Description
Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 35m) on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, it is situated towards the bottom of a SW-facing slope of Ask Hill. It is visible as a cropmark enclosure (diam. c. 40m) defined by a single fosse feature on aerial photograph (CUCAP: AVJ 90) and as a curve in the surviving field bank and townland boundary with Ask W-N (C 34m). The fosse is also visible on aerial photographs (MM (53) 23, 24, 30), as is a rectangular annexe (dims c. 20m N-S; c. 20m E-W) defined by the cropmarks of fosse features attached to the perimeter of the rath at S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). Description
The site was excavated (E3494) during 2005 as Site 33 of the N11 Gorey to Arklow link. Situated in a low-lying area on the S bank of a small ESE-WNW stream, although an older course of the stream ran just S of it. A semi-circular mound of broken and burnt stone (dims 15m E-W; 11m N-S; T 0.25m) was used in conjunction with a steep-sided, pear-shaped trough (dims 2m x 1.8m; D 0.7m). There was a cluster of stake-holes just N of the trough, and two concentrations of charcoal on the S bank of the old stream are interpreted as hearths.
