  Description

  Situated close to the shore at Annagh Strand at the foot of a steep N facing slope. The remains stand immediately N of a ruined hut and are represented by a tall, gable-shaped stone (2m H) aligned E-W with two other stones (0.8m H) set immediately to the N of its W end. There is a further large stone exposed to the N and it may be a possible prostrate slab. A line of small stones immediately E of the monument may represent an attempt to convert it to a pen or other structure. The monument cannot be classified with certainty in its present condition but interpretation of the remains as the last vestiges of a megalithic tomb would not be inconsistent with the evidence. Although the gable-shaped stone suggests affinities with the portal tomb class (MacDonald 1990, 7), the tomb must remain unclassified pending further investigation.   Description

  In rough, heather-covered upland bog, located on the lower SW-facing slope of a high ridge in NW of Achill Island. Ground rises steeply to NE, and falls away gradually to SE, levelling out to an area of worked bog. This structure (L 7.5m; H 0.3-0.6m) consists of a low, trapezoidal cairn of stones, which narrows from a broad façade (Wth 5.3m) at the S end, to a markedly narrow N end (1.5m). It is engulfed in heather, sod and clumps of sedge, which make it difficult to interpret the remains and their relationship to a hut site (MA042-048002-), which stands immediately adjacent at SW. The broad, low S façade is defined by drystone walling (H 0.6m), rising in two to three courses, and also incorporates at least one upright stone (L 1.1m; T 0.1m; H 0.5m). The W side is defined by what may be a double wall construction, with an outer wall of contiguous, upright stones/boulders (largest measures: L0.9m; T 0.1-0.15m; H 0.7m) facing an inner wall of drystone construction and/or uprights. At the narrow N end, a single upright end stone and two side stones (H c. 0.3m) appear to enclose a small chamber or box-like setting (c. 1.5m E−W; c. 0.9m N−S). Stones can be felt beneath the heather on the E side, but upstanding walling is not evident, except at the junction with the S wall. In the interior area, amidst a low jumble of heather-covered stones, there is a hint of a roughly central, narrow ‘passage’ or break extending N−S, with a prostrate slab partly overlying the S end. Appended to the SW corner of the structure is a D-shaped hut site (MA042-048002-) (c. 3m N−S; c. 3m E−W) of rough drystone construction, with a narrow entrance gap on the E side. The hut appears to post-date the trapezoidal structure, and may have been built with stones robbed from it. It is unclear to what extent the walling on the S and W sides of the structure has been modified by the builders of the hut, and to what purpose. This roughly D-shaped hut (c. 3m N−S; c. 3m E−W) is enclosed by a drystone wall, which is straight on the S side, but describes a curve from the SW to NE. There is a narrow entrance gap at the E side, now partly blocked by displaced stones. The wall (Wth 0.6-0.7m at S; 0.9-1m at N; H 1.2-1.5m) is roughly built of medium-large field stones, and narrows slightly in cross-section from base to top. Sedges grow densely in the interior. Low, roughly-built walling (Wth 0.4-0.6; H 0.3m) -little more than a jumble of stones -encloses a square area (2m E−W; 2m N−S) appended to the exterior of the hut on the S side, and a small, C-shaped area (diam. 2m), defined by a setting of low, contiguous stones, is appended to W side of the hut. The appearance of this hut site suggests that it may be relatively late in date, but its exact date and function are unknown. It is possible that it is one of six small rectilinear structures or enclosures (max. dims. c. 5-15), which are shown, widely scattered (between 25-200m apart) across this area of bog, on the 1837 OS 6-inch map, but are not shown on 1921 edition. It could have served as a type of booley hut, or animal pen, or may have been built as a temporary shelter for peat cutters. Located immediately to NE of the hut, is a trapezoidal stone-built structure (MA042-048001-) (L 7.5m; H 0.3-0.6m) of uncertain function, which appears to pre-date the hut; indeed, the hut may be built from stones robbed from the trapezoidal structure. • MA042-050 Hut site
  Description

  In rough, heather-covered upland bog, located on the lower SW-facing slope of a high ridge in NW of Achill Island. It stands in the lee of a low rise which slopes up to a small natural terrace. There is an area of worked bog c. 60m to S. This consists of a subrectangular area (6.5m NW−SE; 5.5m NE−SW) defined by a drystone wall. The wall (H 0.6-0.8m) is roughly constructed of medium-large stones and boulders, and varies in width from 0.6m at E, 1m at W, to c. 1.4m wide at NW where the wall has a broad, almost buttress-like external slope. There is an entrance gap (Wth c. 1m) at S. The hut site is engulfed in heather, sedges and ferns. The date and function of this hut site are uncertain; its appearance suggests it may be relatively late in date It may be one of six small rectilinear structures or enclosures (max. dims. c. 5-15), which are shown widely scattered (between 25-200m apart) across this area of bog on the 1837 OS 6-inch map, but are not shown on 1921 edition. It may have functioned as a booley hut, an animal pen, or even a temporary shelter for peat cutters. A similar hut site (MA042-048002-) and a structure (MA042-048002-) are located c. 100m to NE. • MA042-051 Signal tower
  Description

  Situated towards the E end of a low ridge (195m OD) that runs between Slievemore to the E and Croaghaun to the W, the two mountains which dominate the western half of Achill Island. Site located c. 473m S\SSE of coastline at its nearest point. The ground slopes away moderately to the N, E and S, and rises slightly to the W. The surrounding area consists of unenclosed blanket bog with a disused quartz quarry located c. 480m to the E\ESE. The signal tower has unobstructed views to the N and S, but the views to the E and W are blocked by the adjacent mountains. The signal tower at Tarmon Hill Signal Tower (MA024-031----), located c. 12.6 kms to the N at the SW corner of the Belmullet Peninsula, and the signal tower at Shivel Head (MA084-001010-), located c. 22.3kms to the S\SSW at the W tip of Clare Island, are both clearly visible in good weather. This signal tower at Slievemore is located c. 600m WSW of a standing stone (MA042-014----) and c. 1.65kms E\ESE of an ‘unclassified’ megalithic tomb (MA042-012----). An early nineteenth-century (c. 1806) originally two-storey square-plan signal tower, built of roughly coursed limestone rubble with flush roughly squared quoins to the corners. Slight batter to base of tower. The square signal tower survives as a partially collapsed ruin, and consists of the semi-basement level and fragments of the ground and first floor levels (int. dims. 4.25m N-S x 4.25m E-W; H 5.98m). Some sections of roughcast lime render survive to the exterior, particularly to the E elevation. The S and N walls feature the remains\lower sections of pairs of window openings at ground floor level, whilst the E wall features the distinctive shallow external bowing that indicates the presence of a chimney flue contained within the wall structure. Two square chutes pass through the E wall: a chute to the S of the wall that passes horizontally through the wall, emerging at the top of the semi-basement level at the SE corner of the building; and a chute at the N that slopes steeply upwards, emerging in the base of the N alcove. The W wall is plain. The internal face of the E wall at ground floor level features square-headed alcoves flanking a central shallow segmental-headed fireplace with roughly dressed and squared voussoirs over forming the arch. Some sections of lime plaster survive to the interior. The internal face of the S wall features the lower portions of the flared embrasures of two ground floor window openings. The internal face of the W wall is devoid of features. The internal face of the N wall is largely collapsed, with only traces of the flared outer edges of the ground floor windows and some of the joist holes for the ground floor remaining visible. These features allow for the tower to be orientated; the first floor doorway would have been located on the W wall, and bartizans would have protected the NE and SE corners. Two early twentieth-century photographs of the signal tower confirm this arrangement. One of the photographs shows the tower almost complete to full height at this time with a narrow rectangular machicolation over the doorway, and the rear of a bartizan over the SE corner. The bartizan appears to have had sides extending out at right angles from the tower’s walls with the outer face curving around the corner of the building. The second photograph shows that the upper parts of the N, W and S walls had collapsed by this time. The E wall had featured a first floor fireplace flanked by alcoves. The signal tower is located to the E side of a rectangular enclosure (54m E-W x 27m N-S) defined by the low remains of a rubble stone wall with a simple entrance gap located one third of the way along the S wall. The wall stands in the base of a shallow ditch. The foundation of a small oval hut (int. dims. c. 5m x 4m) are located within the enclosure to the S of the signal tower, which may post-date the use of the signal tower. The foundation of a rectangular building\structure (int. dims 7.2m E-W x 2.7m N-S), defined by a low rubble stone wall, is located at the NW corner of the enclosure. The foundations are likely the remains of a storage building used during the occupation of the signal tower. A partially-infilled vertically-sided oval pit (3.25m E-W x 2.7m N-S; D 0.7m) is located c. 12m W of the signal tower. The sides are now grassed over but occasional stretches of intact roughly coursed rubble stonework are visible. This pit may be the remains of a lime kiln and\or the socket for a signal mast. The signal tower was part of a system of over 80 signal stations constructed by the British Board of Ordnance in the first decade of the 19th century to warn of the approach of a French invasion fleet. Signalling between sites was accomplished using a naval signal post. The system formed a continuous chain from Dublin Bay running clockwise all the way around the coast to Malin Head in County Donegal. It was abandoned by the mid-1810s when the threat of a French invasion diminished (Kerrigan 1995, 157-66).   Remains of freestanding single-bay two-stage signal tower, built 1804-6, on a square plan. In ruins, 1898. Remains of coursed rubble limestone walls on battered base with cut- or rough cut limestone flush quoins to corners. Outlines of paired square-headed window openings. Interior in ruins with camber-headed niches centred on camber-headed fireplace. Set in unkempt grounds on an elevated site with remains of boundary wall to perimeter.
