• ME018-006 Souterrain
  Description

  Located towards the bottom of a gentle NW-facing slope. An underground chamber was discovered c. 1955 in a field known as the ‘Blue Field’ (NMI file) but it was closed up before it could be recorded (Kelly 1977, 62). Archaeological testing (19E0476) by P. D. Sweetman c. 30m to the SW at the closest point produced no related material (excavations.ie 2019:767). • ME018-007 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located towards the bottom of a W-facing slope. A faint circular feature (diam. 35m) is depicted on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is annotated as a ‘Fort’, and a small hachured feature is represented on the 1908 edition. It was described in 1968 (SMR file) as a circular enclosure (diam. 36m E-W; 33m N-S) defined by a broad, low bank (Wth of base 7-9.5m; int. H 0.2-0.5m; ext. H 0.5-0.7m) and an outer fosse (Wth of top 6.5-9m; ext. D 0.2-0.3m). The likely entrance (Wth of base 3.3m) is at WSW and the perimeter was skirted by a field bank S-SW. The visible profile has eroded since then but its fosse is visible on OSI images (1995). • ME018-014 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  Situated on a fairly level low-lying landscape with a NW-SE stream c. 80m to the SW. Aerial photographs from c. 1950 (ACAP: V307/1590) and 1973 (GSAP, N 269) show a large circular vegetation mark (diam. c. 140m) within which is the vegetation mark of rectangular enclosure (dims c. 50m x c. 60m). They can also be seen on MapGenie (2013) but are likely to be meandering old stream beds and not antiquities.   Description

  Situated on a level landscape. Aerial photographs from c. 1950 (ACAP: V307/1590) and 1973 (GSIAP: N 269) show the cropmarks of a rectangular field system associated with enclosure sites (ME018-016----). The fields (dims c. 70m x c. 50m) are aligned N-S generally and not with the current field system. They cover and area of about 35acres (c. 14 ha).   Description

  Situated on the summit of Balsaw Hill with wide views out in every direction. This stone has an oval cross-section at the base (dims 1.15m x 0.6m) tapering to a blunt point (H 1.6m).   Description

  Cast-iron water pump, erected c.1870, with angled pumping handle. Fluted neck and cap with pointed finial. Foliate decoration to spout. Set in recess with limestone walls. Now padded to shaft.
