- GA005-005 Souterrain
Description
On W-facing slope of a ridge in grassland. Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1930) as an isolated souterrain; it appears to have been known locally as 'Sálín Crú (Sawleen Crew)' (Topgr. Files, NMI). According to Neary (1914, 119, no. 21). 'The entrance chamber is lined with loose-stone masonry, and is roofed with heavy flags. It is at present 5 ft. [1.5m] wide, 9 ft. [2.75m] long, and 5 ft. high. It was very much deeper. The passage led E. at a depth … of five feet, but it has been clogged with sand by burrowing rabbits'. No visible surface traces survive. Two ringforts (GA005-075---- and GA005-006----) lie 275m to E and 375m to SE respectively. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA005-006 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a W-facing slope overlooking bogland to W. Oval rath (E-W 47m, N-S 30.5m), in fair condition, defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. Both faces of the inner bank, present from E through S to W, are revetted with stone; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. The fosse and outer bank are best preserved from E through S to W. A gap at E could be original. Within the interior is a grassed-over rectangular structure of stone (L 5 m, Wth 4m), possibly a house; surrounding it are a series of mounds and hollows, probably internal divisions. A souterrain (GA005-005----) lies 375m to NW. (Neary 1914, 119, no. 21) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. - GA005-007 Ringfort - rath
Description
On NW-facing slope of Checker Hill in grassland. Very poorly preserved subcircular rath (N-S 30m, E-W 27m) defined by an earthen bank from NE to SE; elsewhere a degraded scarp forms the enclosing element. The td. boundary cuts the monument at NW and NE. Neary (1914, 119, no. 19) noted a 'ravelled' outer bank reinforced with stone. No visible surface trace of it survives. A ringfort (GA005-008----) lies c. 270m to SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA005-008 Ringfort - rath
Description
Some 270m SE of a ringfort (GA005-007----). Marked on OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (D c. 35m). No visible surface trace survives. Neary (1914, 120, no. 18) classified it as an 'earthen fort' enclosed by a bank and external fosse. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
