- CO107-038 Souterrain
Description
Discovered in 1967 and excavated by O'Kelly and Shee (1968, 40-3). Five chambers were described, all earth cut; the smallest is Chamber 3 (L 2.0m; Wth 1.50m) and the largest is Chamber 4 (L 6.50m; Wth 1.50m; H 0.75m). Chamber 3 contained 3 capstones with ogham inscriptions (CO107-058----, CO107-059----, CO107-060----); now in the National Museum. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). Description
An inscribed roof-slab of soft shale/clay slate (L 1.72m; 0.53m x 0.11m) found in a souterrain (CO107-038---) with two other ogham stones (CO107-060--- and CO107-059---). The inscription, which is in fine knife-cuts, reads: [A?]DARUN M[A]CI COLAL[I?] (O'Kelly and Shee 1968, 43; McManus 1997, 72-3, no. xi). Now in National Museum of Ireland (DU018-163----). Description
An inscribed lintel of sandstone (L 1.75m; 0.7m x 0.11m) found with two other ogham stones (CO107-060--- and CO107-058---) within a souterrain (CO107-038---). The inscription, which is in fine knife-cuts, reads: MOUNIN (O'Kelly and Shee 1968, 43; McManus 1997, 72-3, no. x). Now in National Museum of Ireland (DU018-164----). Description
Found with two other ogham stones (CO107-059--- and CO107-058---) within a souterrain (CO107-038---). It is a rectangular stone (L 0.97m; 0.45m x 0.08m) of soft shale/clay slate, which formed the entrance jamb. The upper portion was crushed and shattered from the overlying lintel. The inscription, which is in fine knife-cuts, reads: MOESAC (O'Kelly and Shee 1968, 43; McManus 1997, 72-3, ix). Now in National Museum of Ireland (DU018-165----).
