  Description

  On a slight S-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 36.3m E-W; 34.7m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2-2.5m; int. H 0.1-0.3m; ext. H 0.7-0.9m) NE-S-SW which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.7m) elsewhere. There is no visible fosse, but a berm (Wth 5m) separates the bank from a relict field bank (Wth 2m; H 0.5-0.7m) WNW-NNE. There is no identifiable original entrance, but there is a grass-covered depression (dims 9m E-W; 2.5m N-S; D 0.5m), perhaps a souterrain (RO028-054002-), extending E through the interior from the perimeter at NW.   Description

  On a slight S-facing slope. A grass-covered depression (dims 9m E-W; 2.5m N-S; D 0.5m) extending E through the interior from the perimeter of rath (RO028-054001-) at NW may be a souterrain, which is described in italic lettering on the 1836 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a 'Subterranean Passage'. • RO028-055 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Towards the bottom of a gentle NW-facing slope. Subcircular grass and rush-covered area (dims 41m E-W; 35m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.5-2.7m; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 0.7-1.1m) SSE-W-NNW which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.2-0.8m) elsewhere. There is a fosse represented by a band of reeds (Wth of base 2.5m generally to 7m at E) which is truncated by a NW-SE field bank at SW. The entrance (Wth 2.2m) and causeway (Wth 2.4m) are at NNW. • RO028-056001 Field system
  Description

  On the broad WNW-ESE ridge of Carnfree centering on the area from rath (RO028-063----) at W to the church (RO028-075005-) at the E and extending S into Ballaghabawmore (c. 1km) and N into the low ground of Cargin Demesne and the higher ground of Lissacurkia, c. 1.5m to the N, regardless of the undulations of the terrain. An area of c. 4 km square has a relict field pattern consisting of parallel field banks (L c. 1.5km) placed c. 100-200m apart generally running E-W or NE-SW and with cross-walls creating fields of c. 4 ha. Generally the large rectangular fields would appear to be interupted by the smaller plots that are coeval with the settlements (RO028-072011-; RO028-074----), and the church at Carns (RO028-075005-). The roadway (RO028-062----) running N from Carnfree (RO028-069----) appears to overlie and post-date the larger fields. This area also contains the prehistoric ritual centre of Carnfree and its associated monuments.   Description

  On a gentle NE-facing slope of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 30.4m NE-SW; 29.2m NW-SE) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.7-4.3m; int. H 0.6m at NE to 1.1m at NW; ext. H 1.6-2m) and outer fosse (Wth of top 5.2-6.2m generally to 9.4m at SE; Wth of base 1.4-2m; D 0.4-0.6m generally to 1.3m SE-SW), which is absent W-NW (max. ext. diam. 46m NE-SW; 45.3m NW-SE).   Description

  On a gentle W-facing slope of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. Circular grass and rush-covered area (diam. 46m NW-SE; 44.4m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.7m) ENE-SSE and a scarp (H 0.4-0.5m) elsewhere. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. A D-shaped enclosure or annexe (RO028-058002-) (dims 77m NE-SW; c. 60m NW-SE) defined by a scarp (H 0.3-0.5m) is attached to the NW, but it is confined by or cut by field banks at NW and NE, and both the rath and annexe are overlain by a NW-SE field bank.   Description

  On a gentle W-facing slope of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. D-shaped enclosure or annexe (dims 77m NE-SW; c. 60m NW-SE) defined by a scarp (H 0.3-0.5m) is attached to the NW of rath (RO028-058001-) and almost containing the rath, but the enclosure is confined or cut by field banks, and both the rath and annexe are overlain by a NW-SE field bank.   Description

  Towards the top of the N-facing slope of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. Rectangular grass-covered area (dims 35m E-W; 28.3m N-S) defined by earthen banks (Wth 4-4.5m; int. H 0.6-0.9m; ext. H 0.8-0.9m generally to 1.6m at S), with a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of top 5.2m; Wth of base 1.5-2m; D 0.3m) only at S. The perimeter at S is built over a field bank of field sytem (RO028-056001-) and the perimeter is truncated by a N-S field bank at W, but an original entrance cannot be identified.   Description

  Marked only on the 1930 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a small feature (diam. c. 5m), and situated at a crest on the N-facing slope of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. Grass-covered cairn (dims 4.7m N-S; 2.8m E-W; H 0.2m at S to 0.5m at N) with a flat top (diam. 2.3m N-S; 2.1m E-W).   Description

  On the N side of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. Circular grass-covered mound (diam. 8.8m E-W; 8.5m N-S; H 0.2-0.4m) which is incorporated into a relict NE-SW field bank. Bowl-barrow (RO028-063001-) is c. 60m to the SW, mound barrow (RO028-063004-) is c. 70m to the S, and ring-barrow (RO028-064001-) is c. 210m to the E. Rath (RO028-063002-) is c. 50m to the SW.   Description

  On the broad WNW-ESE ridge of Carnfree. Circular grass-covered platform (diam. of top 7.6m E-W; 7m N-S; diam. of base 10.6m E-W; 10m N-S; H 0.2-0.3m) surrounded by a fosse (Wth of top 3.2m at N to 6m E-S; Wth of base 2-2.5m) and outer bank (Wth 4-5m; int. H 0.5-0.8m; ext. H 0.75-1m). A gap (Wth 1.7m) has been broken in the bank at E (ext. diam. 23.6m N-S; 23.4m E-W). Barrows (RO028-063004-; RO028-063005-) are c. 200m to the W.   Description

  On the broad WNW-ESE ridge of Carnfree. Rectangular grass-covered area (dims 31m N-S; 30m E-W) with N-S potato ridges defined by an earthen bank (Wth 1.5-2m; H 0.6-0.8m) and which is bisected by a N-S field bank. The perimeter at S is incorporated into a relict E-W field bank which also has a rectangular grass-covered enclosure (RO028-064003-) (dims 22m E-W; 14m N-S) defined by earthen banks (Wth 3m; H 0.3m) attached to its S side, SW of the larger enclosure. A house site (RO028-064004-) (ext. dims 14m E-W; 7m N-S) defined by stone wall footings and divided into two rooms is in the angle of the two enclosures. A house site (RO028-064004-) (ext. dims 14m E-W; 7m N-S) defined by stone wall footings and divided into two rooms is in the angle of the two enclosures. A N-S field bank (L 50m) connects its W bank with the W bank of enclosure (RO028-064002-), c. 50m to the N, while ring-barrow (RO028-064001-) is c. 50m to the E.   Description

  On a broad plateau with rock outcrop. D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 44m E-W; 29m N-S) defined by a grass-covered earth and stone bank (Wth 1.4-2.4m; H 0.1-0.4m) SE-W-NW. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance, and the monument is truncated by an E-W wall at N and a N-S wall at E. A relict field bank extends from the perimeter at SW as part of a field system (RO028-239002-) of rectangular fields (dims c. 100m x c. 50m) covering about 5 acres (c. 2 ha).   Description

  On the crest of a N-facing slope. A test excavation (04E0762) at the site of a new house produced evidence of an oval pit (dims 2.45m E-W; 0.9-1.4m plus N-S; D 0.5m), possibly from a pitfield, filled with a light topsoil containing some charcoal flecks.
