• RO034-038 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a gentle S-facing slope of a large NW-SE ridge. D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 40.2m NW-SE; 34.5m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.4-4.7m; int. H 0.3-0.7m; ext. H 1.1-1.6m) and hedge E-S and W-N, and by a scarp (H 0.5m) S-W. The monument is truncated by the NW-SE N60 Castlerea to Roscommon road at NE. There is no identifiable original entrance but there are traces of an outer fosse (Wth of top 7m; Wth of base 3.3; D 0.4m) at NW. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

• RO034-055 House - 17th century
  Description

  On a gentle SW-facing slope. Marked on the 1837 and 1929 eds of the OS 6-inch map as ruined houses, including a probable T-shaped house that is positioned at the NW end of a NW-SE avenue (RO034-113----). The house is a rectangular grass-covered platform (dims 8m NW-SE; 7.5m NE-SW) defined by scarps (H 0.2m). Attached to the SE is a sunken grass-covered rectangular area (dims 7m NW-SE; 6.7m NE-SW) defined by grass-covered banks (Wth 1.5-3.2m; int. H 0.7-0.85m; ext. H 0.2-0.55m) at NE and SW and by a scarp down to the interior (H 0.45m) at SE. Immediately to the W is an area with out-houses represented by a jumble of earthen banks covering an area of c. 1 acre (c. 0.4 ha). It is possible that the house and much of the complex could date to the 17th or early 18th century. In 1641 Sir Ulick Burke owned 300 acres at Killinraght and the unknown Carrowbroghlohan but by 1669 this land had passed to a Chidley Coote as the largest portion of an estate that included 444 acres in four other parcels within Oran parish (Simington 1949, 52). The process is not documented, but the Coote family could have made Killinraghty the demesne land of their estate in Ballymoe half barony where they held about 300 acres outside Oran parish (ibid. 53-8).   Description

  On the gentle SSW-facing slope at the SW base of a NW-SE ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 53m E-W; 50.6m N-S) defined by a slight earthen bank (Wth c. 5m ; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 1.7m) NW-NE and a complete rounded, reed-covered fosse (Wth of top 6.2-7.45m; Wth of base 3.1-5.1m; int. D 0.75m at E to 1.4m at S; ext. D 0.5-0.75m). There is an entrance causeway (Wth 4.8m; H 0.45m) at SE (max. ext. dims 67.7m E-W; 63.8m N-S). See the attached aerial view taken from the ENE.   Description

  On a gentle SW-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 48m E-W; 46.4m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 3-4.5m; int. H 0.2-0.6m; ext. H 0.45-1.2m) NW-E-WSW and by a scarp (H 0.6m) elsewhere. There is a rounded fosse (at N: Wth of top 8m; Wth of base 2.8m; D 0.8m) NNW-E, the outer edge of which has been quarried away (D 0.6-1.2m) NNE-E. There is no identifiable original entrance.   Description

  On a gentle S-facing slope. Human remains in lintelled graves (RO034-059002-) were discovered during the 1950s at the site of a church, locally called Killfinnerty, which was then visible as a platform (dims c. 7m E-W; c. 3.5m N-S) (NMI file). This structure is no longer visible but the graveyard is a grass-covered rectangular area (dims c. 35m ENE-WSW; c. 18m NNW-SSE) defined by earth and stone banks (Wth 2m; H 0.3m) with a raised D-shaped area (dims 10m NW-SE; 4.5m NE-SW; H 0.2m) against the S side of a NW-SE field bank which overlies the interior.   Description
