- RO021-061 Ringfort - rath
Description
At the W end of a WNW-ESE ridge. Subcircular grass-covered platform (dims 35m NNE-SSW; 31.2m WNW-ESE) with a slight bank on the perimeter (Wth c. 2m; int. H 0.3m) WNW-ENE, defined by a complete flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of top 7.4-9m; Wth of base 2.5-3.5m; int. D 2-2.7m; ext. D 1.7-2m). There is an entrance ramp (Wth 3.5m) and causeway (Wth 7.5m) at SSE which might not be original as the fosse SSE-SW has been quarried, and a large pond has cut back the platform SW-NW. A WNW-ESE field bank overlies the platform S of the centre (max. ext. dim. 51.4m NNE-SSW). See the attached aerial image taken from the NE. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

Description
On a gentle S-facing slope. An area of c. 2 acres (c. 1 ha) of pasture contains relict field banks with drains on either side creating six rectangular plots (dims c. 15m x c. 20m) on either side of a central N-S bank. Description
Visible on aerial photograph (GSIAP: M 83-4), and situated on a broad plateau in a low-lying landscape. D-shaped grass and rush-covered area (dims 30.3m WNW-ESE; 25.2m NNE-SSW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.5m) E-S and a scarp (H 0.3m) S-NW, with a fosse visible as a band of rushes (Wth 3-5m) E-S-NW. The entrance (Wth 3.5m) and causeway (Wth 3m) are at ESE, but the monument is truncated by a WNW-ESE field bank at N (L 22m) and is not visible N of this feature. Description
On a WNW-ESE ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 40m N-S; 38m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 8.2m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.6m) ENE-SE reduced to a scarp (H 1.2-1.6m) elsewhere with a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of top 6m generally to 8.7m at N; Wth of base 3m generally to 6.7m at N; D 0.6-1.1m). There is no identifiable original entrance, and a NNE-SSW field bank overlies the monument towards the perimeter at E, the bank not being preserved E of this feature. Description
On the crest of a broad NW-SE ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 39m E-W; 35.7m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.5-3.4m generally to 8m at E; int. H 0.2-0.3m; ext. H 0.5-0.7m) WNW-N-ESE reduced to a scarp (H 0.6m) elsewhere, and a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of top 10-13m; Wth of base 3.5m at E to 10m at W; D 0.1-0.3m) SW-N-ESE with traces of an outer bank (Wth 5m; ext. H 0.1m) NW-NE. There is no identifiable original entrance, but a fragment of a relict NNW-SSE roadway (Wth 4.5m) overlies the interior towards the perimeter at E (max. ext. diam. 62m E-W).
