single street. W—probable, to harbour— Dyke. TOWERS: unknown but possibly 3—4 at corners (castle at one corner). FOSSE: unknown but to E a stream and to S dyke, possibly in association with an embankment against the sea. FORT: only a mid-17th century fort known, located away from the town on the headland to the SE (Smith's co. map). OTHER SITE STRUCTURES: Dingle's raison d'etre was its natural harbour, which made it for long the main port of Kerry despite its lack of centrality as far as the rest of the county was concerned; the import of essentials or wine and luxuries for the more settled, lowland areas of N Kerry and the export of wool from the highlands of central Kerry, the Dingle and other peninsulas, and of fish from the sheltered and extensive bay and nearby sea were the main commodities. The small stream provided an area for milling as well as a fosse, but bridging it would not have been a decisive locating factor. There is a reference to a castle, in addition to gates, but its site is unknown and not necessarily that marked so on the OS map, which may be part of the N gate; the castle of 1580 is said to have been at the rear of the market house and used as a prison in 1815 (Hitchcock 1855). There is no obvious market place but the mam street widens slightly in its N half. The parish church is just off the main street. There are no references to religious houses but the street names towards the harbour — Grey Lane and Holy Ground — are at least suggestive of a Franciscan house and there is a well to E of the stream dedicated to St. John. Two separate suburbs existed by 1846, Upper and Lower colony, to SE beyond the stream and to W alongside the quay resp. Discussion: Little is known of Dingle before the late 16th century, although it appears intermittently in the customs returns of the later 13th and 14th centuries. It may indeed have been a walled town at that time—it would have been as likely a candidate as its nearest neighbour, Tralee, which got a murage grant in 1286, along with the old Kerry episcopal centre of Ardfert nearby. But there are no medieval murage records and little is known even of the Tudor walled area. The evidence seems sufficient to confirm that a town wall was built but a doubt must remain, given the Norrey's description of 1599. However, its wording may be an exaggeration or the result of mis-information. It is contradicted by Wright’s contemporary description. Archaeological investigation of the possible surviving town wall remains would probably resolve the issue and might even show that the Tudor wall rested largely on an earlier medieval circui
KE043-224002 Castle - tower house
Description
The site of a castle is indicated on the OS 6-inch map (1st ed.) at the junction of Green St and Main St where Siopa an Chúinne (Corner Shop) now stands today. This may be the castle reputedly built by Peter Rice. There is a datestone of 1586 (KE043-224030-) in the wall of the adjoining house but another datestone (KE043-224031-) with the inscription RICE ANNO 1563 which was recorded by Smith (1756, 177) is not now visible. Rice House described in the Urban Survey of Kerry (Bradley 1987, 62) as follows; 'Smith (1756, 177) states that he saw a building with "an inscription, signifying that the house was built by one RICE, anno 1563 and on a stone beneath two roses, are carved these words, AT THE ROSE IS THE BEST WINE". This may have been located at the junction of Green St. and Main St. where the O. S. maps show a “castle" site. The present building on this corner is modern. A rectangular stone with the date 1586 is inserted at second floor level into the second house to the west of this site, in Green Street. The upper part of the stone is roughly dressed, indicating that it is not in its original position (Cuppage 1986, 380). The above description is derived from J. KE043-224004 Castle - tower house
Description
A castle built by the Husseys was granted to the Earl of Ormond in the confiscations which followed the Desmond Rebellion (Smith 1756, 177). It was subsequently purchased by the Knight of Kerry and later, known as the Market House, it became the official residence of the Sovereign of Dingle (McKenna 1979, 24). The vaults were used as the town jail until 1815 (O'Sullivan 1931, 131). A pointed doorway, probably of medieval origin, was preserved in the remains of a building on the site in 1853 (Hitchcock 1855, 355). A lintelled passageway leading to a chamber, c. 3 x 1m, uncovered in an adjacent garden c. 1952, may also have been associated with this castle (OPW). The site lies at the rear of a business premises on Main Street; inserted in the wall of an adjacent outbuilding is a carved stone decorated with a 16th century paired vine motif with interlaced stem. Hussey House described in the Urban Survey of Kerry (Bradley 1987, 63-4) as follows; 'Another important building that was mentioned in Dingle's proposed charter of 1585 which granted the corporation a house in the town forfeited by John Hussey "to make of the same a gaol and a common Court-house (Morrin 1862, 105). Smith (1756, 176) claimed that the building was granted on its forfeiture to the earl of Ormond and later bought by the Knight of Kerry; it was functioning in 1756 as the town gaol. O'Donovan (1983, 115) could find no trace of this gaol in 1841 but Hitchcock (1854-5, 355) supplies a description of the building. It was located to the rear of the then market-house and it still displayed "a low dark, doorway, and a small cut stone and grated window", while apparently built into modern walls were "a cut stone doorway the shape being something between semi-circular and pointed, but approaching more to the latter", and a stone with "a portion of some raised carving, resembling (as well as I could see it a tree". It was located on the south side of Main St., on the site of the present P. T. Fitzgerald's Supermarket. Nothing remains of the pointed door, linteled passage, or room, which probably formed part of a back house, or middle-house, in the original complex. The decorated stone (KE043-224032-) survives, however, embedded at second floor level in the east facing wall of a building at the rear of the supermarket. Description
In a shopfront on the E side of Green St. are two plaques (KE043-224033-, KE043-224034-). This record is for the lower stone (c. 0.22m square) which has a raised border decorated with two opposed birds in relief. Stone fragments described in the Urban Survey of Kerry (Bradley 1987, 65) as follows; Two houses in Green Street have wall plaques which may be of seventeenth century date. (1) The gable of 'Gifts' [now Bean Coffee Bar] has two plaques. The upper stone is circular (diam. 22 cm) with an interlaced design of six loops in relief; the lower one is square and has a pair of opposed birds on a perch within a raised border (H. 22 W.22). (2) On a house opposite Gifts' and adjacent to ' Hands Accomodation' is a plaque with a large bird holding a smaller bird in its claw, and a third bird flying above. Description
In a shopfront on the E side of Green St. are two plaques (KE043-224033-, KE043-224034-). This record is for the upper stone only a circular section of which is exposed. It bears a hexagonal motif executed in raised interlace. See attached photograph taken from Bradley 1987, Fig. 26 Architectural fragments described in the Urban Survey of Kerry (Bradley 1987, 65) as follows; Two houses in Green Street have wall plaques which may be of seventeenth century date. (1) The gable of 'Gifts' has two plaques. The upper stone is circular (diam. 22 cm) with an interlaced design of six loops in relief; the lower one is square and has a pair of opposed birds on a perch within a raised border (H. 22 W.22). (2) On a house opposite Gifts' and adjacent to ' Hands Accomodation' is a plaque with a large bird holding a smaller bird in its claw, and a third bird flying above. Description
Attached three-bay three-storey hotel, built c. 1820, with round-headed door opening to centre. Pitched and hipped concrete tiles roof with rendered chimneystack and aluminium rooflights. Painted roughcast rendered walls with render plinth, string courses, eaves band and four iron wall ties to facade. Painted stone sills and lugged render surrounds to window openings. Timber six-over-six pane sliding sash windows at ground floor. Timber replacement windows to upper floors. Arched doorway having painted stone Ionic doorcase with fanlight, breakfront entablature, engaged columns and timber double-leaf doors. Set on corner of Main Street and Benner's Lane.

End-of-terrace two-bay two-storey house, built c. 1860. Pitched slate roof with top courses replaced in artificial slate, cast-iron rooflight at rear and cast-iron gutter. Painted rendered walls, with roughcast rendered rubble stone gable wall. Painted sills to timber two-over-two pane sliding sash windows at ground floor and to paired one-over-one pane sliding sash windows at first floor. Square-headed doorway having replacement uPVC door, overlight and screeded step. Street frontage.

Terraced three-bay two-storey house with dormer attic, built c. 1840, with round-headed door opening to centre having fanlight. Single-bay two-storey return to rear to south-west having slate-hung elevation to north and single-bay two-storey lean-to projecting lower bay to south-west. Renovated, c. 1910, with timber pilaster shopfront inserted to left ground floor having fluted pilasters and moulded cornice. Pitched artificial slate roof with rendered chimneystacks, hipped dormers and cast-iron gutter and downpipe. Hipped roof to return. Painted rendered walls with projecting eaves band. Thin painted sills to hornless timber six-over-six pane sliding sash windows. Ground floor window in unequal panels and with iron window guard. Two-over-two pane sliding sash windows to dormers. Timber two-panel door and spoked fanlight. Street frontage.

Painted stone sills to timber sliding sash windows of varying dates, six-over-three pane windows at second floor, three-over-three pane sliding sash windows with unequal panes at first floor and one-over-one pane sliding sash windows at ground floor. Three-pane fixed window to right ground floor. Street frontage.

Terraced four-bay three-storey house, built c. 1860, originally with segmental-headed integral carriage arch to right ground floor and single-bay three-storey lean-to lower return to rear to south-west. Extensively renovated, refenestrated and extended to rear to south-west in late twentieth century, comprising three-bay single-storey flat-roofed return, timber shopfront inserted to ground floor and entrance bay inserted to former carriage arch. Now also in use as apartments. Pitched artificial slate roof. Exposed rubble red sandstone walls to façade. Painted rendered walls to side and rear. Replacement uPVC windows to upper floors.

Pair of end-of-terrace four- and five-bay two-storey houses, built c. 1860, with integral carriage to north house. House to north renovated and extended to rear to west, comprising two-bay single-storey return and openings remodelled to ground floor to accommodate commercial use. House to south extended to south comprising single-bay single-storey recessed end bay. Pitched slate roofs with rendered chimneystacks. Exposed coursed rubble stone walls having red brick string course to right building above ground floor openings, rendered projecting eaves band, slate-hung rear wall and rendered gable. Red brick flat and swept arches and reveals to replacement uPVC windows. Square-headed doorways. Door to shop with three-pane overlight and flanked by arched openings later filled by display windows.

Description
Detached five-bay two-storey house with dormer attic, built c. 1770, with single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting porch to centre having round-headed door opening with fanlight and moulded cornice. Originally Lord Ventry's town house, subsequently in use as bank, c. 1920. Now in residential use with offices to part ground floor. Pitched artificial slate roof with rendered and ashlar chimneystacks having moulded bands, hipped dormers, overhanging eaves and decorative hoppers. Roughcast rendered facade with render string course, rendered porch, lugged render architrave and keystone to doorway. Slate-hung elevation to south-west gable end. Retaining interior features. Section of iron railings, c. 1920, to forecourt to north-west. Set on corner of Green Street and Grey's lane.
