Description
Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 00E0796), beside a stream above an area of fen peat on a gentle S-facing slope. A deposit (15m x 8m; D 0.4m) consisting largely of charcoal, ash and burnt sandstone was initially exposed. Removal of this layer revealed a trough and four circular pits which possibly functioned as hearths. The trough was rectangular shaped (2m x 1.4m; max. D 0.55m), filled with the burnt mound material and had the impressions of at least three wooden planks at its base. A convex scraper was recovered from one of the four pits. Description
Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 00E0479). Consisted of four pits and two postholes. Two postholes and one pit were found in close proximity and the other three pits were found some distance away to the N. The fills of the features varied considerably and the only finds were a piece of struck flint and a piece of slag recovered from two of the pits. Analysis of these features is difficult due to the limited evidence and the excavator suggests that 'it is unlikely that the excavated features all relate to a single period or phase' (Chapple 2002, 238-9). Description
Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 00E0796), beside a stream towards the top of a gentle S-facing slope. Excavation initially revealed a concentration of burnt stones and charcoal (5.2m x 5.1m; max. D 0.5m). Removal of this material revealed a trough, two conjoined pits, a hearth and some 25 stakeholes. The trough was rectangular with six planks of alder at its base and on top of these was a large boulder which may have functioned as a 'pot-boiler'. The only finds recovered from the site were some flakes of flint débitage. (Ó Drisceoil 2002, 238) Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 25 July 2012 Not indicated
