- RO021-056001 Ringfort - rath
Description
On the outer edge of a shelf on a gentle N-facing slope. Subcircular grass-covered area with potato ridges (dims 27.1m NNE-SSW; 23.3m WNW-ESE) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.2-3m; int. H 0.2-0.3m; ext. H 0.8-1.6m), with a slight external berm (Wth 0.8m) at the base of the bank NNW-SE. There is a complete outer flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of base 2.2-3.7m; D 0.1-0.3m), which may have been re-cut (Wth of base 1.7m) NNW-E, creating an outer bank (Wth c. 5m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 0.1m) NNW-E. The original entrance cannot be identified, but there is a rectangular house-site (RO021-056002-) (int. dims 7.5m E-W; 3m N-S) abutting the inside of the bank at S defined by earthen banks (Wth 1.5-3m; H 0.1-0.3m) with an entrance (Wth 2.3m) at N. Description
Visible on aerial photographs (ACAP: V206/10-11), and situated in a slight fold on an undulating landscape. Triangular area (dims c. 50m N-S; c. 30m E-W at S) SE of enclosure (RO021-073001-) divided into smaller plots by stone spreads (Wth c. 1m; H c. 0.2m). It encloses c. 1.5 acres (c. 0.5 ha). Description
On a rise in an undulating landscape. Circular grass-covered platform (diam. 35.5m N-S; 34.6m E-W) defined by a slight earthen bank (Wth 5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.8m) N-NNE and by a scarp (H 1.6m to 2.2m at W) elsewhere, with traces of a fosse (Wth of base 2-4m; D 0.2m) N-NNE and W-NW. The ramp entrance (Wth 4m) is at SW. Description
On a slight rise in an undulating landscape. Oval grass-covered area (dims 65.6m NNE-SSW; 51.7m WNW-ESE) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.5-3.5m; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 0.6-1.1m generally to 1.5m at S). The flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of base 6.2m; D 0.1m) survives S-WSW, but the original entrance cannot be recognised. It is bisected by a WNW-ESE relict field bank.
