- RO028-062001 Road - road/trackway
Description
On N-facing slope of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. A roadway (Wth c. 18m) defined by earthen banks (Wth 1-2m; H 0.5m) runs N from Carnfree cairn (RO028-069----) (L c. 600m). Its N end may have linked up with the road (RO028-065----) at the bottom of the slope approaching from the E, although there is a gap of c. 500m between them. This latter road may have continued W for c. 1 km to link up with the road (RO028-008----) which is now largely removed but was heading towards Rathcroghan and ran close to Ogulla Well (RO022-106003-). Barrows (RO028-062003-; RO028-062004-) are within the roadway just S of where it is cut by the modern NW-SE road. The road veered to the E of the ceremonial enclosure (RO028-069002-) around Carnfree cairn (RO028-069001-) but it does not survive in its vicinity, and recommences to its S as a single bank (L c. 350m) running southwards to the W of the deserted settlement (RO028-062005-). It then turns SE (L c. 300m) as a carriageway (Wth 14.6m) defined by earthen banks (Wth 3-4m; H 0.4-0.8m). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revised upload: 5 August 2015
- RO028-062003 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
On the N-facing slope of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. Described as a ring-barrow in 1958 (SMR file), it is not now visible between the two banks of road (RO028-06201-). Mound barrow (RO028-062004-) is 10m to the SE. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO028-062004 Barrow - mound barrow
Description
On the N-facing slope of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge abutting the E bank of road (RO028-062001-), which has been removed to its S (L c. 20m). Circular grass-covered mound (diam. 10m; H 0.5m at S to 1.3m at N). Ring-barrow (RO028-062003-) is 10m to the NW. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO028-062006 House - indeterminate date
Description
On the N-facing slope of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge and just W of the banks of road (RO028-062001-). This is a rectangular grass-covered area (ext. dims 11.8m NW-SE; 5.2m NE-SW) defined by slight traces of a wall footing and divided into two rooms. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO028-063001 Barrow - bowl-barrow
Description
On a slight rise of the broad WNW-ESE ridge of Carnfree. It has been identified as part of Dumha Selga, which has mythological associations (FitzPatrick 2004, 64-5). Flat-topped grass-covered mound (diam. of top 16m N-S; 15.2m E-W; diam. of base 30.5m E-W; 25.4m N-S; H 1.6-1.8m), with a slight bank on the summit (Wth c. 3m; H 0.2-0.9m) SW-N, perhaps spoil from a levelling of an originally rounded top or an ancient adaptation. The mound is surrounded by a fosse (Wth of top 13.2-15.1m; Wth of base 4-5m; D 0.5-0.8m) and outer flat-topped bank (Wth of base 9.2-10.7m; Wth of top 4.1-4.9m). This bank has an earthen field bank on its outer edge (Wth c. 2m; int. H 0.2-0.3m; ext. H 1.2-1.7m), perhaps spoil from the cutting of an external flat-bottomed fosse or drain (Wth of top 5-6.7m; Wth of base 1.5-2.5m; D 0.2-0.8m). There are no original entrances identified (max. ext. diam. 66m E-W), but the bank was removed NW-NE in the construction of rath (RO028-063002-) which is to the N (max. ext. diam. 65m E-W). Mound barrow (RO028-063004-) is c. 50m outside to the ESE and mound barrow (RO028-063005-) is c. 60m outside to the NE. Geophysical survey showed remarkably little variation with all techniques, suggesting that it is very uniform in composition. There is a hut-site (RO028-063003-), visible as a subcircular platform (dims 10m E-W; 6m N-S; H 0.1-0.4m) at the centre. The entrance (Wth 3m) and causeway (Wth 4m) are at ENE, and the interior is overlain by a WNW-ESE field wall and townland boundary with Carrowgarve to the N.
