• RO028-062001 Road - road/trackway
  Description

  On N-facing slope of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. A roadway (Wth c. 18m) defined by earthen banks (Wth 1-2m; H 0.5m) runs N from Carnfree cairn (RO028-069----) (L c. 600m). Its N end may have linked up with the road (RO028-065----) at the bottom of the slope approaching from the E, although there is a gap of c. 500m between them. This latter road may have continued W for c. 1 km to link up with the road (RO028-008----) which is now largely removed but was heading towards Rathcroghan and ran close to Ogulla Well (RO022-106003-). Barrows (RO028-062003-; RO028-062004-) are within the roadway just S of where it is cut by the modern NW-SE road. The road veered to the E of the ceremonial enclosure (RO028-069002-) around Carnfree cairn (RO028-069001-) but it does not survive in its vicinity, and recommences to its S as a single bank (L c. 350m) running southwards to the W of the deserted settlement (RO028-062005-). It then turns SE (L c. 300m) as a carriageway (Wth 14.6m) defined by earthen banks (Wth 3-4m; H 0.4-0.8m). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revised upload: 5 August 2015

  Description

  At the crest of the N-facing slope of a WNW-ESE ridge, c. 250m N of the broad WNW-ESE ridge of Carnfree. A limestone slab (L 3.7m; Wth 0.35-1m; T c. 0.25-0.45m) is lying prone and broken in two, 40m E of the ring-barrow (RO028-068001-) and standing stone (RO028-068002-). • RO028-068001 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  At the crest of the N-facing slope of an WNW-ESE ridge, c. 250m N of the broad WNW-ESE ridge of Carnfree. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 35.5m N-S; 34.5m E-W) defined by a slight earthen bank (Wth 4-5.5m; H 0.1-0.2m), with slight traces of an internal fosse (Wth c. 7m) at S. There is no identifiable original entrance (ext. diam. c. 38m E-W). Standing stone (RO028-068003-) is at the centre, and standing stone (RO028-067----) is 40m outside the perimeter to the E. Rath (RO028-245----) is c. 140m to the W. The bank was clearly visible when Beranger drew it and its standing stone in 1779 (Wilde 1870-1, 250-1) and when Knox saw it (1914b, 351).   Description

  At the crest of a N-facing slope of a WNW-ESE ridge, c. 250m N of the broad WNW-ESE ridge of Carnfree, and a little S of the centre of ring-barrow (RO028-068001-). This stone is known as Cloghfadnacarn - the long stone of the cairn. Limestone upright with a rectangular cross-section (dims 0.5m x 0.4m) which expands over the grass-line and is aligned E-W. • RO028-069001 Cairn - unclassified
  Description

  On a rock-outcrop rise towards the E end and at the highest point of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. Traditionally this is the burial place of Fraech, son of Conall Cruachna, who was a contemporary of Queen Meave (Wilde 1870-1, 249-50; Gormley 1989, 23). Circular grass-covered cairn (diam. of base 10.2m N-S; 11m E-W; H 1.7m E-S to 2.2m generally) which has a slightly dished top (diam. 6-7.5m) sloping down to the E, and has some facing stones (H 0.7-1m) and spill N-E-SW (original diam. c. 7m). The cairn was the inauguration site (RO028-069003-) of the O'Conors from the late 12th century, and probably earlier, into the 15th century (Gormley 1989, 26-8; FitzPatrick 2004, 60-8). The rite is known in detail (0'Daly 1853; O'Donovan 1891, 83-4) and required the participation of the abbots of twelve churches and the leaders of the principal Connachta tribes. The inauguration stone (RO020-057----), which is of uncertain authenticity (FitzPatrick 2004, 113-5), was removed c. 1840 (Jones 1922-3) and is now at Clonalis House (RO020-057----), near Castlerea. The cairn is within the ceremonial enclosure (RO028-069002-) and a mound barrow (RO028-251----) is c. 90m to the SE. (Herity 1983, 126-7; Waddell 1988, 15) Limited geophysical survey identified horizontal surfaces inclined to the E within the cairn, and its dished surface is thought to indicate a ceremonial or inaugural function, which may have been a medieval adaptation.   Description

  On a rock-outcrop rise at the E end and the highest point of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. Subcircular grass-covered area with rock outcrop (dims. 85m E-W; 75.5m N-S) defined by low scarps (H 0.3m), with traces of a fosse (Wth of top 4m; D 0.2m) at N. Cairn (RO028-069001-) is at the centre. The road (RO028-062----) veers to the E to avoid the enclosure, which is partly quarried, especiall at E and ovrlain by N-S and E-W field walls. Limited geophysical survey failed to cofirm its existence (Waddell et al. 2009, 119). Mound (RO028-251----) is just outside it at SE. • RO028-069004 Inauguration stone
  Description

  When a portion was broken off the inauguration stone of the O'Conor kings at Carnfree (RO028-69001-) it was moved to the avenue of Cargin House near Tulsk c. 1840 by Daniel Kelly to prevent further damage by quarrying at the original site (Jones 1922-3). It has since been moved to the grounds of Clonalis House in the 1970s, although its authenticity is doubtful (FitzPatrick 2004, 113-5). It is a roughly rectangular limestone block (dims of base 0.8m x 0.4m; H 0.45-0.55m) with a subrectangular upper surface (dims 0.9m x 0.35-0.6m) which has an oval hollow (dims 0.3 x 0.1m; D 0.7m) divided in two by a ridge at the base to represent a footprint. • RO028-070 Barrow - bowl-barrow
  Description

  On a slight rise of the broad WNW-ESE ridge of Carnfree. It has been re-identified as Carn Lamha (FitzPatrick 2004, 65). Circular, conical and grass-covered mound (diam. of base 16m.3m N-S; H 3.5m) surrounded by a slight berm (Wth 1-1.2m) and fosse (Wth of top 5.5-9m; D 0.3m) (max. ext. diam. 35m N-S). There are also slight traces of an outer bank S-W, but this may be a field bank. The barrow is contained within a triangular area defined by field banks of the field system (RO028-056----). Ditch-barrows (RO028-071----; RO028-072001-; RO028-073----) are c. 60m to the W, c. 60m to the SSW and c. 90m SE respectively. (Herity 1983, 126-7; Waddell 1988, 15-6) Geophysical survey recorded high anomalous values on the mound that might be associated with burning episodes at its summit. However, anomalies towards the base could indicate the presence of terracing, or a revetment or cladding hidden within it. Circular flat-topped mound (diam. of top 4m; diam. of base 8m; H 0.1-0.3m) defined by a fosse (Wth of top 4m; ext. D 0.1-0.3m; max. ext. diam. 13m). Ditch barrow (RO028-072001-) is c. 80m to the WNW. • RO028-074 Settlement cluster
  Description

  In an E-W fold at the E end of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge, c. 300m E of Carn Lamha (RO028-070----). Known locally as the Sean Bhaile, it is thought to have had a fair but had been abandoned before 1800 AD (Gormley 1989, 24). An area of about 27 acres (c. 11 ha), with a core of about 11 acres (c. 4.5 ha) contains small rectangular fields (dims c. 15m x. c. 30m) at the core defined by earthen banks (Wth 2-3m; H 0.5m), and five house sites (ext. dims c. 8m x c. 4m) of one room and three of two rooms (ext. dims c. 17m x c. 7.6m) defined by wall footings. Outside the core area larger fields (dims c. 50m x c. 100m) include some with evidence of lazy-bed cultivation. Excavation (07E0688) on a two-roomed house (RO028-074007-) demonstrated that the earthen walls were constructed around wooden posts. It had two hearths, and the finds recovered included fragments of a chamber pot, a glass necklace and a clay pipe-stem, suggesting that it was abandoned during the eighteenth century. An adjacent field bank was originally drystone-built, but a nearby pit is undated although prehistoric lithics were recovered nearby.   On a slight S-facing slope within settlement cluster (RO028-074----). Rectangular two-room house visible as a rectangular grass-covered area (ext. dims 17m E-W; 7.6m N-S).   Description

  On level ground within settlement cluster (RO028-074----). Rectangular grass-covered structure (ext. dims 13.8m NE-SW; 5.1-6.1m NE-SW) of two rooms (NW: 4.4m NW-SE; 1.9m NE-SW; SE: 4.6m NW-SE; 2.9m NE-SW) with entrances in the long walls of the SE room. Excavation (07E0688) of this house demonstrated that the earthen walls were constructed around wooden posts. It had two hearths, and the finds recovered included fragments of a chamber pot, a glass necklace and a clay pipe-stem, suggesting that it was abandoned during the eighteenth century. An adjacent field bank was originally drystone-built, but a nearby pit is undated although prehistoric lithics were recovered nearby. • RO028-075004 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  On a SE-facing slope at the E end of the Carnfree ridge, and surrounding the church (RO028-075005-) and all other features. Oval enclosure (dims 130m E-W; 88m N-S) defined by an earth and stone bank best preserved at N (Wth 3m; max. int. H 0.8m; max. ext. H 1m) but frequently reduced to a scarp (H 0.2-0.5m) and largely removed N-E. It has an out-turned entrance (Wth 4m) at E with a rectangular platform (RO028-075007-) inside the entrance on the N side. It encloses the bivallate enclosure (RO028-075009-) recorded in remote sensing (06R0081). Excavation (06E0655) of a section of the perimeter at S reveals it is a drystone-built wall (Wth 2m). A charcoal filled trench outside it at S is interpreted as a corn-drying kiln (RO028-075013-) (Shanahan 2006, 7; 2009a, 455). See the attached aerial images taken from the SE (001) and NW (014). • RO028-075005 Church
  Description

  On a SE-facing slope at the E end of the Carnfree ridge. Probably of early, or even Patrician origin, and identified as Domhnach Mor na Maighe Selga (FitzPatrick 2004, 66). It is not listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of Pope Nicholas in the early fourteenth century, which suggests that it may have been defunct then. However, this church property had probably become a cell of the Dominicans at Tulsk (RO022-114006-) after its foundation in 1448 since a quarter at Carns is listed as part of its possessions in 1591. The excavated church may date from this period and be the work of the Dominicans (Shanahan and McNeary 2009, 134) Remote sensing has recovered evidence of an early bivallate enclosure (RO028-075009-) (ext. diam. c. 100m; int. diam. c. 75m) pre-dating the visible ecclesiastical enclosure (RO028-075004-) and within it. Inside the bivallate enclosure remote sensing recorded another enclosure (RO028-075010-) (diam. c. 50m), which itself is attached in a figure-of-eight to a smaller enclosure (diam. c. 25m) straddling its perimeter at NE. A section of the outermost ditch (Wth 3.3m; D 1.6m) of the bivallate enclosure was excavated at S. The church was a rectangular grass-covered mound which on excavation (int. dims. c. 13-14.5 E-W; 6.05m N-S) produced punch-dressed quoins dating from the 15th century or later, but the earliest church awaits discovery (Shanahan 2006, 6-9; 2009a, 455; Shanahan and McNeary 2009). A later structure (RO028-075001-) (ext. dims 13.8m WNW-ESE; 7m NNE-SSW) immediately to the W of the church was defined by stone walls (Wth c. 1m; H 0.5m) with entrances at the centre of the N (Wth 1.2m) and S (Wth 1.7m) walls. On excavation (06E0655) this was shown to be of two construction phases and is identified as a possible priest's house. This structure is within a rectangular enclosure (RO028-075002-) (int. dims 42.3m E-W; 29.5m N-S) defined by earthen banks (Wth 2m; H 0.3-0.5m) which may have been a graveyard, and burials (RO028-075011-), both pre- and post-dating the church, were found inside and outside both structures. A number of neo-natal remains found in the area supports a local tradition that the structures continued in use as a childrens burial ground (RO028-075012-) after the church buildings were abandoned in the late sixteenth or seventeenth century. An ogham stone (RO028-075008-), which has been read by F. Moore as MAQI ORA[C)(E) S (A) .... W[A]NI (or E, B or S) was found in the demolition level of the structures and dates from the fifth or early sixth century (Shanahan 2007, 23-4). The stone is presently in the care of the landowner. Excavation (06E0655) during 2007 of a mound c. 60m WNW of the church showed that it is a large structure (RO028-075014-) (dims c. 10m N-S; 8m plus E-W) defined by drystone walls that may have supported sill-beams, with an entrance at S. The interior was divided into a number of compartments, and the small finds would suggest that it may have been in use in the 10th to 12th century (Shanahan 2009a). A second visible rectangular enclosure (RO028-075006-) (int. dims 33m N-S; c. 30m E-W) is attached to the N of the enclosure containing the priest's house, and it is bounded at N by the bank of the oval ecclesiastical enclosure (RO028-075004-) (dims 130m E-W; 88m N-S) that encloses the other features and is defined by an earth and stone bank best preserved at N (Wth 3m; max. int. H 0.8m; max. ext. H 1m) but frequently reduced to a scarp (H 0.2-0.5m) and largely removed N-E. Excavation (06E0655) of the perimeter at S revealed it is a drystone-built wall (Wth 2m). Outside the perimeter a charcoal-filled trench is interpreted as part of a corn-drying kiln (RO028-075013-) (Shanahan 2009a, 455). The ecclesiastical enclosure has an out-turned entrance (Wth 4m) at E with a rectangular platform (RO028-075007-) (dims 13m N-S; 18m E-W) inside the entrance to the N. A standing stone (RO028-075003-) (dims 0.4m x 0.4m at base; H 1.05m) aligned NW-SE is outside the SE angle of the church. Some field banks of the extensive field system (RO028-056001-) abut the perimeter of the ecclesiastical enclosure, and post-date it.   Description

  On top of a slight WNW-ESE ridge, c. 600m N of the WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 56.7m NNE-SSW; 41.7m WNW-ESE) defined by earthen banks (Wth 4-6.5m; int. H 0.2m generally to 0.5m at E; ext. H 0.4-0.6m) with a curved side at N, and the straight S side interrupting a relict field E-W field bank of field system (RO028-056001-). • RO028-130001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  At the bottom of a SE-facing slope and at the N edge of a W-E valley (Wth c. 100m; D c. 10m). The E corner of moated site (RO028-130002-) curves outwards (diam. 23.3m N-S) NNW-E-SW as if it incorporated a rath. It is defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.6-4.3m; int. H 0.2-0.3m; ext. H 1.2-1.5m) and outer fosse (Wth of top 5.2-6m; Wth of base 2.5-2.8m; D 0.5-0.7m) NNW-E-SW, but there is no evidence of either a bank or fosse elsewhere.   At the bottom of a SE-facing slope and at the N edge of a W-E valley (Wth c. 100m; D c. 10m). Rectangular grass-covered area (dims 60.5m NW-SE; 36.9m NE-SW) defined by earthen banks (Wth 2.6-4.5m; int. H 0.1-0.5m; ext. H 0.7-1.6m) and outer fosses or moats (Wth of top 5.3-5.8m; Wth of base 1.8-2.5m; D 0.1-0.8m). The banks are removed on the NE and SE sides and the E corner curves outwards (diam. 23.3m N-S) NNW-E-SW as if it incorporated a rath (RO028-130001-). See the attached aerial view taken from the ESE.   Description

  On the S-facing slope of a sight WNW-ESE ridge c. 600m N of the WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. Circular grass-covered area (int. diam. 30m E-W; 28m N-S) defined by a parch mark (Wth 2-4m), with the parch-marks of field banks extending off to the SW and NW.   Just off the crest of the N-facing slope of a slight WNW-ESE ridge c. 250m N of the broad WNW-ESE Carnfree ridge. D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 22.7m ENE-WSW; 14.6m NNW-SSE) defined by a fosse (Wth of base 1.4-1.7m; int. D 0.2-0.3m; ext. D 0.1-0.2m) WSW-N-ENE, with slight traces of an internal bank (Wth 2.6m; int. H 0.1m) WSW-W. It is truncated at S by an ENE-WSW road. Barrow (RO028-068001-) is c. 140m to the W.
