• RO036-013001 Barrow - bowl-barrow
  Description

  Called a castle and the chapel of Mullaghnashee by O'Donovan in 1837 (O'Flanagan 1931, vol. 1, 50), the name has become attached and it is known locally as 'the Steeple', although there is no evidence of either structure. Known as Sídh Neannta it was one of the landmarks on the bounds of Uí Maine (O'Donovan 1843, 5). It is associated with the O'Hanley family, and it may have been an inauguration site for them. Situated at the summit of Fairymount Hill. D-shaped, grass-covered earthen mound with a gently domed summit (dims of top 13m E-W; 9m N-S; dims of base 28.2m E-W; 21.6m N-S; H 2.6-3m). A N-S field bank and drain clip the E edge of the mound and an E-W field bank with a drain on its N side truncates the mound towards the perimeter at S. Given its prominent location and its size, it might contain a passage tomb. Some cut stone, including two fragments of an inscription (RO036-013003-), probably from a graveslab or a cross, mention Eilis and Peter Hanley. Barrow (RO036-014----) is c. 110m to the SE..   Description

  On top of the barrow (RO036-013001-) at the summit of Fairymount Hill. Some cut stone, including two fragments of an inscription in false relief, probably from a graveslab or a cross of 16th or 17th century date, mention Eilis and Peter Hanley. • RO036-025001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a gentle SE-facing slope at the S foothills of Fairymount Hill. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 46m E-W; 44m N-S) defined by the remains of a fosse (Wth of top 5-7m; Wth of base 1.5-2.5m; int. D 0.1-0.5m; ext. H 0.1-0.2m). A field drain and outer bank curve around the platform at E, re-cutting the fosse NE-SE. There are four mature deciduous trees on the perimeter SE-S. A small oval enclosure (RO036-025002-) (dims c. 20m N-S; c. 15m E-W), marked on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as attached to the SSE, cannot be seen now.   Description

  Located towards the bottom of the SW-facing slope of a hill on what was once demesne land of Fairymount Castle, which was c. 250m to the NNE. A grass-covered oval enclosure (dims c. 60m NW-SE; c. 45m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank separated by a fosse from an outer bank SE-W is visible on Google Earth (01/03/2010). It is traversed by an E-W field bank with trees N of the centre, and was first reported by Jean Charles Caillère.
