Description
'During the course of test trenching on this site in Killierisk townland a total of 33 trenches were opened. Archaeological features and strata were only noted in two adjoining trenches at the south-western end of the field. Here a slot trench and a series of postholes representing a circular structure 2.6m in diameter. The slot trench was 0.30m in width and contained large amounts of charcoal. Post holes were noted as part of the main structure,. Both along the perimeter, internally and outside the line of the slot trench. A possible hearth was also noted internally. The only find from the site was a large piece of rock crystal found in the slot trench. The excavator interpreted the site as a possible Bronze Age house, comparing it to similar structures excavated at sites around Ireland, particularly Chancellorsland, Tipperary (Doody, 2000, 135-160). Charcoal from the site subsequently returned a calibrated (Sigma 2) date of 1760-1600 BC (3380 ±40 BP; 3710-3550 Cal. BP; Beta 199747).' - KE029-304 Enclosure
Description
'The site is situated in the townland of Manor West, on top of a substantial limestone reef (50 feet above O.S. Datum, 27mm North-East of S.M.R. Ke029 164 ). The reef has sheer sides, except to the south - south west, where it slopes more gradually down to the surrounding lowlands. The drop to the lowland is greatest on the north-west, where quarrying has partially cut into the reef. The reef affords commanding views of the Tralee area, in all directions and dominates this area of the Lee Valley. The site is not recorded on the sites and Monuments Record for County Kerry. The most southerly portion of the reef, where it slopes gradually down to the lowland, has been stripped of much of its surface material and the underlying limestone bedrock has been broken up. This has been done in connection with a substantial housing development, which bounds the site to the south and west........the major portion of the reef is separated from the development area by an east-west running boundary wall and is generally sub-circular in area, with an approximate diameter of 80m. This portion of the reef is almost completely overgrown with almost impenetrable whitethorn scrub......[the] surviving portion of the reef is partially enclosed by a intermittent, substantial stone and earth bank, which in places remains to a height of approx. 0.8m and is around 10m wide at base. On the north-west side of the reef it is obvious that the enclosing element was bi-vallate, as a second bank, much denuded , is visible outside the first, however there is no trace of a ditch associated with either bank.' Description
This has been done in connection with a substantial housing development, which bounds the site to the south and west. This work partially damaged the site and two small cairns were levelled. Inspection of the site following this damage led to the recovery of fragments of cremated bone and water rolled quartz "balls" similar to those recovered from the Passage Tomb at Ballycarty. The site was subsequently the subject of a Preservation Order (F94 6049-1). In other areas of this portion of the reef, large amounts of earth, rubble and spoil has been mounded. There appears to be one small cairn at the extreme east of this portion of the reef. The cairn measures circa. 6m X 7m and is substantially destroyed. Aerial photography indicates that there were at least two other circular features and a possible bank on this portion of the reef but these are now destroyed.........inside the enclosed area [KE029-304----] there are a number of sections of a third substantial bank. Its exact nature is unclear due to the overgrowth but it is constructed of stone and earth. The interior contains one substantial cairn on its western side. The cairn is under the dense overgrowth and ,as such, is clearly visible (no grass cover). It is approx.12m in diameter and remains to a height of around 1.6m. It is constructed of medium sized angular limestones and appears to be inside the smaller internal enclosure. Centrally placed within the site are two much smaller, very denuded cairns and a large example which measures approx. 8m X 10m and remains to a height of around 0.6m.' Compiled by Michael Connolly for the Archaeological Survey of Ireland as part of a survey of the Lee Valley area in 1996-97. Date of upload: 27 April 2012
