- CO115-114 Field boundary
Description
In rough grazing on blanket bog, on a gentle SE-facing slope, on the SE foothills of Slieve Miskish. A network of relict stone field boundaries extends over an area measuring c. 280m NW-SE by c. 120m NE-SW. The main stretch of relict wall (T c. 0.55m; max. H c. 0.8m) extends in a general NW-SE direction for a distance of c. 280. The wall is clearly visible in the cutaway bog, especially towards the NW end of the network, but disappears under deeper bog. In places only the tops of the stones, which protrude through the bog, are visible. Shorter stretches branch off the main wall and extend in either a general SW or NE direction. Most of the walls are curvilinear with few, if any, straight stretches noted. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Description
In rough grazing broken by rock outcrop, atop natural rise. Arc (C 14m) formed by dry stone walling (H 1.5m; Wth 1.2m). Adjoining external face of arc are two conjoined subrectangular enclosures (6.4m N-S x 7.5m E-W: 8.3m N-S x 10m E-W). Souterrain (CO115-01002-) in interior. Description
On hillside c. 10m S of cashel (CO115-01001-); investigated 1932 (NMI). Two earth-cut chambers at right angles to each other. Drain covered with flagstones extends from S end chamber 2; original entrance chamber 1. Chamber 1: L 2.52m; Wth 1.5m. Chamber 2: L 2.74m; Wth 1.3m (McCarthy 1977, 316-317). No visible surface trace.
