• MA062-071 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, in a thicket of overgrowth, located on top of a hill giving good views NW–NE over a broad expanse of grassland and bog. There is a N-flowing stream 90m to W. The ground falls steeply to S–SE into a natural depression of wet ground. This rath is shown on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as an oval embanked enclosure, with a field boundary on a N-S crossing the E half of the interior, and a building/farmstead abutting the W side. On 1919 OS edition only the W half of the enclosure is depicted. Only the W half of the rath remains. It consists of a semi-circular, raised area (c. 30m N–S; c. 15-20m E–W to quarry pit) defined SSW–N by an earthen scarp (Wth slope 2.3m; H 1m at NW). The E half of the enclosure has been quarried away, although it is possible that a portion of the enclosure may be incorporated into the remnants of a N–S field fence on the E edge of the quarried area. A farm track on a NW–SE axis, flanked by field fences, clips the W edge of the rath, and a field fence on a roughly E–W axis, clips the scarp at N. • MA062-072 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on top of a rise, overlooking a bend in the Sonnagh River c. 70m to S; in recent times, the course of the river has been diverted and it now lies further to S. Broadly oval area (25.5m NW-SE; 20.5m NE-SW) defined by an earthen scarp (Wth slope 2.5m at NE, 4.6m at SW; ext. H 1.4m at NE, 2.4m at SW). The scarp is well defined, and at S−NW utilises the steep natural fall of ground. A low bank (Wth 1-1.5m; H 0.3-0.4m) tops the scarp at S−NW, but this may be a later field boundary. A slight depression is evident immediately outside the scarp at NE−SE, possibly indicating a fosse. There is a poorly defined low area (Wth c. 2m) in the scarp at SE and narrow eroded gaps at N and NE, but it is unclear if any of these indicates the location of an original entrance. The interior is level in the W and centre, sloping down from there gently to NE−E, and more steeply to SE. A depression or trench (L 4m; Wth 2m; D 1m) cuts through the scarp at NW; it is largely obscured by overgrowth and its significance is uncertain. A road skirts the rath at SW−WNW. A field boundary, shown intersecting with the S edge of the rath on the 1919 OS 6-inch map, has been removed. • MA062-146 Metalworking site
  Description

  This field is known locally as ‘Muileann Iarn’ (iron mill) and suggests the former presence of a metal-working site here. There formerly were ‘holes or round openings’ in the field which the landowner’s father had filled in to improve the land. A number of pieces of slag were recovered from a field c. 440m to the NE (ITM coordinates 544754, 800975) in 2003: these are considered to have come from a blast furnace and are in the National Museum of Ireland (pers. comm. A. Halpin). There are no structures or features indicated on the OS 1st. ed. 6-inch map (surveyed 1837) in this field which would suggest that the site had long been abandoned by the early 19th century: the possibility that it dates to the 17th century cannot be ruled out.
