Recorded monuments
- MA070-115 Ringfort - unclassified
Description
In level improved pasture. Recorded as an enclosure – probably a ringfort – with a later field boundary running across the interior from ENE to SW on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (1837) and shown on the slightly later OS 25-inch map (1893) defined by a scarp. A circular area (diam. 25m) is defined by an enclosing scarp (H 0.3m at E; H 0.8m at S; H 1.8m at SE) which is traceable from ENE-SE-S) and is faintly visible at N. A later field boundary overlies the perimeter at SW. The W-half of the interior is generally level while the E-half slopes slightly down towards the E. The field boundary recorded crossing the interior on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (1837) had been removed. Date of visit: 28-7-2025 Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy
- MA070-116 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture on the W-facing slope of a N-S ridge. Recorded on the first edition (1837) of the OS 6-inch map as a circular area defined by an enclosing bank from NW-N-E-SE but with a farm lane (Wth c. 4m) running on the line of the enclosing bank from SE-W-NW. A roughly circular area (int. diam. 28m) is enclosed by an overgrown inner bank of earth and stone (int. H 0.1-0.5m; Wth 7-8m; ext. H 1.3-2.4m) which has been reduced to a scarp (H 1.3-2.6m) along the E and W, and an outer fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.3m) which is only visible from S-WSW but whose line can be followed as a berm (Wth 2m; ext. H 0.3m) a short distance farther between WSW and WNW. The interior contains three large and almost contiguous subcircular hollows (max. diams. 7m; max D 1m) in the W sector, partially cutting into the line of the enclosing scarp, and there is a fourth, overgrown rectangular hollow (L 9m NE-SW; Wth 6m) in the N sector. A second rath (MA070-117----) lies c. 230m to the E and there is a third rath (MA070-118----) c. 350m to the SE. Date of visit: 9-5-2025 Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy
- MA070-117 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture on the upper E-facing slope of a broad ridge. A circular area (int. diam. 38m) is enclosed by an overgrown, broad, flat-topped stony bank (int. H 0.1m at E-0.9m at W; Wth 7m; ext. H 1.6m at S-3.2m at E). An overgrown gap (Wth 4m) at SSE may be an original entrance and there are later livestock gaps at N and WSW. A fosse (Wth at base 1.5–2.5m; D 0.3-0.8m) runs outside the bank. The interior is generally level and featureless with some briar and thorn growth in the S half. A second rath (MA070-116----) lies c. 230m to the W and there is a third rath (MA070-118----) c. 280m to the SSW. Date of visit: 17-4-2025 Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy
- MA070-118 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture at the top of a moderately steep S-facing slope. A roughly circular area (int. diam. 31m) is defined by an inner and an outer bank with an intervening fosse. The inner bank of earth and stone (int. H 0.1m-0.7m; Wth 7-8m; ext. H 1.8–2.8m) has been reduce to a scarp (H 2m) along the E and has an overgrown gap (Wth 3m) at W, a narrower livestock gap at NNE, and its outer face is denuded along the NNW. The fosse is flat-bottomed (Wth 2m at WNW - 6m at N) but poorly preserved along the S. The second, outer bank of earth and stone is best preserved from WNW-N–E (int. H over base of fosse 0.5-1m; Wth 4–6.5m; ext. H 1m), contains a livestock gap at NNE and has been reduced to a scarp (H 0.5m) along the SE and SW. The interior is heavily overgrown in the NE sector and contains a possible souterrain (MA070-118001-) in the NW sector where the ground is generally level. Elsewhere the internal ground slopes down slightly towards the SE. Date of visit: 09-05-2025 Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy
- MA070-118001 Souterrain
Description
In the NW sector of a ringfort (MA070-118----), close to the edge of the inner enclosing bank. A long, nettle-filled rectangular hollow (L 11m NE–SW; Wth 4.5m; D 1-1.2m) may be the remains of a robbed-out souterrain. Date of visit: 9-5-2025 Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy
