• KE066-055 Souterrain
  Description

  In heavily overgrown pasture, to the N of a field boundary, c. 5m NW of a stream. There are no visible remains of this souterrain. The landowner recalls that it was stone-lined and lintelled and that some stones were removed during drainage works. The area is now very disturbed. A possible rath (KE066-055001-) lies c. 8m to the NNE. Two fulachtaí fia (KE066-054----, KE066-056----) are c. 95m to the SW and c. 90m to the NE, respectively.   Description

  In pasture, at the top of a SW-facing slope. This possible rath is not visible at ground level. It is indicated on the 1939 OS 6-inch map by a dashed curving line SSW-NE, abutting a linear NE-SW field boundary at SE, which may indicate the remains of a rath (diam. c. 35m).   Description

  Description

  In pasture, on a SSW-facing slope, to the W of a stream. A D-shaped spread (straight E side: 10m N-S; 5.4m E-W) of burnt material noticeable at the time of inspection because of its cover of short grass and buttercups. A possible fulacht fia (KE066-056----) is c. 85m to the SE and a souterrain (KE066-055----) is c. 100m to the SSW. • KE066-070 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In a wooded area, on a SE-facing slope, immediately S of a lane. A roughly circular area (c. 27m N-S; c. 27m E-W) defined by two banks and an intervening fosse and a possible outer fosse. The inner bank (Wth 5.1m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.5m) is covered with undergrowth. The intervening fosse (Wth 2.2m at base) is evident NNW-NE and S-NW where it is used as a path; the path breaches the outer bank at NE and NW. The outer bank (Wth 1.9m; ext. H 1.45m) is evident NW-WSW and a stone-built NE-SW field boundary truncates it at WNW. The outer bank along the N and W arcs is abutted externally by an E-W estate wall and by a NE-SW path, respectively. A possible outer fosse (Wth 4m; D 0.4m) is evident SSE-SW. There is a causeway entrance (Wth c. 3.5m) at E. The interior is raised and slopes down to the E. There is a small depression, beside a Scot's Pine tree, in the S half of the interior. A large depression outside the outer bank at NNE may be the result of quarrying. According to local information, there was a limekiln nearby.   In recently reseeded pasture, on a gentle NE-facing slope. Circular area (dims. 28m NW-SE; 27m NE-SW) defined by remains of levelled bank (Wth 10.5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.25m). • KE066-204 Fulacht fia
  Description

  This potential feature was reported by Michael Connolly, County Archaeologist, Kerry County Council. It was identified by him during the course of an assessment of a 40 square mile area for the purpose of choosing a road route in 2000 to the north of Killarney. Reported to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland as an extant fulacht fia. There was no obvious surface trace of a fulacht fia at this location, however the search locus was limited due to large areas of windblown trees. For this reason, the results of the current survey are inconclusive.

  Description

  In improved pasture to NE and in mixed forestry to SW. Remains of circular area (dims. c. 25m NW-SE; c. 24m NE-SW) defined by remains of levelled scarp (Wth 2.5m; H 0.8m). Perimeter of monument is not visible ESE->SSE due to windblown trees. Monument bisected by field wall (long axis NW-SE). Monument is a distinct plateau defined by levelled scarp.   In pasture, with restricted views due to nearby forestry. A slightly raised circular area (c. 30m N-S; c. 30m E-W) defined by a low scarp. The cropmark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) is visible on an aerial photograph (OSAP, 2120/2121) taken in 1989.   Description

  In level pasture, with views SW to Mangerton Mountain. A roughly circular area (c. 12m E-W; c. 10m N-S) enclosed by a low earthen bank (Wth 3.3m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.3m). Faint traces of an internal fosse are evident ENE-SW. Boulders and smaller stones clutter the S half of the interior and its enclosing bank. Trees and undergrowth partially obscure the ring-barrow.   Description

  In rough, poorly drained area of improved pasture, to S of shallow land drain. Field reclaimed by track machine in recent years, unearthing substantial boulders that were reburied (local information). Reported to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland as an extant cairn. There is no visible surface trace of a cairn at this location. A roughly circular cropmark is evident at this location upon aerial photography (OSi 2005).   Description

  In improved pasture, abutting E-boundary of field. Identified initially by landowner when ploughing this field in recent years. Remains of semi-circular levelled mound (dims. 28m E-W; 24m N-S; H 0.2-0.25m) of black soil, charcoal and heat-shattered stone. According to local information, a rectangular trough was recovered in this area during ploughing and has since been preserved in-situ and backfilled.
