• MA062-073 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a rise, from which there is a gradual fall of ground for c. 250m towards the Sonnagh River. There are extensive views NE−SE along the course of the river and over a lowlying basin of bog and reclaimed pasture which lies to E of the river. Raised, oval area (32.7m NW–SE; 41.5m NE–SW) defined by a scarp (Wth slope 1.4m at SW, 3m at NW; H 0.85m at SW, 2.2m at NW), which is enhanced, especially at NW, by the natural fall of ground. The scarp at NE–ESE has been modified and incorporated into a field bank (Wth 1m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.4m) with a vertical external face. The SE−S quadrant has been quarried out leaving a pit (max. dim. c. 15m); this damage had already taken place by the time of the 1919 OS 6-inch map which depicts the pit. The interior has a slight slope down from the centre to NE−SE. A small pit (diam. 1m; D 0.7m) close to the scarp at SE may be a collapsed animal burrow. • MA062-121 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a natural rise. The fields immediately to S of the enclosure have been converted to forestry. Slightly raised, circular area (c. 44m N-S; 42.5m E-W) defined by an earthen scarp (H 0.55m at NE; 1-1.4m at S). An ENE-WSW field fence, with a parallel slightly sunken, grassed-over farm track (Wth 2.5m) on its N side, cuts across the interior to S of centre. To the S of the field fence, the enclosing scarp is well preserved but largely obscured by overgrowth. To N of the fence, the enclosing scarp has been has levelled to a low rise. A field fence, on a NNW-SSE axis, clips the W−SW edge of the enclosure, and another field fence, on a NW-SE axis, abuts the scarp at the SW. • MA062-122001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on top of a ridge, with a fall of ground to E, S and W. The location provides good views from S−NE along the curving course of the Sonnagh River, which lies c. 80m to S, and also to W and NW over a flat expanse of bog. This possible rath is shown on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as an oval, embanked enclosure; by the time of the 1919 edition the E half had been levelled and it is depicted as a semi-circular hachured area (diam. c. 35m NW−SE), open to the E. It has been entirely levelled, but the ephemeral outline of a sub-circular area (39m N-S; 37m E-W) can be discerned at ground level. According to the local information, it was originally enclosed by an earthen bank. There may be a souterrain (MA062-122002-) in the interior (SMR file: pers. comm. M. Ruane 1991).   Description

  Located in a possible rath (MA062-122001-). There may be a souterrain in the rath interior (SMR file: pers. comm. M. Ruane 1991). According to local information, large stones were uncovered and removed from the enclosing bank of the rath in the past; the stones may have been part of a souterrain.
