• LF010-029001 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  On a low but prominent hill in pasture, overlooking Killeen Lough c. 320m to the SW. Depicted on the 1837 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a rectangular enclosure named ‘Castle’ and ‘Bawn’ (LF010-029002-). The monument has been levelled and, apart from large quantities of loose stone on the hill from SW–W–N, no visible surface trace survives. A rectangular area (6.3m NE–SW; 2.2m NW–SE), which is c. 0.2m lower than the external ground level, was noted c. 6m to the SE of the highest point of the hill. Its NE and NW sides are well defined but only the outline of the SE and SW sides are identifiable. • LF010-030 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a SSW-facing slope in pasture. A raised subcircular area (46m E-W; 42m N-S) enclosed from ENE-E-SE and at SW and NW by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 5-5.7m; H 0.5-0.6m). Elsewhere the defining element is a scarp (H 0.7-1.9m). An external fosse (Wth 5.7-7.7m; D 0.5-0.6m) is evident from WNW-NW and from ENE-E-S. A break (Wth 4.5m) in the bank at ESE marks the original entrance. The rath is divided into unequal portions by a NE-SW field boundary. Compiled by: Patrick F. • LF010-032 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a SW-facing slope in pasture. A raised circular area (diam. 30m) defined from SSE-S-SSW and from WSW-W-N by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 5.5m; H 0.5m) and by a scarp (H 0.65-1.8m) from N-E-SSE. An external fosse (Wth 5.4m; D 0.15-0.75m) is visible from W-NW-NNW and from NNE-E-SSE. From SSW-WSW the enclosing elements have been levelled. A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded a low outer bank, which is no longer identifiable. The original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011

  Description

  Detached four-bay single-storey vernacular house, built c. 1870, having windbreak to front elevation (southeast) and two-bay single-storey outbuilding attached to the southwest gable end (aligned with building). Pitched corrugated-metal roof with two rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Flat-roof to windbreak. Painted smooth rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with rendered sills and two-over-two timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed door opening to porch with timber battened door. Complex of single-storey outbuildings to site having corrugated-metal roofs, roughcast rendered walls, and square-headed openings with timber battened doors and timber casement windows. Corrugated-metal barn to rear. Set in own grounds with gable end adjacent to road, having yard and outbuildings to front (southeast). Rendered gate piers (on square-plan) to entrance. Located to the west/northwest of Granard.
