• GA084-085002 Children's burial ground
  Description

  Within an early ecclesiastical enclosure (GA084-085003-). A roughly rectangular area (NE-SW < 24.8m, NW-SE < 9.5m) defined by a degraded scarp along SE, SW and NW sides, and by a field wall along NE side. Within the interior are a number of set stones indicating graves oriented NE-SW. Much of N sector is covered with rubble and boulders which obscure the grave-markers. • GA084-085003 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  On a W-facing slope in grass and bogland. A large poorly preserved roughly oval enclosure (NE-SW 212.5m, N-S 180m) defined for the most part by a scarp with traces of an earthen bank from N to ESE. An external fosse is visible at N and survives intermittently from ESE to SW. No visible surface trace of the enclosing elements survives from W to N or at ENE where there is a large gap (Wth 27.6m). A number of field boundaries cut across the interior and a CBG (GA084-085002-) is associated. Adjoining the enclosure at SE is a roughly oval annexe (NE-SW c. 80m) enclosed by an earthen bank and external fosse. A watermill (GA084-085004-) lies immediately to SW. When coupled with the td. name, the association of the CBG and the large enclosure suggest that this is the site of an early ecclesiastical settlement. • GA084-085004 Water mill - horizontal-wheeled
  Description

  Immediately SW of an early ecclesiastical enclosure (GA084-085003-). The site of a watermill, possibly of the horizontal type (pers. comm. E. Rynne). The 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1933) shows two roughly parallel banks, c. 25m apart, branching off from the enclosure at SW. These are shown running downhill for c. 150m on a NNW-SSE axis, converging into one towards SSW end. On the same map, a stream is depicted emerging from the fosse of the enclosure at WSW. It is then shown running beneath a small bridge immediately outside it at SW before flowing off downhill between the two banks. These features probably represent the remains of the head race of a watermill (ibid.). Though still intact in July 1970 (CUCAP BDN 70), only faint surface traces now survive. • GA084-086 Settlement cluster
  Description

  In poorly drained grassland, bounded at E and W by two streams. Aerial reconnaissance in July 1970 (CUCAP BDN 73) revealed a well-preserved deserted village covering an area c. 300m NE-SW by 275m NW-SE. It consists of eight rectangular plots, situated on either side of a narrow grass-covered 'street'. This runs E-W through the 'village' and can be traced for a considerable distance to NW and SE. Each plot contains one or two houses, some with internal divisions. The 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map shows three roofed buildings in this area along with a section of the roadway. This and its regular layout, when coupled with the absence of a church, castle or other diagnostic features, suggest that it is of 17th/18th-C date. Furthermore, the area is also known locally as 'the sixteen tenants'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'.   Description
